The Oracle may have yet spoken truth. The Marked Warrior shall bring about the destruction of Olympus. Ares chose poorly that day. He took your brother when it should have been you! None of that matters now. Nothing you do is of your own choosing!
~ Thanatos to Kratos.

Thanatos, the God of Death is a major antagonist in the God of War video game series, serving as the main antagonist in God of War: Ghost of Sparta. He is an ancient deity who presides over the realm of death, birthing Erinys and commanding the formidable Domain of Death, a realm shrouded in such trepidation that neither mortals nor deities dared to venture within its harrowing depths.

Though predating the very existence of the Olympian pantheon, Thanatos, altruistically, aided their cause by confining the indomitable Deimos, for the gods harbored the belief that this warrior held the ominous destiny of orchestrating the downfall of Olympus. The captivity of Deimos endured until the arrival of Kratos, who valiantly sought to liberate his sibling from the clutches of death's unyielding grip.

He was voiced by Arthur Burghardt, who also voiced Destro, Devastator, and Mannoroth.

Appearance[]

With an aura that personifies death, Thanatos possesses a countenance that evokes a sense of foreboding. When he takes on a human guise, he assumes the stature of a tall and robust figure, his pallid grayish complexion contrasting sharply with his long, ebony locks and colorless eyes. His hands, disproportionately large in relation to his frame, sport claw-like fingers, mirroring the barefootedness of his daughter. In a manner akin to hers, he possesses the ability to sprout raven-esque wings from his back. Adorned in a tattered black robe, Thanatos accentuates his left biceps with a golden bracelet, rarely parting ways with his trusty blade. In his alternate form, he metamorphoses into a colossal, dragon-like creature, adorned with horns and raven wings, its armored skin boasting a hue akin to steel-gray.

Personality[]

Thanatos appears to possess a profound dissociative nature, finding solace within his own domain and displaying minimal interest in the affairs of fellow deities. Moreover, he exhibits a disquieting inclination towards cruelty and sadism, deriving pleasure from subjecting Deimos to physical and psychological torment.

Nevertheless, Thanatos cannot be entirely vilified, for his affection for his daughter Erynis knows no bounds. A consuming fury engulfs him upon witnessing Kratos' slaying of her, compelling him to seek retribution by attempting to extinguish his own brother Deimos, thus inflicting untold anguish upon Kratos. Prior to this climactic event, Thanatos seizes control of a lifeless vessel, employing it as a conduit to impart a cautionary message to Kratos, subtly showing his preference for upholding the existing order rather than openly provoking conflict.

In his divine existence predating the esteemed Olympian deities, Thanatos gazes down upon them with disdain, lacking any reverence. He openly ridicules Ares for selecting the incorrect chosen one, and his audacity extends to exhibiting no apprehension towards the potential downfall of Olympus. Instead, his trepidation lies solely in the intrusion upon his domain, perceiving it as a direct challenge to his dominion. His haughty conviction of invincibility ultimately becomes his demise, for it blinds him to the true magnitude of the threat that Kratos embodies. Even upon the precipice of his demise, Thanatos displays no fear, solely tormenting Kratos until his final breath.

Biography[]

Past[]

Thanatos was a god who existed even before the Olympians. He lived during the times of the Primordial entities such as Gaia and Ouranos.

When Deimos, Kratos' brother was brought to the god of death by Ares, Thanatos became the jailer and torturer of Deimos, who was believed to be a warrior prophesized to destroy the Olympians. For many years, Thanatos tormented and tortured Deimos until he became psychotic and hateful of his brother.

God of War: Ghost of Sparta[]

Doman

The Domain of Death

As Kratos began searching for Deimos, he eventually found out he was imprisoned in the Domain of Death, Thanatos' realm. Thanatos' daughter, Erinys, killed a number of Spartans as a warning to Kratos to stop his journey.

However, when she confronted him personally, she was killed. At one point, Thanatos took over a dead body and warned Kratos not to continue on his quest, taunting him and increasing his anger.

Kratos finally entered the Domain of Death where Thanatos tried to make him turn back numerous times. After the Ghost of Sparta found Deimos, only to be attacked by him, Thanatos showed up as Kratos was beaten down by his brother. The death god grabbed Deimos, reminding Kratos that he’d suffer for having killed his daughter.

Thantos flew off with Deimos, bringing him to the Suicide Bluffs with the Ghost of Sparta in hot pursuit. Deimos managed to free himself from the death god’s grasp and fought him, only to be knocked off the edge of the cliff. Kratos managed to save his brother and the two reconciled before going to take on Thanatos.

Thanatos saying Ares should've taken Kratos.

They reached the place where he was waiting and he remarked on the prophecy of the "marked one" bringing about Olympus' destruction and noted that it may have been true. Thanatos amusedly stated that Ares had taken the wrong one on the day he'd taken Deimos, as it should've been Kratos. However, the two ignored his taunts and engaged Thanatos, who eventually grabbed Kratos. Deimos saved his brother only to be knocked into some rocks and killed after being crushed by the god.

Enraged, Kratos unleashed the full power of Thera's Bane, managing to destroy the armor of Thanatos' monstrous form and badly wounding him. The death god transformed back into his humanoid form and mocked Kratos who proceeded to beat him down in retaliation before he easily stabbed him, tossing him into some rocks.

However, Thanatos continued to taunt the Ghost of Sparta with a smile, as the latter drove his hands into the death god's damaged chest, opening it up even more and driving his fire charged blades into his chest before Thanatos finally died, exploding in a blast of ash and light.

Powers and Abilities[]

As an entity of antiquity, surpassing even the Olympians themselves, and with the ominous truth that only a scarce few amongst the gods and mortals who dare venture into his realm ever return, Thanatos stands as an indomitable force. Not even the venerable Sisters of Fate hold dominion over him, suggesting that he may perhaps occupy a stratum equal to, if not surpassing, the esteemed sisters.

Thanatos is immortal with superhuman strength, speed, and the power to shape-shift. In battle, he wields a large sword that he is highly skilled with and has a large pair of wings that allow him to fly. Thanatos can also transform into a huge monster-like form with extremely strong armor-like skin and can unleash a powerful energy blast from his mouth. He can also possess corpses and speak through them.

Trivia[]

  • In Greek mythology, Thanatos is the child of Erebus and Nyx, same as Charon. Also, Thanatos had no children and the Erinys was another name for the Furies.
  • In the Rage of Sparta soundtrack, Thanatos' name is chanted again and again by the choir.
  • His head when he transforms into his monster form resembles the Skull of Keres, the key to the Domain of Death.
  • Thanatos is the only final boss in the God of War games that is not directly related to Kratos.
  • His eyes are completly pale in the games' cutscenes, but in gameplay, they aren't.
  • In God of War III, when Kratos confronts Zeus, he declared that "the hands of death could not defeat [him]," a possible reference to Thanatos.
  • At the forefront of the series, Thanatos emerges as the first character to mentioning the Sisters of Fate and audaciously plotting to challenge their divine authority. He boldly asserts to Kratos that not even the omnipotent Fates can impede his impending demise, an assertion that portends the climactic finale of the epic game.
