~ Steve Coyne to Vito.

Stephen "Steve" Coyne is a supporting antagonist in the 2010 video game Mafia II. He is the right-hand man of Derek Pappalardo, mostly doing his dirty work for him.

Biography[]

Vito Scaletta first meets Steve and Derek in 1945 when turning up at the docks looking for honest work. Derek orders Steve to show Vito around and give him labor to do. When Vito refuses to do backbreaking work, Steve orders him to leave. But when finding out Vito is involved with Joe Barbaro, he changes his mind and invites Derek back to the office. After confirming his story, Derek gives Vito more "reasonable" employment, which involves extorting money out of the dock workers to pay barbers fees, regardless if they got a haircut or not. During these interactions both men are aware that Vito's father once worked for them.

When Vito is released from prison in 1951 he returns to the dock to see Derek, only to find Steve there. Steve says Derek is away, although urges Vito to come back later if he needs anymore work.

A few days later Steve goes into alliance with Clemente crime family Underboss Eddie Scarpa to take down the greasers, who had torched a truck containing stolen cigarettes run by the Clemente family as part of a money making scheme. Steve agrees to work with the Clemente family, as the greasers had robbed his cousin sometime before and injured them. They destroy the greasers bar, before then heading to their hangout at an old foundry and wiping the lot out.

A few months later Vito turns up at the docks looking for work due to needing to pay off a debt. Steve and Derek enlist Vito's help to stop the dock workers from striking due to one of them being unfairly fired. Vito is willing to go along with the scheme, but upon finding out from the workers that Steve had Vito's father murdered on the orders of Derek, Vito turns on the two men. Vito wipes out the mobsters at the dock before then killing both Steve and Derek, avenging his father's death.

Trivia[]

  • Originally the player were able to do optional side missions for Steve and Derek by visiting the docks, but this was cut from the final game.
  • The player can avoid killing Derek and Steve by making enough money to pay the loan shark back, meaning they can avoid having to go to the dock. But Steve and Derek's deaths are still canonical as it is reported on the radio later on regardless.
