The Shadowlords are the main antagonists of Ultima V: Warriors of Destiny.

Biography[]

The Shadowlords were born from shards of Mondain's Gem of Immortality, which were buried beneath the Britannian soil and resurfaced due to the magic used to locate the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom, which created an underground network beneath Britannia. Captain Johne happened upon these shards after his ship was swallowed by a whirlpool. Driven to madness due to the shards influence, he killed three of his crew members, whose blood spilled on the shards, resulting in the Shadowlords arising from the shards.

As they leave Johne behind burdened in guilt, they immediately set to spread chaos through Britannia. They kidnap and imprison Lord British, who was exploring the Underworld, and erect a citadel known as Stonegate, where they keep Lord British's scepter. After this they slowly corrupt Lord Blackthorn, a nobleman who had assumed kingship in Lord British's absence, turning him into a tyrant who perverts the virtues into draconian laws instituted by force.

Once the Avatar arrives after being called by his friends, he immediately takes upon himself to stop the influence of the Shadowlords and set things straight. The Shadowlords will roam the outskirts of the eight cities of virtue, using their influence to affect the citizen's behavior. Confronting them will only result in them disappearing for that day, however, as they will reappear on the next night. In order to defeat them, the Avatar retrieves their shards and casts them into the Eternal Flames of the Principles, banishing them forever.

The Shadowlords[]

The Shadowlords are spectres who embody the antithesis of the three Principles:

  • Faulinei, the Shadowlord of Falsehood
  • Astaroth, the Shadowlord of Hatred
  • Nosfentor, the Shadowlord of Cowardice
