Villain Overview

In this pathetically weak world, only the strongest rise to heights of great power. I control this city, and soon, I will be master of this world. Nothing can stand in my way! No police! No government! And certainly not these... mutant freaks! (Leonardo: Let's try that again, metalhead!) I will crush them all! I am... the Shredder!
~ The Shredder's bio.
None of you will leave here alive!
~ Utrom Shredder's most famous quote.
You speak my name, but you do not know me! I am Ch'rell, Oroku Saki, Duke Acureds, the one, true Shredder! I am a destroyer of worlds, and I fear no-one!
~ Utrom Shredder to the Mirage Turtles.

Ch'rell, also known as the Utrom Shredder, is the main antagonist of the 2003 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon series.

He is an evil Utrom who has committed countless atrocities and caused widespread devastation throughout the universe to make himself powerful, making him the most dangerous criminal in the universe. He is also the ruthless Leader of the Foot Clan, the adopted father of Karai and the archenemy of Mortu, the Utroms, the Ninja Turtles, and their master Splinter.

He was voiced by Scottie Ray, who also voiced his future counterpart, Tengu Shredder and the Cyber Shredder from the same show, Daz Bonez in One Piece, Anubis in Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Pyramid of Light, Zure and Zane Truesdale in Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, and Red Genesect in Genesect and the Legend Awakened.

Appearance[]

As Oroku Saki, the Utrom Shredder appears as a Japanese man with black hair and wears a white traditional Japanese robe, with the Foot symbol on its chest. As the Shredder, he wears a grey samurai armor full of spikes that covers his entire body, with two claws on his left gauntlet. It's later revealed that the human body is just an exo-suit to hide his true body, a red Utrom with a purple scar in his left eye that crosses it diagonally. The exo-suit that he wore also gave him many advantages, such as wielding a weapon that can only be wielded with protective gloves (like the Sword of Tengu), and faking his death multiple times (up until the revelation of his Utrom nature, Ch'rell was believed to be a human by his adversaries).

Aside from his usual Shredder exo-suit, Ch'rell has used a few other versions that are more powerful, such as the one he made based on Krang’s suit. This version can grow to giant size and has a number of weapons built into the hands. With this suit, he proved powerful enough to easily overwhelm the 2003, 1987, and Mirage Turtles, 2003 Splinter, Karai, his 1987 counterpart, and Krang in his own suit all at once.

Personality[]

But now you need to know who Saki, The Shredder, really is. He serves no great purpose, he fights no great evil. He is great evil. Any endeavor he undertakes, he does for his own selfish gain.
~ Splinter describing Utrom Shredder to his sons.

Ch'rell is an embodiment of the extreme megalomaniac: overconfident, ruthless, egotistical, relentless, and sadistic. He often seems to portray an emotionless lack of remorse for his actions, sometimes being proud of them to the point of extreme joy at the misery he causes others. All that he wants is to create chaos and destruction, solely to project his perceived power towards everyone around him. He hates anything and anyone who challenges, impedes, or otherwise wrongs him, holding strong grudges very long after the fact - in some cases, this can even become a pathological hatred against them. After Ch'rell had assumed the identity of the Shredder, his megalomania became even much stronger, to the point of calling himself the "one true Shredder".

In addition to his lack of remorse, Ch'rell will resort to anything, no matter how low he has to stoop, to come out on top. This includes striking down those who are weaker than him or totally defenseless against him. This was most evident during the Foot Clan's brawl with the turtles at April's shop. Upon seeing a wounded and incapacitated Leonardo, Ch'rell wasted no time attempting to impale him with his claws. When Splinter steps in to the nick of time to save Leo, the sensei accused Ch'rell of having no honor. Ch'rell then gleefully admits that he fights solely to win, underscoring that he would stop at nothing to get the victory he craves.

In the Ninja Tribunal storyline, it is revealed that anyone who claims the identity of the Shredder for themselves develops an unconscious mystical connection with the original Shredder. This connection made Ch'rell even more evil and dangerous than he already was. Consequently, Ch'rell's growing madness and hunger for power may be attributed at least in part to the influence of the Tengu Shredder; a theory given more weight by the fact that his human disguise was identical to the Tengu Shredder's human appearance. The same influence may be one of reasons why his 1987 counterpart found him instead of either Karai or Tengu Shredder and how his voice became deeper some time after his identity exposed to Splinter and the turtles to the point of no longer need to deepen his voice through his later exosuit.

Despite being evil to the core, Shredder did seem to show some affection towards Karai, even taking her in and training her. However, as her loyalty declines, he showed his true colors by disregarding his love for her (as well as her love for him assuming either were ever genuine); outright assaulting and even trying to kill her once she finally turned against him. Even Hun, his most loyal henchmen, proved nothing more than disposable. Having threatened to kill Hun several times, Shredder proves he cares just as little for him as Stockman. With Foot Mystics on the other hand, Shredder treated them with respect albeit for pragmatic reasons, which didn't help by them resenting him for being Tengu Shredder's impersonator/successor.

Shredder, in his final appearance, Turtles Forever, is where he is at his worst. Not only did he stop showing care for Karai, aside from a brief moment of hesitation, but ultimately refused to listen her warnings he would get himself killed because he was so fed-up with the turtles that he tried to destroy the entire multiverse even if that meant his own death, as long he could have the satisfaction of finally getting rid of his mortal enemies for the sake of his own petty revenge.

Overall, this Shredder is one of the most, if not the most evil and vile to date. He disregarded his few redeeming traits all for the sake of his revenge, and is even willing to kill countless of people, including himself, in order to get it. As Splinter said before, Shredder doesn't fight great evil, he is great evil.

Powers and Abilities[]

Given his diminutive stature and peculiar body shape, Ch'rell isn't the most fearsome adversary on his own. Though he has easily defeated his 1987 counterpart and Krang, displaying incredible cunning, speed, and power.

Ch'rell has shown considerable martial arts prowess when wearing his exo-suit as the Shredder, outdueling all of the Turtles and using his armored hand's claws as his main weapon. In close combat, he is more than capable of defeating practically any adversary. Due to his access to a variety of cutting-edge technologies, Shredder is also well-versed in Utrom science and technology.

Shredder has utilized stronger variations of his exo-suit in addition to his standard one, including the one he created after studying Krang's armor. This variation includes several built-in weaponry in the hands and may grow to enormous sizes.

Although mostly relying on science, Ch'rell was no stranger to magic. Though not shown, he learned necessary spells and enchantments to complete Sword of Tengu which presumably placed onto its handle. He also had mastered the power of Heart of Tengu which to allowed him to subjugate Foot Mystics, Tengu Shredder's elemental minions. During the time-travel mishap from the turtles' fight against Sh'Okanabo which brought him to the latter's ship, Ch'rell erroneously suspected magic to be involved.

Trivia[]

  • The Utrom Shredder is essentially a combination of the 1987 Shredder and Krang, being both the show's version of the Shredder and a brain-like alien warlord who operates on a robot body. Although Lloyd Goldfine and Peter Laird said that they tried to keep the similarity to a minimum, Turtles Forever goes a step further and has the Utrom Shredder merge Dimension X technology with the Utrom technology, giving him a powerful exoskeleton that can grow into a gigantic size. The Utrom Shredder even alludes to this fact by saying that the two technologies work well together.
  • The Utrom Shredder has many similarities with traditional depictions of the Devil. He was once a member of a benevolent race, only to betray said race and become their greatest enemy. His arrival on Earth was via the falling spaceship, similar to how the Devil fell from Heaven. He manipulates and tricks others into doing his bidding, walks through fire when fighting his enemies, and his throne room is always in ominous darkness that resembles Hell. The Foot Clan revere him as a kind of evil deity, and their symbol also bears a resemblance to a flame. His true form also resembles traditional depictions of Satan, being red with horns which makes him stand out from the other Utroms. His fate in the Season 3 finale draws the similarities further, in which he is banished to Mor Gal Tal, an icy asteroid that may be reminiscent of the ninth circle of Hell as depicted in The Divine Comedy, a massive, cold lake of icy water on which Satan himself is imprisoned.
  • Early on during the development of Back to the Sewers, when it was initially planned as a second Fast Forward season, it was discussed to bring back the Utrom Shredder as the TriShreddatron, revealing that the Utrom Shredder survived into the year 2105 by taking over a Triceraton soldier's body. However, a second Fast Forward season ultimately didn't materialize, likely because of season 6's reception was mostly mixed-to-negative. Though the Utrom Shredder was finally brought back in Turtles Forever.
  • This version of the Shredder easily has the highest kill count than any incarnation thus far, as he caused 4.2 million deaths by causing wars on different planets.
  • This is the first version of the Shredder that is not human.
  • He has the highest body count out of all incarnations of the Shredder, as he is directly responsible for at least billions of lives being lost (though most of his victims died before he assumed Shredder's identity).
  • In the video game Mutant Nightmare, the Utrom Shredder fires electric bolts but in the series he never does this.
  • During Secret Origins: Part 3, Utrom Shredder's voice was in higher pitch than in his exosuit. In his subsequent appearances in Season 3 however, his voice became deeper as much as in it.
