The Sharks are the main antagonists of the 2003 low budget horror film Open Water and its 2016 third installment Open Water 3: Cage Dive.

Biography[]

Open Water[]

Susan and Daniel take a flight to Mexico for a vacation. They spent time together there and walked along the beach. The next day, they joined in a diving group on a boat. When they're at sea they gear in their diving suits and Susan, Daniel, and their diving group dived into the water and swam around. Later, the divers began heading back to the boat as their diver guide tally marks on a piece of paper counting every diver that gets on the boat. When Davis thought they got all 20 divers they close up the boat and drove off leaving Susan and Daniel behind. Susan and Daniel swam up to surface and found out that the boat is driving away.

While still being stranded in the ocean they notice a shark fin poking out the water. They then dip their heads down in the water to look at the shark and sees the shark swimming away. At 1:30 P.M. Susan had a painful feeling in her leg like something bit her as Daniel puts on his mask and dips his face in the water to check on her. Frightened by their injuries they swam away and notice a boat from a distance and they try to use they masks and attempt to reflect the sun to shine to get the boats attention until it got them nowhere.

At 4:40 pm Susan was lying down as back sleeping on the water while 2 sharks were circling her. She yells for Daniel and finds him sleeping a short distance away from her. When they finally got back together Susan felt that something as tapping her leg and Daniel finds bite marks on her leg and thinks that she was sleeping while rubbing up against his knife holder. They then see a shark fin poking out. Susan nervously panics as Daniel puts back on his mask dips his into the water and sees one of the shark's up close as it frightens Daniel.

Daniel screams in anger as he sarcastically rants on how they payed them to get stranded in the middle of the ocean. Susan and Daniel argues back and forth on how they got their plans ruined being stranded in the ocean. Soon afterwards, wave for help to another boat until it got them nowhere again. At 6:45 pm they swam until a shark bit Daniel as he bleeds out. Susan checks on his leg and finds small bite mark on his leg, Susan then covers it up with a buckle strap to prevent it him from losing to much blood.

On a dark stormy night, Susan and Daniel panic as a shark begins circling around them. The next day, meanwhile Davis checks the boat and finds their bag and check their licenses and runs off and hotel employee knocks on their hotel room door and finds them missing. Search helicopters and search boats began looking for the couple. Meanwhile, Susan helds onto Daniel's body and throws his corpse out as a shark begins feasting on his corpse. Susan then gets surrounded by a group of sharks. Susan then takes off her diving equipment and commits suicide by having the sharks devour her as she plunges herself into the water to get eaten.

Open Water 3: Cage Dive[]

A diver named Mark dives into the ocean and films himself swimming around the ocean until he finds a video camera left in the ocean. Camera footage was shown that was taken in 2015 that was left at the bottom of the ocean. The footage starts off and took place on October 21st, 2015. News footage plays on 3 people from California that went missing during their cage dive when a massive flips over the boat washing overboard into shark invested waters but without protection of a cage.

One week later, a diver named Mark tells the story in an interview on how he found the video camera in the water and explains that he opened the camera and found a memory card and puts into his computer and looked into the footage. The footage plays and was recorded on October 17th, 2015 in Laguna Beach, California at 2:15pm. Josh, Jeff , and Megan records them selves excited for their cage diving trip at Sydney, Australia. They then watched footage of people cage diving in shark invested waters on YouTube. The footage cuts to them diving to an airport and grabbed their luggage 3 days before they cage dived.

Megan records them at Sydney Australia and films Josh and Jeff meeting their cousin Greg before they've went on a boat and cruised around the ocean. Megan then records Jeff, Greg, and Josh diving off their sail boat together. Until Megan swims back to the boat thinking there's sharks around her and when she got on the boat it was revealed to be whales as Megan recorded them. On October 19th, 2015 at 10:40 P.M. Jeff was recording himself in a room talking about his plan to propose to Megan as he shows the wedding ring to the camera. Megan knocks on the door as Jeff covers the camera with a towel and answers the door. Megan tells Jeff that his mom was on phone and needed to talk to him before enters the room and sits down onto the bed. Josh secretly enters the room and makes out with Megan. Josh leaves the room and Jeff enters on the phone with his mother. Jeff's mother tells him on the phone that she is not sure about them cage diving. Jeff ensures his Mother's that they'll be fine and that he'll call her back when they back from cage diving.

On October 20th 2015 at 7:50 A.M, 1 Day before cage dive Jeff, Megan, and Josh take a flight to Adelaide Australia. At 2:30 P.M. they go to Port Lincoln Hotel. Later, Jeff wakes up Josh and looks back at the footage of Jeff's planned propose as Josh holds Jedd back from seeing the part where him and Megan kiss. On October 21st, 2015, The day of the cage dive began. They take a cab and went on a boat with their cage diving group. When they got in the driving cage Josh records themselves in the cage while 3 great whites swam around them. Then their cage was being pulled up a massive wave hits the boat causing it to sink. Jeff, Josh, and Megan were left out in the ocean along with a woman holding a corpse of a man with blood coming out of it. They notice a Great white shark and saw another one devouring the woman and the dead man. They yelled for help before they found a man in the distance Josh plunges his head into the water along with the camera and finds 2 great white sharks close to the man. One of the sharks devours the man alive.

On October 21st, 2015 at 1:32 P.M., Megan felt pain into her leg as Josh plunges his head down into the water to check on her leg and finds her a bite mark on her leg. They then find a boat into the distance as they yelled to get the boats attention. Later, Megan's screamed and panicked that something touched her leg which turned out to be a bloodied piece of fish. Megan throws it and Great white shark jumps out and eats it as they scream in fear. They then spot a life vest and held onto it for safety. 5 hours after capsize, Jeff, Megan, and Josh notice a boat from a distance. Jeff swims over to the boat puts on his goggles insisted that he'll make it to the boat. Megan and Josh notices a shark swimming towards were Jeff was, the shark then devours onto something and Jeff pokes his head up out of the water revealing that he's still alive.

On October 21st, 2015 at 11:36 P.M., 9 hours after capsize at night they noticed something floating in the water and Jeff swims over to get it. Jeff turns and found a box that contains an inflatable liferafe, Jeff pulls the strings from and inflates it. They head inside it and showed to the camera that they now have food, water, and a first aid kit.

On October 22nd, 2015 at 12:15 A.M., they lights up an emergency flale hoping that they'll be saved. At 3:20 A.M., Something bumped against their liferaft they checked outside and noticed a shark swimming near them. They then noticed a woman floating on surface onto the ocean. Josh jumps into the water and brings the woman on board. Megan grabs a flale as Josh argues with Megan as he tries to take it from her but accidentally let's it off as they immediately run out of the liferaft it catches on fire. The woman screams while side of the liferaft before it bursts into flames killing the woman. Jeff and Josh argue with Megan about her setting off the flale gun. Jeff swims away in anger until Josh plunges his head down the water along with camera and finds a shark swimming near him. Megan freaks out before she gets pulled into the water by a great white shark and gets eaten alive. At 7:33 A.M., Jeff films Josh blowing air into the life vest as they argue and fight. Jeff lays onto his back from a heartache. Josh tries to revive Jeff as he accidentally drops the camera. At 9:10 A.M. Josh lets go of Jeff's body as it sinks into the ocean. At 10:25 A.M., Josh talks to the camera and as he cries, he spots a helicopter in the sky and tries to get its attention but he is then devoured by a shark along with the camera as the camera lens cracks.

Trivia[]

  • Open Water was based on the disappearance of Tom and Eileen Lonergan in 1998 who went diving in the Australian Great Barrier Reef and got separated from their diving group which left them alone and suddenly disappeared. 2 days later, their diving equipment was found but however their bodies were never found and were possibly eaten by sharks.
  • In the first film, the sharks in the movie were real sharks but actors Blanchard Ryan and Daniel Travis was never bitten by them.
  • In Open Water 2 there are actually no sharks in the film, However, something swims by someone's leg at one point, but it is never actually shown to be a shark.
