The Westway Refrigerated Truck is the main antagonist in Stephen King's 1997 horror film Trucks. The Truck acts as a vehicle that became possessed by an unknown force, giving it a thirst for human carnage. The Truck terrorizes the main protagonists throughout the story and causes as much death and destruction as it possibly can.

Appearance[]

The Westway Refrigerated Truck is a 1984 Western Star 4964, with a black grille guard and a red and silver paint job. It hauls a refrigerated trailer with a logo that says, "Westway Refrigerated, Guaranteed Cool". The logo features a polar bear and it is found on the cab of the truck and both sides of the trailer. Inside the trailer are frozen meats that are kept cold and frozen until reach to its assigned destination.

Biography[]

The Westway Refrigerated Truck first appears at a grocery lot, when it's driver makes a snarky comment towards one of our main characters Hope. After leaving the lot, the truck travels along a country road when it soon starts acting strange. The driver tries to control the swerving rig, but soon stops and gets out to take a look. He looks under the rig and alongside it, but decides to also look inside the trailer. The door of the trailer closes and the driver gets trapped inside, presumably freezing him to death. Hope soon arrives in her van, now occupying tourists Jack, Thad, and Abby. They spot the truck and think the driver has left, they continue onward without stopping. Not long after, the refrigerated truck starts up and follows them at a distance. The survivors arrive at a junkyard, and notice an old GMC truck that was parked dangerously close to the road. Not knowing the truck had killed the junkyard's owner, the group attempt to move the truck off the road. After they move the truck and take pictures with it, The Westway Refrigerated Truck charges at them. It misses them and instead destroys the GMC truck before storming through the junkyard. As the truck rounds the corner, Hope attempts to get back into her van, but a male traveler, Thad, pulls her away and the rampaging truck smashes the van, driving off afterward. Another character Ray gets a call from Hope who states the situation they are in. He immediately gets in his station wagon and drives off to pick them up. He encounters the truck on his way to the junkyard, but manages to steer clear before the truck collides head-on with him. The truck soon arrives at the truck stop and immediately starts driving in circles. It almost hits the Yeagers, a traveling couple, but the pair manage to get inside their cabin in time. (Albeit without noticing what was happening behind them.) Ray picks up the survivors and they are chased by a Ford "Cherry-Picker" all the way back to the truck stop. Soon after arriving, the group are immediately swarmed by two more trucks, splitting them up. Thad, Hope, Jack and Ray manage to get inside the main building. However, Ray's son, Logan, attempts to save Abby, Thad's Daughter. The pair end up getting separated and end up inside the cabin with the Yeagers. The four trucks soon band together, and chaos endures.

By nightfall, the truck stop is in ruin. The Westway Refrigerated Truck accompanied by four other trucks have managed to kill two of their drivers' as well as the Yeagers. As a result of the scuffle, the trucks are low on fuel, and demand the survivors to refill their tanks. The hostages decide to obey the trucks' orders. After refueling the trucks, the humans attempt to make their escape. Thad and Abby take Logan's motorcycle, and Ray, Hope and Logan attempt to hide in the woods. Ray's father George stays behind and covers the trio as they escape. One truck attempts to attack George, he responds by shooting at it with a revolver, which damages the truck and sends it into a ditch. The Refrigerated Truck watches the whole scene happen, and it becomes furious. Revving its mighty diesel engine, the truck drops it's trailer and charges full speed at George. He fires several shots at the truck, to no avail. The refrigerated truck runs over George before careening into the truck stop's main building. As a result, the truck gets stuck, and quickly attempts to back itself out. Ray seeks revenge for his father's sacrifice, he grabs a shotgun found on the crashed truck in the ditch and shoots at a propane tank next to the Refrigerated Truck's fuel tank. The truck and building explode in a huge fireball, and the remaining survivors flee into the woods before the only remaining truck can catch them.

The next morning, the survivors reach the gravel pits where a helicopter is searching for survivors. The humans signal the flying aircraft and wait for it to come down. As they descend a gravel hill, Ray hears noises coming from the quarry entrance. The refrigerated truck managed to pull itself from the burning building. The truck is completely charred, it's missing one exhaust stack, and the other stack is hanging crooked. It's interior is destroyed, it's sleeper is burnt, and all it's glass has shattered. Ray, Hope, and Logan scramble towards the helicopter as the truck gives chase. The helicopter touches down and the humans scramble to get on. The Refrigerated Truck charges at the helicopter as fast it can, but the aircraft pulls up faster than it can make it. The truck plunges into a pond, finally killing it, and putting the characters at ease. The survivors are flown to safety after their harrowing ordeal is finally over.
