Vaal is the main antagonist of the Star Trek: The Original Series episode "The Apple". It was an artificial intelligence.
Biography[]
Vaal was installed on Gamma Trianguli VI at least 10,000 years before the Enterprise's visit. It controlled the planet and its people, regulating the environment and providing them with food, talking to them through their leader Akuta. In return, it was fed to replenish its energy supplies. Although the population were content, they were also stagnant. No children had been born in thousands of years, with Vaal forbidding love and sexual relations.
When the Enterprise arrived on the planet, Vaal soon saw the crew as a threat to the stability of the situation and turned the environment against a landing party. Three security officers were killed by poisonous plants, exploding rocks and lightning strikes respectively. It also locked a beam on the Enterprise, holding it in orbit and draining its power reserves so it would eventually crash.
Despite this, as Vaal had feared, the Enterprise crew made contact with the local population who began to gain new ideas for them. Vaal as a result ordered Akuta to have his crew kill the landing party. It also attempted to kill Spock with a lightning bolt, but he survived because Vaal was unaware where his heart was located. The Vaalians attack the Enterprise crew, killing Ensign Marple, but their inexperience with violence caused them to be easily overpowered.
Kirk had Vaal's followers locked up, realising its power levels would drop if it did not receive sustenance. As a result, when Vaal signalled feeding time, no-one was allowed to attend to it. Vaal was weakened and the forcefield protecting it lost power. This allowed the Enterprise to fire on it with the ship's phasers, destroying it.
