Villain Overview

Holy crap!
~ Peter's most famous catchphrase.
Roadhouse!
~ One of Peter's catchphrases.
Shut up, Meg.
~ Another of Peter's catchphrases to his daughter Meg Griffin whenever she says something nice, cute, adorable or some nasty things about her father who is a complete idiot.

Peter Löwenbräu Griffin, Sr., born as Justin Peter Griffin, Sr., is the titular main protagonist of the Family Guy franchise.

He is the father of Chris Griffin, Stewie Griffin and Meg Griffin, biological father of Bertram, husband of Lois Griffin, and friend/owner of Brian Griffin. He is a man in his early 40s who lives on 31 Spooner Street in Quahog, Rhode Island.

While Peter is the protagonist, he's not as nice as most would like to imagine. He has caused others misfortune, on account of his own stupidity and his deliberate attempts to better himself, which often backfire. He's not alone in these respects, as he has a bullying sister named Karen Griffin and an abusive fanatical stepfather named Francis Griffin, suggesting antagonism runs in his family. This would then explain the behavior of his children (although, in fairness, Peter does have caring moments, despite the fact they are increasingly rare).

He was originally presented as a morally ambiguous anti-hero, but later in the series, he was mostly presented as a protagonist villain and sometimes a full antagonist.

He is voiced by the series creator Seth MacFarlane, who also voices Glenn Quagmire, Carter Pewterschmidt, Brian Griffin, Stewie Griffin, Darth Stewie, Emperor Carter, Evil Stewie, Stewie Wilkes, and Retep in the same series, as well as Stan Smith and Roger Smith in American Dad! and Mike in Sing.

Appearance[]

Peter is an obese man with peach skin, short brown hair, blue or green eyes depending on the episode, and a large cleft chin. He wears a white buttoned shirt with a collar and slightly rolled up sleeves with green dress pants, a black belt with a yellow buckle, white socks, brown shoes and glasses, which Peter claims to have come from a doctor Halloween costume in the episode "Roasted Guy." He is 6 feet tall and weighs at least 270 lbs.

Personality[]

Meg: You are completely selfish, and totally irresponsible as a father. You have no education, you have no interests, you just do whatever reckless thing you want to do, whenever you want to do it, without regard for anyone else. Oh, oh, oh, and when you're not terrorizing the community with your impulsive escapades, you're being a total jerk to your family! You shove your daughter's face in your ass and you fart on it! [Peter laughs] God, if someone in the outside world could see the way you treat me, you would be in jail! [Peter laughs again and Meg fake laughs in return] Oh, this is amusing to you? Well, see if you find this funny!
Peter: I like where this is going.
Meg: You're a fat, lazy, abusive, blue-collar, Irish-Catholic dad who drinks WAY too much, and barely makes enough to support his family! You've lived half your life, and you have nothing to show for it! Your only arguable accomplishments are your kids, and look at us! We're a disaster! You're a total and complete embarrassment in every possible way. Take a good look at yourself, Peter Griffin. You're a waste of a man.
Peter: Wait a second, these are criticisms.
~ Meg to Peter, explaining in detail what a bad father he is.

Peter is a lazy, obnoxious, rude, arrogant, short-tempered, selfish, stubborn, dimwitted, and reckless person who causes a great deal of harm and misery to those around him. Some of his more defining traits are his borderline alcoholism and drug abusing habits, which tend to leave him in a state of incomprehension that can often harm innocent bystanders or send him into unrestrained stupors. Most of his time is spent getting wasted, going wherever and doing whatever he wants, having a murder count in the thousands, and costing thousands to millions of dollars in damage with his drunken or quasi-sober tomfoolery. He has also been willing to do more for his friends (Glenn Quagmire, Joe Swanson, and Cleveland Brown) than his family as well.

Another example of his negative aspects is how terrible he is to his wife, Lois. Peter almost always takes her for granted, despite her being the daughter of billionaire Carter Pewterschmidt, very attractive, and having the affections of others who were obviously better people than him. There are more than enough instances to show Peter is cheating on Lois, such as when he admits on live TV, and when he is openly shown to have attractions for or interests in other women and/or former sexual partners. Even Lois' own terrible treatment of Peter is not enough to even the score or to be considered karma because of how he appallingly neglects and treats her. He even had sex with her while she was disguised as another woman, despite not knowing it was her.

He is also shown to be an absolutely abusive, manipulative, atrocious, and cheating father by demeaning, degrading, demoralizing, and downright abusing his family, especially Meg and Brian in particular; Peter actually left the former behind when she was in danger, saying he and Lois decided if they needed to leave a child behind, it would be Meg. Even when he started to like her when she became his driver and promised to be secret friends when he got his license back, he outright dropped that promise the next episode. He'd even outright kill her for no reason. Even back when he was a decent yet misguided father, he showed no regard for Brian's feelings about not being seen as an equal. Along with this, he openly admits to Lois that he hates their kids simply because they do not do anything he likes or are not entertaining to him. However, there have been moments where Peter is there for his family, having good times with them, getting laughs, and taking them to places such as amusement parks or parties, although these moments are extremely rare in later seasons. More importantly, he was a much better father in the earlier seasons as mentioned below.

While Peter was no saint in the earlier seasons, where he was depicted as oafish, impulsive, ignorant, somewhat inconsiderate, and even misogynistic at his worse, Peter was overall a naïve, silly, and well-meaning man who was prone to causing trouble but he usually had good intentions and would actually learn from his mistakes. The most notable difference is that he was also a loving father and husband that cared about his family and tried to do what he thought was best for them (one episode at the time involved him saying he'd take a bullet for Meg), this is no longer the case in later seasons as he becomes an unlikable, malicious, evil, psychopathic, immature jerk who helps others for personal gain, often resorts to illegal or criminal actions, abuses his family, and is somehow always excused for his actions, as he blames it on being mentally challenged despite being perfectly aware of what he's doing. In the cruel and bizarre world of Family Guy, every character has their share of maliciousness. However, Peter takes the cake, as the scenes where he is likable and sympathetic pale in comparison to his nastiness. It has gotten to the point where critics and fans outright hate him for being a shell of his oafish but well-meaning self.

He sometimes cares for his son Chris, which can be seen when he tells Chris he wants him to remain as a kid or when Peter says that drugs are bad to him and that he shouldn't smoke dope.

Peter has also shown little to no remorse in committing various crimes; in one instance, he blows up a children's hospital by mistake in an attempt to blow up a nearby sign and downplays the entire thing, since the sign is burned in the aftermath. In "Tales of a Third Grade Nothing", Peter goes on a killing spree, murdering three children, which could possibly be his own children, after Brian replaces his “I can't believe it's not butter” with real butter. Peter also deliberately pushes a child in front of Lois' car as she is driving off in "Brian's Play."

Peter is also a massive hypocrite, as he sometimes calls out the other villains in the show on their bad deeds, despite the fact that he has done many terrible things that are often worse than what they did themselves.

It has also been evidenced that Peter is severely depressed. He once told Lois that he "[hasn't] been happy in a long time." Lois does not react to this and says that she is aware, as he has told her this multiple times prior.

Peter: Meg, I'm only going to say this once. You may be an adult, but you're still my daughter, and it's my job to protect you from errant wieners. So, I don't care how old you are, you're going to do what I say and get in the damn car!
~ Peter after stopping Meg from sleeping with Quagmire.

Trivia[]

  • Peter's voice is an impression of Richard Kind.
  • Peter was based on a security guard of the college that Seth MacFarlane went to.
  • In earlier seasons, it is pretty obvious Peter is the protagonist; however, in new episodes, as other characters begin to take the spotlight, Peter appears as a villain protagonist most of the time and the main antagonist in multiple episodes.
  • In some instances, Peter has been shown to change, to the point of becoming a relatively normal person and better parent. In the second episode of the series, "I Never Met the Dead Man", he becomes more active after breaking free from his TV addiction. On "The Most Interesting Man" he becomes intelligent and classier. However, on both occasions, his family tries to turn him back because they find him overbearing, not fun and/or better than them. Unfortunately, this just shows how dependent everyone has become on the cyclical toxicity of their relationships with Peter.
  • In the Five Peter Generation, Peter's favorite alcohol is a Three-Martini Lunch. His father's favorite alcohol is a Five Scotch Breakfast, his grandfather's favorite alcohol is a "Three exes drawn on the jug" Corn Whiskey Moonshine, and his great-grandfather's favorite alcohol is a rice wine.
  • He likes Garfield. An example of this is seen during a flashback where Peter sets the house up like a castle, and only lets Lois in because she rents Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties. In "Peter's Def Jam", Peter only realizes that he is deaf when he can't hear Garfield on the TV.
