~ The Gunslinger about to duel Peter Martin.

~ The Gunslinger after shooting John Blane.

The Gunslinger is a homicidal android who serves as the main antagonist from the 1973 film Westworld. He is a minor character in the 1976 sequel Futureworld.

He is played by the late Yul Brynner who also played Rameses in the 1956 epic The Ten Commandments.

History[]

Westworld[]

In the first film The Gunslinger is depicted as one of the main androids used as attractions in an adult theme park Westworld which is a set that resembles the everyday life in an American wild west town. Other attractions are a Medievalworld and a Romanworld. The gunslinger is programmed to start an argument and then persuade the tourist in fictitious gun draw.

The Gunslinger inevitably looses the match every time because for the safety of the tourists the guns don't work on human beings but just on the androids thus being harmless against the two main characters, Peter Martin and John Blane.

Things change when a virus corrupts the system of Westworld and the surrounding Medieval and Roman Worlds causing some androids to behave differently and actually injuring or killing the tourists. The Gunslinger makes no exception and persuades Blane into another duel which ends up with the Gunslinger being victorious and Blane dying.

The gunslinger chases Martin through WestWorld and the surrounding towns, down the laboratories where the androids are built up until RomanWorld where Martin manages to throw acid on his face so he won't be able to detect his infrared signature. In MedievalWorld, he has been burned alive by Martin, before he manages to get it fried and go offline after he destroys his face.

Futureworld[]

The Gunslinger also makes a cameo appearance in the sequel film Futureworld where he appears in a dream sequence.

Appearance[]

The Gunslinger is depicted as wearing a hat, a dark-blue shirt and jeans. He is armed with two pistols on each side of his hips. He has a very human look, a fierce expression and seems to have a silver looking sparkle in each of his eyes.

Trivia[]

  • The term "gunslinger" was not created until the 1950s, and was not used in the 1800s.
  • The Gunslinger's appearance was inspired by Yul Brynner's portrayal of "Chris Adams" in the film The Magnificent Seven.
  • The character has his own prominent leitmotif on the film's soundtrack, titled eponymously "The Gunslinger".
  • A Gunslinger-inspired robot, named the Gunfighter (played by Alex Kubik), appears in Beyond Westworld.[1]
  • In the HBO TV series, The Gunslinger is shown briefly in the episode "The Adversary", while Bernard Lowe is exploring Sub-Level B82.[2]
  • He shares parallels with several host and human characters in the HBO TV series, notably Hector Escaton (a black-clad feared outlaw, whom the guests can fight), the older William (attire, mannerisms, antagonistic role) and even Dolores (the exact same favoured sidearm, Dolores' steely and ruthless resolve while under the influence of the Wyatt persona).
  • According to John Carpenter, he based Michael Myers from the Halloween franchise off of this character. On that note; Arnold Schwarzenegger said that he based his character from The Terminator from him.
