Villain Overview

My name is not important; what is important is what I'm going to do. I just fucking hate this world, and the human worms feasting on its carcass. My whole life is just cold, bitter hatred, and I always wanted to die violently. This is the time of vengeance, and no life is worth saving, and I will put in the grave as many as I can. It's time for me to kill and it's time for me to die; my genocide crusade begins... here!
~ Not Important's famous speech at the beginning.
I never thought it would be so easy to slaughter my whole neighborhood. I can feel their pain, their suffering flowing through my veins. It's like the most intense drug and I need more... MUCH MORE! (hearing blaring sirens from distance) Heh, the "human shields" have arrived. I'll hide and prepare an ambush. It's time to shoot some canned meat, ha ha ha!
~ Not Important after devastated his own entire neighborhood before ambushing a SWAT team at the sewers.

The Antagonist, better known as Not Important, is the main protagonist of the 2015 video game Hatred.

Because of his hatred against humanity, Not Important decides to kill as many people as he possibly can and hopes to have the most violent death. The isometric shooter has been controversially received by critics and players alike largely due to Not Important's misanthropic tendencies and willingness to violently murder civilians and policemen.

He is voiced by Tom Clarke Hill, credited as "Clint Westwood" in the game, who also voiced Cortez in TimeSplitters: Future Perfect.

Biography[]

Background[]

Nothing much is known about Not Important's backstory, nor how he came to be a terrorist, Although he mentioned that his whole life is just "cold and bitter hatred" and it is known that Not Important is a misanthropic insane killer who shows no remorse for his victims nor the ones he killed. He describes his murders as being part of a "genocide crusade" to eradicate all human life from the city of New York.

Campaign Against Humanity[]

After killing a drugged hostage in his basement, Not Important leaves home and begins to kill every civilian he comes across. After his initial rampage, he enters a police station at One Police Plaza district to murder all remaining police officers before entering the sewers to brutally kill a team of S.W.A.T. officers.

Having escaped a retaliating hipster by hijacking a train, Not Important discovers that there is a nuclear power plant in New Jersey and begins to plan on destroying the facility. After slaughtering everyone in the train, Not Important steals an armed S.W.A.T. van and massacres Triad gangsters and civilians in Chinatown, leaving a massive trail of destruction and death behind him. With the military in pursuit, Not Important finds a politician named José Morales gathering his supporters while doing a speech, He murders Morales and all of his supporters who attended the speech, before raiding Fort O'conor to obtain C4 explosives. After overwhelming the military, Not Important declares himself a "One Man Army" before leaving the fort.

Death[]

He storms the nuclear power plant, places C4 charges in the facility, and tries to coerce an engineer into overloading the reactor (which would erase the city from the earth). Frustrated in the engineer's reluctance, he murders the engineer and types in the code, 666, to overload the reactor. A group of soldiers arrive and he laughs maniacally as he is shot down. With his last bit of strength, he states that he wonders if his explosives will work, then activates the trigger that completely destroys New York City. After realizing the city is destroyed, he posthumously mutters "Well, they did.".

Legacy[]

The game's Survival Mode revealed that Not Important's path of destruction inspired three individuals who subsequently continued genocidal spree against humanity: the sadistic outcast Widowmaker, the rejected former criminal Recidivist, and Psychocop, the disillusioned scarred survivor of Not Important's massacre at the police station in One Police Plaza district. As Not Important is about to blow up a nuclear power plant, the three started their own rampage before meeting their own demise.

Personality[]

Let me introduce myself: I'm a man of hate and disgust.
~ Not Important, talking about his personality after executing one of his victims.

Not Important is a misanthropic destroyer who will stop at nothing to lead a one-man war against New York City. He is utterly contemptuous and sardonic for humanity, meaning that he is more than happy to execute anyone who stands in his path regardless of race, gender, or sexuality. He is shown to be sadistic, remarking that his victims don't deserve natural deaths, that he sometimes feels he kills them too fast, and that the thrill of slaughtering his neighborhood felt like "the most intense drug". He shows a distinct disgust for politics and politicians. Despite his utter contempt for humanity and believing that they deserve violent deaths, he seems to be well-aware that he himself is a horrible person, referring to himself in a trailer as a "ruthless, remorseless genocide machine". He also seems to be mentally unstable, given his misanthropic tendencies and maniacal laughter near the end of the video game.

Villainous Acts[]

  • He kidnapped someone, tortured then ended the life of his victim.
  • He committed numerous brutal murders throughout the game, aiming at cops as well as unarmed civilians, for the sake of "purification". He usually killed his victims through firearms, but sometimes executed them more violently via slashing their throats or crushing their heads with his boots or the butt of his firearm.
  • He slaughtered everyone in a train, then diverted said train after murdering its driver.
  • He invaded and completely wrecked numerous buildings and public places, including a park, police station full of survivors of his rampage and a nuclear facility.
  • He melted a nuclear reactor within New York, causing the nuclear facility to explode, thus erasing New York City and its inhabitants from the map (> 8 million victims).

Quotes[]

Part 1[]

Nothing can stop my Hatred, you cannot kill what breeds within you. Nothing can stop me; a fearless remorseless genocide machine, cold and deliberate. They will send many to fight me, but all their efforts are f***ing pathetic. All those poor bastards sacrificing their lives in the name of duty, to protect the innocent and the weak. I call them "Human Shields".
~ Not Important, describing his enemies (the Police, SWAT and Military) in the Human Shields trailer.
Human scum; they've always felt so f***ing safe inside their homes. Surrounded by the possessions gathered their whole lives. So weak, so fragile, they don't deserve a natural death unconsciously waiting to be obliterated by my Hatred! Those parasites think their walls can save them, but I will destroy everything they own and everything they are.
~ Not Important revealing his intent to cause mass amounts of property damage to New York City in the Devastation trailer.

"Human shields" can't stop me! F***ing cans!
~ Not Important
Time to leave this place. I can smell some innocent blood. It always tastes better.
~ Not Important leaving devastated Mariana for a nearby train.
This train is going to be a big, iron coffin. For all of you. (looking at the train's route) Hmm, where are we heading? (delighted) The next station is near a nuclear power plant... That gives me an idea. Looks like a good opportunity for heavy casualties among this pathetic population. Finally — my journey has a target. But first, I'm gonna cleanse this place of these f***ing worthless maggots.
~ Not Important formulating his would-be epic climax of his bloody quest before massacring an entire train.
Now down the railway. Something is telling me, at the next station there's a nice bloodbath. I mean, there WILL be.
~ Not Important leaving devastated truck stop for the train station with a stolen SWAT Truck.
Here comes the bloodshed! Time for an iron doom with a high-cal machinegun. They're going to bleed for me, profusely.

~ Not Important's train station kill.
Soldiers... Time to get my shit together.
~ Not Important upon seeing the first wave of National Guard soldiers at the train station.

Part 3[]

Ach, they're beginning to weaken. Sending an army to fight me. Ha ha, good! More corpses! Time to head downtown. Soil is hungry... And soil is also thirsty.
~ Not Important after slaughtering an entire train station and reflecting on first wave of National Guard soldiers sent against him.
I f***ing hate politics. But more than that... I hate politicians. And all the scum so easily fed by their lies. But what a lovely crowd of soon-to-be-corpses.
~ Not Important about to take his time massacring Downtown's new mayor and his supporters.
One nation under death. I AM GENOCIDE! But enough fun, I must get to the power plant. First, I need some high-explosives. There is an army base nearby. Time to pay them a painful visit.
~ Not Important about to go to army base for explosives.
Let's see if those "human shields" are able to protect themselves on their own ground.
~ Not Important begins his attack on the army base.
(as he takes two C4s after kicking the box open)Two charges should be enough to blow up those f***ing parasites. (leaving army base's storage) Now let's go back.
~ Not Important steals two C4s.
One man conquering an army base. Nothing compares to this feeling, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! (turning on the power plant far ahead) The power plant nearby, built for their comfort and prosperity. Haha, now it will become their doom! A much better use of it.
~ Not Important about to return to his original destination.
Ach, the welcome committee... Time to die!
~ Not Important begins the fight against nuclear power plant security.
Enough playing outside, time to complete my... mission.
~ Not Important about to unleash hell upon nuclear power plant staff.
Two nuclear cores - Two C-4 explosives.
~ Not Important placing a C4 on one of reactors.
Alright, in case it doesn't, I'll have to try to overload these cores from the control room.
~ Not Important setting out for the control room to overload the reactors.
Not Important: How do I overload the reactors?!
Unnamed Operator: What? No, NEVER! It will cause a massive explosion! Are you insane?!
Not Important: That's what I want and you will tell me, or I'll make you die very. F***ing. Slowly... (
grabs the unnamed operator and painfully carves his head with his knife)
Unnamed Operator: AAAARGH, ALRIGHT! Alright, please stop! I will do this! I will do this! No, I won't do that! I can't be responsible for this. Kill me if you-
Not Important: (
jabs his knife against the unnamed operator's brain) Useless piece of shit. What is this f***ing code? (inputs 666 on Password and presses Login)
~ Not Important coerces the unnamed operator to overload the reactor for his behalf, only to do it himself after killing him.
Soldier # 1: (barges in along with his friends and aims their guns on him) He's here!
Not Important: So... the time has come. (
laughs maniacally) I only wonder if those explosives will work. (shift to the city as the power plant bursts into a massive, mushroom cloud-shaped explosion) Well, they did.
~ Not Important's last moments and success in death.

Trivia[]

  • He possesses the paranormal capacity to regenerate health after each murder. This, along with the Steam Trading Cards, has caused players to speculate that he might be an incarnation of death.
  • Prior to the revelation that Tom Clarke Hill provided Not Important's voice, it was long speculated and rumored that his voice was provided by veteran voice actor Jon St. John, popular for providing the voice of Duke Nukem and Big the Cat.[1]
  • Not Important was originally going to be an unnamed protagonist. However, his creator Destructive Creations have since called him "Not Important" after the name became popular among fan circles.
  • Due to Not Important's cruelty and savagery in the game, Hatred was originally removed from Steam Greenlight after the trailer's controversial reception. After backlash from users on censorship, Gabe Newell emailed an apology to Destructive Creations regarding this and placed the game back on Steam. The game has since become a best seller upon its launch on Steam.
    • This is also ironic, as The Crusader exists solely for shock value, and its never explained how The Crusader went on a genocidal crusade due to the plot being too generic along with his past being virtually nonexistent.
  • It is heavily theorized by many fans that Not Important is a former military veteran who lost his mind due to suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder after surviving numerous warzones. Evidence of this is his typical attire, his exceptional strength and durability which could very well be the result of military training, and his knowledge of how to use military weapons and vehicles. Although this is plausible, it is currently just speculation and should not be taken as canon. Though given his lack of a proper backstory, it still remains a mystery.
  • Strangely enough, he is referred to as "The Hero" by the game's developers, and in the internal game files.
  • Not Important appears as a guest character in POSTAL Redux, unlockable via cheat code.
