The Black Mass is the overarching antagonist of the Cartoon Network animated series Samurai Jack. It is a living, non-sapient amoebic mass of pure evil that terrorized the universe for millions of years, as well as the progenitor of Aku. It appears in episode "The Birth of Evil: Part 1".

Biography[]

Long ago in the depths of space, a vast, formless, non-sentient mass of pure evil incarnate appeared in an explosion. This black mass was attacked and vanquished by the three mighty gods: Odin, Ra, and Rama, in order to protect the universe from its influence. During the turmoil of the battle a small shard of the great entity was severed and managed to survive. It drifted off into space, unnoticed by the gods who were still engaged in combat. For many eons this shard continued tumbling through space until it eventually landed on Earth.

Legacy[]

The subsequent impact is believed to have triggered the extinction of the dinosaurs. Aku eventually emerges from the impact site, manifesting as a black pool before acquiring a grotesque humanoid form capable of thought and speech. Despite the efforts of Jack's father, Aku, using evil magic, eventually manages to conquer the world.

Samurai Jack himself carried on the fight, engaging Aku in a seemingly endless war and, using his divine sword, managed to reduce Aku several times. However, each time, Aku managed to escape and regenerate himself.

Fifty years later, it is also shown that Aku donated a small portion of himself to the Cult of Aku after seeing the statue they built in his likeness. Afterwards, the cult leader drank the potion which somehow impregnated her, creating the Daughters of Aku.

Eventually, Jack returns to the past and manages to kill Aku and destroy the last remnant of the Black Mass forever. However, this comes at a sad price as Ashi starts to fade from existence since she was created from the Black Mass, much to Jack's dismay and misery, though his subsequent encounter with the string of fate suggests that he will eventually find happiness anyway as no traces of the Black Mass exist anymore.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Indestructibility: No mortal weapon could harm the Black Mass, as its power extended far beyond the mortal realm. It took the weapons of divine beings in order to destroy it.
  • Darkness Strike: The Black Mass could launch spikes from itself strong enough to nearly kill Rama and Ra.
  • Shapeshifting: The Mass can takes on several forms while in motion and while in its battle with the gods, as seen when it created itself as a massive crab-looking form with massive pincers. It creates temporary appendages as necessary.
  • Immense Size: The Mass is the size of a planetary body, dwarfing the Gods who arrived to battle it.
  • Immense Speed: Despite it's vast size, the Black Mass was capable of easily flying away from the trio of gods at great speed, even being ahead of them for some moments until they struck it down with their weapons.
