I have everything. Everything I need. Every love satisfied. But it's not enough.
~ Simon Adebisi
What can I say? I'm a bad heart motherf***er.
~ Simon Adebisi

Simon Adebisi is a notorious prisoner and an antagonist in the TV series Oz. He was the leader of the Homeboys gang. He was the main antagonist of the first half of Season 4.

He was portrayed by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, who also played Lock-Nah in The Mummy Returns, Nykwana Wombosi in Bourne Identity, Mr. Eko in Lost, Kurse in Thor: The Dark World, Malko in Game of Thrones, Killer Croc in Suicide Squad, and Vervain in Watership Down.

Biography[]

Simon Adebisi is serving a life sentence without parole for beheading an undercover cop with a machete. An extremely muscular man, he can physically intimidate many of his fellow inmates. As one of the leaders of the Homeboys, Adebisi is considered one of the prison's most dangerous inmates, and becomes one of the most recognizable characters on the show. He is well known for his trademark tilted hat, which Akinnuoye-Agbaje suggested was inspired by the "Area Boys" of Lagos, Nigeria.

Adebisi is of Nigerian, specifically Yurubura descent, and speaks with a strong accent, However, he has been an American citizen for about 15 years prior to his incarceration. Despite being portrayed as short-tempered and hedonistic, Adebisi later is shown to be capable of engineering and executing long-term plans through intellect and manipulation.

Season 1[]

Adebisi began as a minor character, a lieutenant of Jefferson Keane. Following Keane's execution in Episode 4, Paul Markstrom takes over the Homeboys until Adebisi and Kenny Wangler kill him when it is discovered he is an undercover cop. Adebisi then takes over and partners in the drug trade with the Italians. Italian Mob boss Nino Schibetta sees him as the best drug player among the black inmates and respects his leadership skills. Unbeknownst to Schibetta, Adebisi and Ryan O'Reily intend to take over the drug trade and begin putting crushed glass into Schibetta's food, which slowly kills him. In the Season 1 finale, Adebisi, along with O'Reily, Kareem Said, Miguel Alvarez and Scott Ross, is a leader of a riot in their prison unit (known as "Emerald City"). He is taken prisoner by the other inmates, however, when he is incapacitated due to heroin withdrawal. Adebisi is then placed in solitary confinement after the riot.

Season 2[]

Adebisi is hospitalised after suffering a breakdown while in solitary due to his heroin withdrawal symptoms continuing. However, he still manages to maintain control of the Homeboys when Em City is re-opened.

Nino Schibetta's son Peter arrives in Oz, and discovers that Adebisi killed his father. Enlisting the help of Chucky Pancamo, he attempts to kill Adebisi, but Adebisi easily beats the two of them down with a heavy kitchen tool and a can of peaches. He then rapes the semi-conscious Schibetta, causing him to lose his mind and be transferred to a psych ward.

However, Adebisi is distracted from continuing his fight against the Italian mob by two factors: his crush on Shirley Bellinger, a death row inmate who dumps him upon finding out that he's black, and his heroin addiction, which drives him into a further downward spiral. The latter is capitalized on by the Italians, who have Antonio Nappa utilize his staff connections to have Adebisi sent to rehab.

In rehab, Adebisi is helped through his addiction by Kipekemie Jara. However, the new leader of the Homeboys, not wanting Adebisi to recover, orders Wangler to kill Jara. Wangler murders Jara in front of Adebisi, who has a nervous breakdown and is institutionalised, inhabiting the cell next to Peter Schibetta.

Season 3[]

In order to get out of the psych ward, Adebisi intervenes when he sees Schibetta being attacked by another patient, presenting himself as a changed man and leading to him being returned to Em City, where he takes a job in the AIDS unit. This allows him to obtain an infected blood sample, which he then uses to infect Nappa, causing him to be sent to the AIDS unit, where he is murdered.

Adebisi approaches Pancamo, who agrees to partner with him in the drug trade if he kills Wangler, who is now leading the Homeboys. Adebisi issues a declaration of war against Wangler by burning the skin of two Homeboys, then brutalizes Wangler in his cell, hog ties him in a humiliating position and apparently rapes him, before forcing him to accuse Unit Manager Tim McManus of sexual harassment in the hopes of getting him sacked.

Adebisi begins planning to make Oz all black, starting by manipulating corrections officer Clayton Hughes into being sympathetic to his cause. He then arranges for African-American inmate Augustus Hill to get himself thrown in the hole, allowing him to incite the black prisoners to riot by claiming it was racially motivated. As a result, Oz is put into lockdown, and Hughes is sacked. Before leaving, Hughes gives Adebisi a gun.

Season 4[]

After the lockdown ends, Adebisi sees French inmate Guillaume Tarrant being bullied by Wangler and, sensing a way to avenge Jara's death without getting his hands dirty, gives Tarrant Hughes's gun. The next time Wangler starts harassing Tarrant, he guns Wangler down and goes on a shooting spree during which he kills two other black inmates, a corrections officer, and then himself.

With four blacks dead at a white prisoner's hands, Adebisi is able to convince the prison authorities of violent racial tensions within Em City, and McManus is sacked for failing to prevent the shooting.

Raoul Hernandez informs Warden Leo Glynn that Adebisi was responsible for the shooting in order to stoke racial tensions; Adebisi retaliates by having Enrique Morales arrange Hernandez's murder.

Over the course of the season Adebisi is able to persuade outside community leaders to pressure Glynn into hiring a black man to replace McManus. Glynn capitulates, as he thinks it will win him votes with the African-American community in the upcoming election, appointing Martin Querns with the intention of ridding Oz of racial tensions. However, Querns sets up a system to prevent this by giving Adebisi the power to do whatever he wants if it will prevent further violence. He also transfers all the white guards except Claire Howell to different parts of the prison. This system results in Adebisi becoming the most powerful man in Em City.

Kareem Said and Aryan Brotherhood leader Vernon Schillinger become greatly concerned about Adebisi's power, Said believing that it will lead to further violence whilst Schillinger believes that Adebisi is turning Oz into a "black ghetto". In order to stop Adebisi, Said moves into his cell and secretly records his drug parties, the intention being to expose the system's corruption to Glynn and have it shut down.

Despite Adebisi's attempts to stop him, Said manages to get the tape to Glynn, who sacks Querns, reinstates McManus, and arranges for Adebisi to be transferred. Enraged, Adebisi attacks Said with a knife, intent on killing him, and a struggle starts. Adebisi emerges from his cell, apparently victorious, before revealing his fatal injuries by spitting up blood and falling to the floor. Said comes out behind him with the bloody knife in hand, having killed Adebisi in self-defense.

Personality[]

Adebisi is a sadistic, violent thug who hedonistically exploits his imprisonment to indulge in his every whim. Adebisi has a particular love of murder and rape; he frequently uses the latter as a domination tactic against his rivals as well. Adebisi is an avowed heroin addict as well, frequently indulging in the same drugs he sells to his fellow prisoners. Adebisi's hedonism extends to more benign acts, such as his penchant for eating sweet fruits such as oranges or bananas whenever he can, or frequently listening to music on a contraband CD player.

In spite of his violent personality, Adebisi is often jovial and laid-back. He often spends his downtime chatting with his fellow Homeboys or his frenemy O'Reily. However, Adebisi's brutish persona masks his true cunning. Adebisi is extremely good at manipulating people, often by mimicking his fellow inmates's political beliefs and ambitions. Adebisi similarly has a talent of corrupting those around him, even those supposedly on the side of the law; Adebisi's abuse leads to undercover cop Johnny Basil snapping and embracing his identity as a prisoner, while his spouting of black nationalist principles leads to Clayton Hughes becoming loyal to him and falling into radicalism.

While Adebisi frequently treats those around him with contempt, he holds certain people in high regard and views them as genuine friends. Adebisi is deeply loyal to Kipekemie Jarra, viewing him as a father figure and nearly reforming due to his influence. When Jarra is killed, Adebisi goes to great lengths to avenge him. Adebisi also respects towards his rival Kareem Saïd. While Adebisi is disdainful of the black nationalism that Saïd champions, he deeply admires Saïd's bravery and intelligence, even trying to convince him to join forces with him upon taking over Em City.

Beneath the surface, Adebisi struggles with deep-rooted self-loathing and suicidal ideation. He struggles with his increasing disconnect with his Yoruban heritage and hatred of how miserable his life in America has become. Kipekemie Jarra implies that Adebisi's current personality is the result of him having snapped due to the racism he experienced and decided to embrace being what white Americans expected of him. Even after taking over Em City, Adebisi privately admits to Saïd that even though he has everything he ever wanted, he is still unable to take any joy from his new position. It is heavily implied that Adebisi allowed Saïd to kill him, as a means of ending his life on his own terms.
