Having fun, Policenaut? How long do you expect to last here when you can barely handle a bit of SAS? Or is it time to pop another pill? This is Beyond. Totally different ball game from what you Terrestrials are used to.
~ Tony Redwood revealing his colours, when he is met at BCP's AP Room.
Tell me. Still think you can beat me? No one's ever killed a Frozener.
~ Tony Redwood taunting Jonathan Ingram.

Anthony "Tony" Redwood is one of the main antagonists of the Konami videogame Policenauts. He is a "Frozener", a kind of artificially-conceived humans who possess genes best suited to the environment of outer space. He initially appears to be a ace EMPS pilot of the Beyond Coast Police's Advanced Police. He is eventually discovered to be the go-to hitman of the Tokugawa's Narc drug- and organ smuggling conspiracy.

He is responsible for killing many of the story's main characters. Most notably Lorraine Hojo, the ex-wife of protagonist Jonathan Ingram, which prompts Jonathan to come out and confront his past.

Tony Redwood was voiced by late Kaneto Shiozawa.

Biography[]

Early life / before the prologue[]

ChrisBabyPolicenautsPS1

Young Chris Goldwin with newborn Tony Redwood

Tony Redwood is a frozener birthed by Chris Goldwin. He has a brother named Ridley Redwood, who was birthed by a different mother. Because Frozeners are government property, he was mainly raised in a unspecified institution operated by Tokugawa and/or his businesses. Because of Tokugawa's arrangement with Chris, she would occasionally be able to see Tony.

It is not known what caused Tony Redwood to grow into such psychopath. It is known that a unspecified point, he had become a addict to the synthetic drug known as Narc.

He become employed at Beyond Coast Police Department's Advance Police, where he worked at both; the bomb squad and the EMPS assault team. He particularly demonstrated proficiency with use of Goddard-type EMPS, which lead him became known as "Mr. Goddard" in the BCP. While at AP, he was presumably singled out by Gates Becker to serve as the main hitman for Tokugawa and his criminal activities.

Prologue[]

RedwoodProloguePS1

Tony Redwood disguised as a biker.

Tony Redwood first appears in the guise of a helmeted biker. Presumably under orders of Gates Becker, he has been instructed to kill Lorraine Hojo, after her husband, Kenzo Hojo, has provided her with items that may incriminate Tokugawa and expose the entire operation.

He tracks Lorraine to Old Los Angeles on earth, where she comes in contact with Jonathan Ingram, ex-Policenaut who was married with Lorraine before his spacewalk accident. As Lorraine is talking with Jonathan, Redwood has accessed the underside of Lorraine's rental car, setting a car bomb to kill her. Despite Jonathan having acquired the evidence already, Redwood decides to explode the car bomb Lorraine reaches the proximity of the car, with her halting shortly when Jonathan yells through the window, trying to warn her in vain. The explosion mortally wounds her, prompting Jonathan to chase him.

RedwoodFlightClosePS1

Tony Redwood's introduction during the spaceflight to Beyond Coast.

Jonathan enters a fierce gunfight with Redwood, shooting him untold times. Redwood shrugs the wounds off, thanks to being a Frozener with innately superhuman pain tolerance and presumably Narc dulling his pain. Redwood keeps avoiding and firing back at Jonathan, until he is able to hide in silence of the nearby alley. To taunt his pursuer, he leaves a message "I'll Kill You" in his own white-colored artificial blood. Redwood starts his bike in the dark alley and tries to drive over Ingram, who survives, but Redwood escapes him. After leaving the scene, Lorraine dies to her wounds in the arms of Jonathan, completing his mission.

Jonathan, who decides to pursue Lorraine's wishes, travels to Beyond Coast in order to uncover the mystery behind Hojo's disappearance. As Jonathan travels to Beyond, he meets Redwood on the Space Lines Flight, introducing themselves to each other.

Act I[]

Boom. Now we have a hole in the colony. A sociopath won't necessarily opt for red. The answer's blue. I always go for blue myself.
~ Tony Redwood's mind games regarding bomb building.
RedwoodAPBombPS1

Tony Redwood at AP quarters of BCP, holding a dummy bomb.

After Jonathan arrives on Beyond Coast, meets up his old friend Ed Brown at "vice" of the BCP's who offers to tour Jonathan around the place.

Upon arrival to the BCP quarters of the AP, Jonathan finds Redwood again. However, while maintaining the same chillingly calm appearance, Redwood's personality has become more abusive, mocking Jonathan for his Space Adaptation Syndrome and Ed for running the "junkyard of BCP." After the introductions, Redwood unveils a bomb, asking Jonathan if he'd cut the red or blue wire. Jonathan chooses "red for Redwood", which makes a buzzer go off, and Redwood telling that Jonathan has failed horribly and caused untold damage. He then claims that "a sociopath won't necessarily opt for red", and that he will "always go for blue". At that point Jonathan and Ed may have not realized it, but Redwood uses this information to build a bomb that would explode if the blue wire is cut, believing Jonathan and Ed would fall for the trap.

When Jonathan and Ed visit the BCCH (Beyond Coast Central Hospital), they meet Chris Goldwin, whom they knew when they were Policenauts, having become the BCCH director. While looking around at Chris' office, they find a photo of Chris holding a baby, that's actually Tony Redwood, whom Chris had birthed as a surrogate mother for the Frozener. When asked about it, Chris denies the baby being hers.

Act II[]

After Jonathan and Ed have accessed the CD at BCCH's T-Gear computer to learn the truth about the capsules given by Lorraine, the hospital director Chris Goldwin alerts the partisans of the conspiracy. Redwood goes to Victor Jurgens of the BCP's Forensics and orders Jurgens to give the original capsules.

After Jonathan and Ed hear of what has happened to go to confront Redwood. Redwood claims that capsules given by Lorraine are just common medicine, but when Jonathan gets one of the capsules back, he realizes that those are not the ones Lorraine gave him. Before Jonathan can act, Redwood leaves, telling that he has to "review security for the anniversary parade" and that he is getting tired of Jonathan and Ed's shenanigans.

After Jonathan and Ed survive the trap set at them in the Astronaut Memorial Museum the two go over the details of the case. During this time, Redwood has accessed the duo's police car and trying to plant a bomb, like the one that killed Lorraine in the Prologue. However, Ed eventually catches "somebody's playing mechanic" with their police car and shouts at him to get his attention, forcing Redwood to flee before having planted the bomb.

RedwoodHostagePS1

Tony Redwood in his biker outfit without the helmet, holding Chris Goldwin hostage.

Redwood runs to his bike and Jonathan recognizes him as Lorraine's killer, that is, Redwood in his biker get-up. Redwood attempts to flee bike with Jonathan and Ed pursuing him in the police car. They get in a high speed car chase and later in a shootout at the train station. During a shoot-out with Redwood, the Jonathan and Ed notice that the perpetrator bleeds white and blood and secure it to be analyzed by Victor Jurgens.

Jonathan and Ed pursue Tony inside the train, trailing him until Tony tries to use his helmet to trick the duo into shooting a child. The plan fails and in the next cart, Redwood, still concealing his face with balaclava, takes inexplicably present Chris Goldwin hostage (she was there on purpose to secure Redwood's escape.) Redwood escapes while Jonathan and Ed tend shaken Chris.

Ed informs Meryl Silverburgh and Dave Forrest to intercept Redwood, who escapes into a nearby store and enters in a shoot-out with Meryl and Dave. During the shoot-out, Dave successfully manages to hit Redwood and rupturing his kidney, but is soon fatally shot by Redwood. After Jonathan and Ed arrive, with the perpetrator's eyes in mind of Jonathan, they find dying Dave. Dave, based on biker's shooting skills and movements, also determines that the perpetrator is Tony Redwood.

To buy time to escape Jonathan and Ed's pursuit, Tony hides a bomb in a store with multiple bags in order to keep the cops at bay. Jonathan and Ed enter the store, find the bomb and successfully disarm it, without falling for the red/blue wire trap Tony had masterminded back at Act I.

When the AP police arrives, this allows Tony to blend in with the rest of the team and escape. Redwood and the AP abduct Dave's body for the organ smuggling operation. Later it is revealed that Tony took Dave's kidney in revenge for him having shot and ruptured it during the aforementioned firefight between the two.

Act III[]

RedwoodBoardingPS1

Tony Redwood during AP's deployment.

When Gates blasts Jonathan and Ed over their actions in the previous chapter, Gates orders Jonathan to relinquish his gun. The gun is given to Redwood who uses it to execute Hojo, who was in bio-mort state, in order to set up Jonathan. All the while, Jonathan and Ed have stumbled in Narc farm located in Tokugawa Pharmaceuticals.

Jonathan and Ed, unaware that they are walking right into a trap, convince Gates Becker to conduct a raid on Tokugawa Pharmaceuticals. When leaving BCP, Jonathan and Ed see Tony Redwood preparing to board a EMPS to join the raid.

RedwoodGatesRaidPS1

BCP's AP raids Tokugawa Pharmaceuticals, with Tokugawa himself arriving to scene as well. The search reveals dead body of Kenzo Hojo, the man Jonathan has searched so tireless. Redwood arrives to inform Gates Becker that they have acquired video surveillance footage of Jonathan having shot Hojo, falsified evidence constructed from Jonathan and Ed's last entry.

After Jonathan escapes and hides with Karen Hojo, Ed calls Jonathan by phone. In one of the topics that player can discuss with Ed is the analysis of the white blood gathered during the train station shoot-out. Ed tells that it is the type of artificial blood used by the AP, and that it was full of Narc, saying that Redwood is "a real fan of the stuff".

Act IV an V[]

Redwood remains absent in chapters 4 and 5. When Jonathan and Karen Hojo arrive at BCCH, with Ed soon arriving, they find that Victor Jurgens of BCP Forensics, who was investigating a Frozener injured in the recent shoot-out, having been rendered a bio-mort. According to Tony Redwood in Act VII, he admits that he is responsible for this.

In Act V, when Jonathan and Ed go the Tokugawa Moon Plant, Redwood abducts Ed's adoptive son Marc. As Tony is the uncle of the boy (with his brother Ridley being Marc's biological father), he manages to get Marc to follow him without too much trouble.

Act VI[]

RedwoodGoddardAct6

Tony Redwood in his Goddard EMPS, after having shot Chris.

Jonathan and co. are instructed to AMM, where Ed Brown and Meryl head inside to try find Redwood. Ed Brown ultimately finds Marc with a astronaut, who turns out to be Redwood's accomplice, with Redwood soon appearing and shooting Ed Brown in front of the cameras and taunt Jonathan Ingram.

When Ed is taken to BCCH (Beyond Coast Central Hospital), Marc reveals a drawing of Redwood and his associate. Before Jonathan can deduce who the associate is, Meryl reveals a fact about Ed's past. Marc's father, whom Ed had shot, was Ridley Redwood, Tony's brother.

Jonathan deduces that the associate was Chris Goldwin, head of BCCH and runs into Ed's rooms. There Chris attempts to shut down Ed's life support in the hospital, but Jonathan exposes Chris and tries to reason with her. She reveals that she was the surrogate mother of Tony Redwood. When Jonathan finally convinces Chris to testify against Tokugawa, Redwood appears in his EMPS outside the building window and guns her down.

Act VII[]

Nobody. Nobody takes me out, Jonathan Ingram!
~ Tony Redwood's last words before jumping to his death.
RedwoodDeathPC98

Tony Redwood's death (PC-98 version).

RedwoodFallingPS1

Tony Redwood's demise (PS1/Saturn version).

Jonathan later begins a one-man raid on Tokugawa's headquarters, killing most of the AP force in the process before engaging in a one-on-one gunfight with Redwood, ending with Jonathan emerging victorious in the 30th floor staircase. Mortally wounded, Redwood refuses to admit defeat and vows never to be taken out, and he jumps off the staircase and falls to his death, laughing insanely.

In the PC-98 version, Redwood falls and hits the ground of the first floor reception area. Redwood lies motionless on the ground, surrounded by pool of his white blood, confirming his certain death in this version. In the PS1/Saturn version, after jumping, he disappears in the darkness below. While most likely dying, his death is not as certain as it was in the PC-98 version.

Personality[]

Ashtrays? If you need an ashtray, there's always Vice.
~ Tony Redwood mocking Jonathan Ingram's cigarette habits and Ed Brown's Vice Unit.

Tony Redwood is a emotionally stilted, despicable sociopath who takes pride in death he causes. In public, he is usually unsettlingly calm and would only start to emote when he gets excited in taunting his prey. When protagonist Jonathan Ingram meets him on the spacecraft for the first time, Redwood comes off as calm if a amicable man. But once Ingram meets Redwood in BCP, Redwood amicable facade disappears, starting to badmouth Jonathan and his partner, Ed Brown.

Redwood is also unapologetically deceitful person. Later in the game, when Jonathan and Ed discover the true nature of the capsules the former acquired from Lorraine on Earth (which are infact binary drugs meant to smuggle Narc to organized crime on earth), he had taken the original capsules from Victor Jurgens and replaced them with the non-Narc capsules meant for public sales.

He is also prone to mind-games. When met in BCP, he shows a bomb to Jonathan and Ed. He tries to trick the duo when Jonathan chooses the red cord in Redwood's quiz, with him declaring that "he will always go for the blue". Later, when Jonathan and Ed discover that Redwood is the bomber and have to disarm a bomb he made, Redwood has used the prior red/blue quiz to try trick the duo into cutting the blue wire, which will detonate the device. If the player is wise to this deception, they know not to fall for Redwood's trick and cut the red wire.

For a psychopath, he is a very proud man, and wounding his pride will lead him to carrying a dogged grudge, as evidenced by his desire to kill Jonathan Ingram simply for surviving his first encounter against him. Even when ultimately defeated, he decides to take his fate into his own hands and jump off to his death rather than accept being either arrested or killed by Jonathan Ingram.

Jonathan: Redwood... Chris... Chris was...
Redwood: My so-called mother? (beat) No shit.
~ Tony Redwood regarding the murder of his surrogate mother.

Redwood is also callous and uncaring towards his biological family. He brutally murders his birth mother Chris Goldwin with a EMPS, and when Jonathan asks if Redwood knew that she was his mother, he confirms he was fully aware of it. Also, during the final fight when Jonathan confronts Redwood about the death of his brother, Ridley, by the hands of Ed Brown (whom Redwood had just shot moments before), Redwood laughs it off, telling he couldn't care less about his brother.

Victims[]

  • Lorraine Hojo
  • Dave Forrest
  • Kenzo Hojo (executed when Hojo was in biomort state)
  • Victor Jurgens
  • Chris Goldwin

Trivia[]

  • He and his brother are named after real-life film director siblings Tony Scott and Ridley Scott.
  • Tony Redwood appears in Metal Gear Solid when Hal "Otacon" Emmerich explains Japanimation and giant robots inspiring him to work on Metal Gear REX. The scene featured in MGS1 is the AP deployment sequence from Act III of Policenauts.
  • Somewhat horrifically, both his voice actor Kaneto Shiozawa and namesake Tony Scott have died in similar manner as Tony Redwood did.
    • Kaneto Shiozawa died on May 9, 2000, after he fell down the stairway at his home and suffered a Cerebral contusion, dying mere few hours later. Tony Redwood's death occurs at a stairway and fatally falling to bottom floor (that's shown in detail on PC-98 version, but not on PS1/Saturn release.)
    • Tony Scott committed suicide on 19 August 2012 by jumping off the Vincent Thomas Bridge in Los Angeles, California. Tony Redwood jumps off from great height to kill himself to prevent Jonathan from either arresting or killing him.
  • It is possible to get him to appear at BCP's shooting range. When he demonstrates his shooting skills, he hits all the targets in the head some 3-5 times each. While this earns him a impressive score, the head-shots are not as valuable as the green targets on the targets' chest area.
  • His face looks quite similar to M'Quve from Mobile Suit Gundam. In the original anime, he was voiced by Kaneto Shiozawa, like Tony Redwood is.
