The Alliance (Doctor Who)

The Alliance is a group of various alien races who are enemies of the Doctor's and the main antagonists of Series 5 of Doctor Who, appearing in the "The Pandorica Opens"/"The Big Bang" two-part finale.

History[]

The Alliance was formed in response to rumors that the Doctor was responsible for the cracks in time, which in reality were caused by the Silence destroying his TARDIS. Nevertheless, the Alliance sought to avert the Cracks in Time being created by sealing the Doctor inside the Pandorica, a cube-like device specially made to contain him.

On the night in 2010 Amy Pond left with the Eleventh Doctor, members of the Alliance visited her house in order to sample her memories and create a scenario to lure the Doctor into a trap. The Alliance selected Stonehenge in the year 102 AD as the location for the Pandorica, based on a picture book Amy owned, and named the Pandorica after Pandora's Box. As part of the trap, the Nestene Consciousness created Autons disguised as a small legion of Roman soldiers who were also featured in the picture book, with a copy of Rory Williams being placed among them.

Once the Doctor arrived at Stonehenge, the forces of the Alliance converged above it, but the Doctor was able to keep them at bay for an hour by extending the Pandorica's force-field technology around Stonehenge. As soon as the Pandorica reached the moment when it would open, a high-pitch signal went out to the Auton copies and activated the hidden programming the Nestene had placed inside of them. At the moment the Pandorica opened, the Alliance entered Stonehenge to trap the Doctor inside of it and revealed that they blamed him for the cracks. Despite the Doctor's pleas that someone else was responsible, the Alliance did not listen and locked him inside.

At that same moment however, the Doctor's TARDIS was hijacked by the Silence and destroyed, creating the cracks in time. However, after escaping the Pandorica, the Doctor took control of the Pandorica and steered it into the TARDIS explosion, creating a second Big Bang that "reset" the universe and stopped the cracks from forming. Because the Pandorica was used to save the universe, the Alliance technically did succeed. Because the cracks never existed, the Alliance was never formed.
