What the deuce?
~ Stewie Griffin's famous catchphrase.
VICTORY IS MINE!
~ Stewie Griffin
I have 137 nuclear warheads trained on every capital city on the globe. The world is now under my control. But oh no, I'm naked!
~ Stewie Griffin

Stewart Gilligan "Stewie" Griffin (born June 18, 1997) is one of the deuteragonists of the animated sitcom Family Guy.

He is the infant son of Lois and Peter Griffin, the younger brother of Meg and Chris Griffin, the best friend of Brian Griffin, and the older half-brother and arch-nemesis of Bertram.

He is voiced by series creator Seth MacFarlane, who also voices Peter Griffin, Brian Griffin, Carter Pewterschmidt, and Glenn Quagmire in the same show, and Roger Smith in American Dad!.

Goals and Ambitions[]

Stewie Kills Lois and Lois Kills Stewie

Stewie Kills Lois and Lois Kills Stewie DVD Cover.

Stewie originally had two goals in life: to murder his mother Lois, and to take over the world. However as the show progressed, Stewie gave up on these plans, and became more of an anti-hero, prone to mocking others for his own amusement but he wasn’t as bad as the earlier seasons, especially the first three seasons. If anything, he became a mere jerk rather who sometimes reverts back to his old self.

In other episodes, Stewie engages in other violent or criminal acts, including robbery, carjacking, loan sharking, forgery, and killing off many minor characters. Stewie has been on getting rid of his mom since the beginning of the show, and has commented several times on the subject to other people, such as when he is being interviewed when the family become part of a reality show; "It's not really that I want to kill her... it's just that I want her not to be alive... any more." His matricidal tendencies are primarily as a result of her constantly (and unknowingly) getting in the way of his evil plans, so he desires to kill her so he can carry out his plans without interference. His attempts are always fruitless in the end, usually resulting from various unfortunate circumstances getting in the way, such as her opening a cupboard door as he attempts to blow a poison dart at her, or simply moving out of the way when he is about to shoot her with a crossbow. In the more recent seasons, Stewie has a larger amount of freedom from his parents, usually spending much of his time with Brian. This extends to the point of him being able to keep pigs from parallel universes ("Road to the Multiverse") or take part in the television series Jolly Farm ("Go Stewie Go"), as compared to the first season, in which his plans were constantly hindered by Lois. In "The Hand That Rocks the Wheelchair", Stewie inadvertently clones an evil twin of himself after trying to increase his evil nature. By the end of the episode, it is suggested that the original Stewie may have been unknowingly killed by Brian (as he cannot tell them apart) and Stewie turns to the camera with glowing yellow eyes (reminiscent of Michael Jackson's "Thriller"). But so far, the Stewie recently seen in "Trading Places", the follow-up episode, he still seems to have his mostly harmless eccentricity, shown when he asks Brian if he wants to trade places with him for fun. Stewie has had a few rare interactions with his apparent pedophile neighbor Herbert. It should be known that Stewie intensely dislikes him and even calls him a pervert. All this does, however, is move Herbert into thinking Stewie as "feisty".

When Stewie travels to the 1960s and falls in love in "Valentine's Day in Quahog", he learns that the infant he kissed is really his mother when Carter arrives to pick her up.

In the double episode "Stewie Kills Lois"/"Lois Kills Stewie", Stewie appears to have finally killed Lois who a year after returns to Quahog, much to Stewie's dismay. At the Griffin home, Stewie takes his family hostage and, after killing Cleveland Brown, ties them up and forces Brian at gunpoint to drive him to CIA HQ. As Stewie gains world domination, a humiliated Lois shows up at Stewie's compound and after a bloody fight Stewie is killed, not by Lois but Peter. However, the events are reverted in a deus ex machina ending, where most of the story turns out to be a computer simulation. Because of the rather disastrous ending for himself in the simulation, he decides to put his plans of matricide and world domination aside for the time being.

Appearance[]

Stewie is a short, tubby, baby with an abnormally shaped head. His head sort of looks like a football. He has 9 strands of black hair that are combed over his head from front to back. His eyes are big and round and far apart. He wears a yellow shirt and red overalls and light blue shoes.

Personality[]

The entire Griffin family has gone through quite a few changes as the series has progressed, going from immature jerks to emotionally unbalanced lunatics. Stewie, however, has gone through the most changes.

He ended up progressing backwards and has became less evil. The most evil plan he successfully pulled off was to trap a group of toddlers in a secret pit because they had displeased him. He called it "The Club of Forgotten Children" and they all presumably starved to death. Stewie would normally unflinchingly commit acts like murder, theft, hijacking, bombing and extortion among many, many others and embraced this depraved personality disorder of his. He never managed to kill a member of his family even though he tried to do so in almost every episode in the earlier seasons, most notably his mother Lois. Furthermore, he did help them whenever it suited him.

Since the fourth season, Stewie has become more well-rounded and quirky as a character. He has become far less evil and more or less like the rest of the family had been in the first few seasons. Even so, Stewie has retained some of his malicious traits but directs them to other members of the world instead of his family who he has visibly grown to care for. Stewie was originally a very unsocial kid who could not even have normal conversations with his family. He instead spent his time building a huge array of weapons and gadgets which seemed capable of almost anything. His British accent and loathing for just about everything with a heartbeat were very noticeable in earlier seasons. Stewie also had an absurdly wide vocabulary in earlier seasons and used huge words for situations that did not require them.

In the present seasons, Stewie is far more laid back and flamboyant, even enjoying his family's company. One running gag with Stewie that has become popular is his sexual orientation. He has had crushes on several girls (i.e. Janet, Penelope), but has also been very public with his struggling homosexuality. He also seems to not completely understand sex. At first, he did not even like the topic; he recently appears to understand it more, but is still ignorant to some its more specific details. However, he still has moments that show he hasn't reformed as he still acts mean to those he dislikes.

What's more, Stewie has demonstrated insecurity and narcissism in ways that makes many of his criticisms and meddling towards Brian hypocritical. While a fair amount of Stewie's condescending to and ball-busting of Brian can be considered justified, it is actually a a form of attacking himself while using Brian as a substitute because deep down Stewie recognizes his flaws in Brian, but refuses to admit to them. When he had a session with the child psychologist, Dr. Cecil Pritchfield, Stewie's barriers were broken down, revealing he is really an insecure little boy who wears his airs of superiority and sophistication like a security blanket because he is afraid of being like everyone else, unremarkable and average, leading him to let Dr. Pritchfield die of a heart attack so no one else would know the truth. Part of the reason Stewie attacks his family in the ways he does is to knock them down from feeling good or proud about themselves whether or not it's deserved because Stewie can't stand for anyone else in his family or their friends to feel good and proud of themselves or their accomplishments compared to Stewie's own, whether or not his own pride and achievements are justified, which they usually aren't. His insecurity has been shown multiple times in recent years, such as burning his trophy case when he found out they were all just participation awards (which accidentally burned the house) and angrily disowning his beloved teddy bear Rupert when he found out Rupert used to belong to Chris and later deciding he had to kill Chris and Rupert in order for himself to move on, until he found out Chris had intended to give Rupert back to Stewie, which Stewie accepted but he "encouraged" Chris they forget the attempt he made on his brother's life never happened. He once admitted to Brian that he (Stewie) has a pathological need to be liked.

He also once tried to befriend fellow troublemaker Bart Simpson in the Simpsons Guy crossover. However, as both of them have completely different bad boy personalities due to the difference in comedic style between both series (Bart pulls pranks and vandalism, though he has a few redeeming qualities and is not all bad, in contrast to Stewie who is more of a sociopath as he has a violent and disturbing personality), Bart became creeped out by Stewie especially after learning that Stewie kidnapped all of his enemies (Nelson Muntz, Jimbo Jones, Principal Skinner, Sideshow Bob and Apu, just to say the pun "I took a-poo.") and chose not to befriend him, devastating Stewie.

Quotes[]

You know, my hooligan friend, I've been racking my brain in a thus far fruitless attempt to resolve our recent unpleasantness. Then it dawned on me. Your cruelty merely stems from some deep-seated inner pain. So, the obvious remedy is a healthy dose of OUTER PAIN!
~ Stewie to the bully who stole his tricycle in "The Kiss Seen Around The World".

I'M NOT GONNA LIE DOWN FOR SOME FRAT BOY B*STARD WITH HIS DAMN TEVA SANDALS AND HIS SKOAL BANDITS AND HIS ABERCROMBIE AND FITCH LONG SLEEVE, OPEN STITCH, CREW NECK HENLEY SMOKING HIS STICKY BUDS OUT OF A SODA CAN WHILE WATCHING HIS FAVORITE DOWNLOADED SIMPSONS EPISODES EVERY NIGHT! YES, WE ALL LOVE "MR. PLOW!" OH, YOU'VE GOT THE SONG MEMORIZED, DO YOU? SO DOES EVERYONE ELSE! THAT IS EXACTLY THE KIND OF IDIOT YOU'D SEE AT TACO BELL AT 1:00 IN THE MORNING! THE GUY WHO JUST WHIFFED HIS WAY DOWN THE BAR SKANK LADDER!
~ Stewie.
If anyone is going to take that b*tch down, its gonna be me!
~ Stewie after he stops Diane from killing Lois.
What the deuce!?
~ Stewie.

  • Kidnaps a bully to get revenge for stealing his bike.
  • Assaults a stranger for not buying his lemonade.
  • When a guard in the airport gives Stewie advice to not run away from his problems, but face them, Stewie "thanks" him by freezing him in carbonite.
  • Using Chris as an android.
  • Stealing Meg's diary (just like the rest of the family).

  • Setting up his babysitter to get fired for not letting him touch her chest.

  • Tries to cheat at a skiing contest against a kid’s father. When he loses, he has his butler pour hot tea on the kid.
  • Carjacking someone.
  • He convinces Brian to take it slow with Carolyn. When this leads to Brian losing Carolyn to Cleveland, Stewie tells Brian that he should've banged her when he had the chance and even denied telling Brian to wait when he angrily brought it up. This could suggest that Stewie set Brian up to lose Carolyn.
  • Tries to kill a kid named Brad for beating him at a swimming race.
  • Kills his future self with a raygun, even after being saved by him.
  • Impersonates an air traffic controller and tricks a pilot into crashing his plane into the ocean.
  • Signs himself and Brian up for the army without the latter's consent.
  • Tries to back out of his own plan of having himself and Brian shooting each other's foot when Brian's bullet misses.
  • It is implied he killed seven babies without remorse.
  • In a popular moment, he aggressively beats Brian for not having his money. His attempts at getting Brian to pay up ended up becoming outright torture to the point of shooting both his knees before lighting him on fire.
  • Just to teach Brian a point, he burns down a liquor store and kills a stranger's dog.
  • Attempted to murder Santa Claus due to a mall Santa ignoring him, but he spares the real Santa due to him being unwell and wanting Stewie to kill him.

  • He destroyed various parts of the world with Penelope.
  • Tricked Brian into eating his feces, just for his amusement.
  • He chains up Quagmire and Cleveland in the basement and forces them to watch the 24-Hour DirecTV help channel to the point that they are able to recite everything being said on the TV.
  • Eats food on the job while working at McBurgertown, which gets him fired.
  • He used Meg's hats as diapers and referred to her as "Dog" when the family came back home.

  • Killing a prince that wanted to marry Meg and give her a happy life before wiping Meg's memory of it ever happening, albeit he was mainly focused on saving Meg from slavery.
  • Threatens to shoot Brian if he doesn't eat the feces from his diaper.
  • During Brian's date with a blind woman, Stewie cuts Brian's wagging tail off with a scalpel when Brian wanted him to hold it still. He then tries to cauterize the wound, putting Brian in more pain. He then tries to inject him with morphine and tells him to pretend he's at the vet, causing Brian to bark in panic and expose himself as a dog.
  • He brutally kills his half-brother Bertram after he killed Stewie's ancestor, Leonardo da Vinci. Although Bertram without question deserved it as he nearly destroyed the entire universe by doing so, Stewie still remorselessly killed his younger brother without a millisecond of hesitation, which is extremely vile to say the least.
  • After other children recognized Lois as Saggy Naggy, Stewie joins them in physically assaulting Lois by knocking her out with a golf club and then kicked her repeatedly in the head.
  • Spanking Chris for talking back when he was in trouble without even hearing him out.
  • He, Brian, and Greased Up Deaf Guy set up Jake Tucker into getting arrested for the possession of drugs and sentenced to 200 hours of community service for getting Chris in trouble.
  • He goes through a "mine" phase and breaks Lois' pearl necklace.
  • After Lois slapped him, Stewie developed a love of getting hit, and attempts to provoke her anger to get her to hit him again.
  • Sets up Connie DiMico into getting arrested for pedophilia when she ends his popularity.
  • Shot Brian's past self in the leg to make past Stewie and Brian return to their present.
  • Tries to shoot a kid who knocked over his sandcastle with a freshly assembled gun at point blank, only for it to implode on him.
  • Hit Brian in the crotch with a hockey stick after his future self saved Brian's life.
  • Ends up launching the space shuttle the family is in and gives Lois the finger when she tried to comfort him.
  • He opened the cargo bay doors of the space shuttle on Meg to give her a scare. When that gets her sucked into space, he realizes what he just did in shock.
  • Allowed the child psychologist of his preschool to die since he had revealed his true self to the psychologist. Interestingly, this is one of the few times Stewie shows remorse, as he struggles to sleep that night. However, while admitting to Brian that he did something terrible, he refused to discuss it.
  • Implied that he left an overdosed Mother Teresa alone in front of an emergency hospital without help out of his car.
  • He abducts Peter, Joe, Quagmire, and Brian and hooks them up to a simulation to try and prove that Peter and Brian's friendship was just a coincidence. He also does the same to Lois, Meg, and Bonnie.
  • Got into a fight with Chris over a massage chair at an electric appliance store that Brian took them to while he was returning a keyboard causing havoc and damage worth $3,000 and initially refused to chip in along with Chris leaving Brian to do it in spite of the fact that Brian wasn't responsible for their petty squabble.
  • Uses his time machine to mess with Brian’s past.
  • When he and Chris were debating on the gender of a squirrel they were nursing back to health, before Brian mauled it to death, Stewie reveals he confirmed the squirrel's gender by checking with his finger and "really getting it in there", causing Chris to call him out for inadvertently molesting the squirrel.
  • Pretends to want Meg to comfort him during his tantrum so he can break her nose with a headbutt.
  • Teams up with Chris to make sure Brian's dates know that Brian has herpes so that they'd dump him. They even hack his Facebook account. Although Brian deserved this for giving them the incurable disease in the first place, when he tells one of his dates about his herpes himself and she doesn’t care, Stewie kills her and tells Brian that he's gonna die alone.
  • Shrinks Brian as payback for taking away his dog whistle and making fun of his height.
  • Beats Brian up and holds a gun to his head for mauling Rupert to pieces.
  • Lures Brian and Chris into his man-cave and tries to kill them with arrows from a crossbow for lying about liking his man-cave constantly and making very insulting comments towards it and himself behind his back, but loud enough for him to hear them. However, they actually deserved it. And when they mock Stewie and his crossbow behind his back after he speared their lives, Stewie draws the line and shoots them anyway.
  • Forces Brian to kill the latter's future self for pranking him.
  • He tries to kill Chris in order to have Rupert all to himself. Although Stewie saves Chris from drowning upon learning that Chris was going to give Rupert back to him anyway, when Stewies asks Chris if he remembers what happened, he claims Chris to have answered correctly when he fearfully replies no, meaning Chris was afraid of what Stewie would do to him if he told anyone what happened.
  • Shoots Brian over the latter eating the former's breakfast cookies.
  • Uses Brian’s DNA to make himself pregnant without Brian’s consent.
  • He convinces Brian that they should commit suicide to avoid getting hunted by their loan shark, only to chicken out at the last second as Brian falls to his death. When he confronts the Brian that got teleported to Las Vegas, Stewie lies about having tried to talk his Brian out of committing suicide.
  • Gets Brian fired from his job at Mega Hardware (which causes Brian to lose his insurance) and claims that Brian got himself fired. He then causes Brian to rupture a hernia. He operates for Brian, but uses a staple gun to seal the incision against Brian's instructions.
  • In The Simpsons Guy, crossover episode with The Simpsons, he kidnaps Nelson Muntz and tortures him, including having Nelson literally eat Stewie's pants. Later, he does the same thing to Bart's other foes like Sideshow Bob, Seymour Skinner, Jimbo Jones, and Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, but Stewie kidnapping Apu was solely so he could make a toilet humor joke.
  • In the deleted scene of Hannah Banana, while trying to make Brian buy tickets to Hannah Montana, Stewie kidnaps Brian's siblings and tortures them in various execution rooms, even going so far as to kill one of them in front of Brian's eyes to explain his intentions.

Trivia[]

  • Stewie's voice is an impression of Steve Coogan.
  • He is quite similar to Manny Heffley as both of them are the youngest of three siblings, very young age, get away with a lot of things that they should never, and are rather smart and manipulative.
  • In the episode "Peter's Lost Youth", it's revealed that Stewie is a Taurus which means that his birthday falls between April 20 and May 20.
  • While many characters, especially Peter and Brian, were flanderized into becoming darker characters as the series progressed, Stewie changed in a more positive manner.
