Hieronynous Hacker, also known as The Hacker, is the main antagonist of the 2002 PBS Kids TV series Cyberchase. He is an evil cyborg who is bent on taking over a computer-esque realm called Cyberspace for his own needs of power and glory.
He is voiced by Christopher Lloyd, who also did other villainous roles such as Judge Doom in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Rasputin in Don Bluth's Anastasia and Merlock the Magician from DuckTales: Treasure of the Lost Lamp.
Biography[]
Origins[]
Hacker was a cyborg created by Dr. Marbles, the chief technician Cyberspace's beloved ruler Motherboard. As usual, Hacker was designed to serve as Dr. Marble's assistant, and he, in turn, created a cybird named Digit LaBoid to serve as his own assistant. Despite his happy years working for Motherboard, Hacker grew power-hungry as he desired to rule over Cyberspace for himself. To that end, he attempted to destroy Motherboard by confiscating her Encryptor Chip that protects her from any viruses. Fortunately, Digit returns the chip back to Motherboard, who then gets Dr. Marbles to drain Hacker of his power supply and banish him to a cybersite called the Northern Frontier in exile.
Before Hacker was exiled to the Northern Frontier, he takes Digit along, and in the Northern Frontier, he forces Digit to create a new ship called the Grim Wreaker while employing two robots Buzz and Delete to do his dirty work for him. However, Digit escapes back to Motherboard after foiling Hacker's plan to shut down the power in the cybersite Valussa, and continues to serve for Motherboard as Dr. Marble's new assistant. Despite Digit's desertion, Hacker still remains to take control of Cyberspace, no matter the cost.
Present[]
Hacker first appeared when he sets a virus to be activated inside an Earth library where three kids named Jackie, Matt and Inez unwittingly activated. With his virus activated, Hacker sends it off to infect Motherboard, hoping it will destroy her. Luckily, Dr. Marbles had already set up the firewall when this happened, and Motherboard is left partially infected while her Encryptor Chip is destroyed.
Because of this event, Motherboard formed a group called the Cybersquad (composed of Digit and the three kids) in their mission to stop Hacker from wreaking havoc in Cyberspace while assigning Dr. Marbles to either find or create a new Encryptor Chip. Many of Hacker's schemes include:
- Kidnapping Dr. Marbles (and sometimes Digit) as a hostage against Motherboard
- Attempting to take over cybersites (such as taking over Radopolis, stealing water from Sensible Flats)
- Attempting to pollute and crash cybersites (such as destroying Symmetria, releasing wasteful cyberstatic, attempting to shatter the skydome protecting Happily Ever After)
- Stealing sources of power to recharge himself (such as the Sunisphere from the cybersite Solaria, the Crystal of Calamore, the energy of Poddleville, the natural ooze from EcoHaven)
- Attempting to steal new installed versions of the Encryptor Chip that could cure Motherboard of the virus
- Attempting to drain Motherboard of her power (such as clogging up her cooling system with hot liquid, kidnapping a slug and forcing it to feed on Motherboard for survival, sending a new virus called a logic buster that would crash her circuitry, sending in a rocket full of magnetite that will erase her memory disks)
- Conning cyberfolks of their valuables for profit (such as creating unfair games in R Fair City, stealing massive land in Sensible Flats, stealing the Eye of Rom from Pyramdia to harness its power)
- Creating a machine called the Transformatron that can allow himself to transform into a powerful cyborg to wreak havoc in cybersites
Despite the complexity of his schemes, Hacker miserably failed on his schemes due to him and his minions underestimating the Cybersquad's intelligence. Even at two occasions when he succeeded in conquering Cyberspace for himself (such as draining Motherboard into a new Encryptor Chip after tricking the Cybersquad into buying the chip at an auction, and inflating himself as a balloon with the help from the Transformatron to invade Control Central), they didn't last for long as the Cybersquad was able to return Cyberspace's control back to Motherboard. Because of his constant failures, Hacker was no longer feared and instead became a laughingstock to all of Cyberspace (both heroes and villains alike), much to his complete anger.
In spite of his feud against the Cybersquad, Hacker was forced to work with them on some occasions. The first time was when he had a fanboy named Ledge who tried to please him by hackerizing Sensible Flats, but failed, and he later tried to go against him. Ledge later planned on stealing the Bluebird of Zappiness, a device that might cure Motherboard of her virus. When Hacker discovered this, he reluctantly teams up with the Cybersquad in order to get the device. He and Inez both shared an equal hatred for Ledge, and would often refer to him as a "dirty rat".
Another time was when the Northern Frontier was being attacked by a new villain known as Zusk, who is chopping down its forest trees. Despite having polluted several natural cybersites, Hacker genuinely cares for the Northern Frontier's forest and its creatures as they provide him solace for all of his failures; the Cybersquad even willingly teams up with Hacker and his henchmen to stop Zusk from cutting down the forest trees, though Zusk escapes.
Personality[]
The Hacker is a vain, uncaring, manipulative and pompous cyborg with a planet-sized ego and a thirst for power and dominance. He desires control of Cyberspace to fuel his narcissism and spread his interpretative beautiful visage. He is very abusive to his henchmen, mostly to Buzz and Delete as he would berate them for whenever things go wrong (even if it's not their fault). While he decided not to fire them again after he temporarily replaced them with Baskerville, he did so under pressure. He is widely hated, but this does not bother him. He does have hidden depths outside of his villainous nature, such as hating pink but loving puce, being pacified when he took up being an artist, a fan of Who Framed Roger Rabbit (a likely reference to his actor), and adores the Prince by Machiavelli. While he started out as a powerful, heartless and diabolical villain, he has lately become a laughing stock, much to his fury.
Appearance[]
The Hacker is a tall, slender, muscular green humanoid and is bald, and sports a black pointy hairdo. His attire consists of black trousers and shoes, a white shirt, and a purple cape with a high collar that is red on the inward facing side. Along with his hulking physique, his pride and joy is his freakishly large, pointy chin.
