A fortress... can always be rebuilt. However... this is Marineford, an island situated almost exactly in the center of the entire world. To the people of the world, who live in fear of evildoers coming and going amongst them, the true meaning lies in our position in this place! Our universal justice will never fall!
~ Sengoku.
Struggle all you like, but you're trapped in the palm of my hand!
~ Sengoku to Luffy.

Sengoku is a major antagonist in the One Piece franchise. He is the former Fleet Admiral of the Marines, one of the legendary figures of the era of Gol D. Roger, and is long time friends with retired Vice Admirals Monkey D. Garp and Tsuru. After the Marineford War, Sengoku retired from the Fleet Admiral position and was replaced by Sakazuki.

He is the adopted father of both the late Donquixote Rosinante and X Drake.

He was voiced first by the late Takkō Ishimori and later Tōru Ōkawa in the original Japanese version. In the English dubbed version, he was voiced by the late Ed Blaylock and later Philip Weber in the original English version.

Personality[]

Sengoku is presented as a proud, intelligent, and loyal follower of the World Government, who is willing to follow all of their orders. He holds a deep sense of justice, and opposes anyone who would go against the World Government. Because of this, he is very diligent as Fleet Admiral and adamant in capturing Pirates or stopping any potential threat to the World Government. This determination was shown when he decided to follow through with the World Government's orders to initiate a Buster Call on Ohara Island simply because they could read the poneglyphs which held information on the Ancient Weapons, and when Saul noted that the Oharans were only interested in learning the history of the world and had no interest in using the Ancient Weapons for destruction, Sengoku merely brushed it aside and told Saul to follow orders.

Sengoku showed great fear in a person's birth parent being enough to determine their future and potential threat, as shown with Ace being the son of Roger and Luffy being the son of Dragon. Sengoku went to great lengths to take care of both threats, holding a public execution for Ace and attempting to personally kill both him and Luffy during the Marineford War to ensure the security of the World Government.

However, as the years went by, the unwavering faith he had in the World Government began to fade, reaching it's breaking point at the end of the Marineford War, when he learned that the World Government wanted to keep the break-out at Impel Down a secret in order to protect the World Government's reputation. When hearing this order, he was extremely enraged that the World Government took priority of saving face over ensuring the safety of innocent civilians and governing nations. It is because of this event that he resigned as Fleet Admiral out of frustration with the World Government. This shows that his convictions are rooted in the desire to maintain peace and protect civilians, and his actions at Marineford were out of fear of what the conflict the pirates would bring and how the secrets of the One Piece could lead to total war. He also shows a compassionate side, taking in Donquixote Rosinante and treating him like his own son, and was driven to tears upon learning of his death.

After resigning from Fleet Admiral, Sengoku has since adopted a much more jovial and laid-back side of himself, teasing Sakazuki about the responsibilities and burdens of being Fleet Admiral, acting nearly identical to Garp when eating Rice Crackers and Soba Noodles. He even offered Tsuru and later Law some of his rice crackers. He also wondering where is Garp since there is the new flavor rice crackers are out. This indicates that a large reason for his serious and cold demeanour was due to the immense burden of his position leading the Marines.

Despite this, Sengoku still maintains his serious demeanor when necessary, having passed down his knowledge of the Four Emperors and the world in general to his successors, based on from his experience. When hearing Vice-Admiral T-Bone was killed, Sengoku showed concern for the civilians and how they would attack the Marines due to the influence of Cross Guild, showing that in spire of his laid back nature, he still acknowledges the threat that pirates can pose to the world and treats it in a serious manner. Sengoku tells Tsuru that they need to destroy Cross Guild and abolish the Marine hunting for good.

Biography[]

Sengoku was born in the South Blue and joined the Marines 56 years ago along with Monkey D. Garp and Tsuru, at the age of twenty-three. Over the years, Sengoku rose up through the ranks of the Marines, eventually achieving the rank of Admiral at some point before the Great Age of Pirates. Forty years ago, Sengoku was involved in the God Valley Incident.

Thirty-one years ago, Sengoku found Donquixote Rosinante who was grieving the death of his father Homing at the hands of his brother Doflamingo. Feeling empathy for the orphaned boy, Sengoku took him under his wing, coming to see him as his son. Rosinante eventually followed in Sengoku's footsteps and became a Marine himself, eventually rising to Commander.

In the years into his career as a Marine, Sengoku fought against several pirates such as Roger, Whitebeard, Shiki, and other infamous pirates.

Twenty-seven years ago, the Marines received word that Roger and Shiki were engaged in a conflict in the Edd War sea. Sengoku, Garp, and other high-ranking marines were dispatched to quell the conflict. Before departing with his crew (consisting of Kizaru and other rookie marines), Sengoku told Garp that Shiki was his to capture by was irritated when Garp stated he had to get there first. However, a huge storm had occurred in the area and half of Shiki's fleet was sunk while the Roger Pirates were able to survive the ordeal.

Three years later, Roger turned himself over to the Marines and his execution was announced to the world. A week before Pirate King Gol D. Roger's execution, Shiki attacked Marineford demanding that he be allowed to kill Roger, Sengoku and Garp intercepted him and fought him together. After a fierce battle that destroyed half of Marineford, they managed to defeat the Flying Pirate, and imprisoned him in Impel Down.

Twenty years ago before the current storyline, the Ohara Incident occurred and Sengoku used to be an admiral. During his time as an admiral, he received orders from the World Government to carry out a secret mission. This mission was to send a Buster Call to obliterate Ohara.

With these orders, Sengoku gave the Golden Den Den Mushi for the operation to CP9 director who was to investigate the situation, Spandine. Among the five Vice Admirals Sengoku chose to lead the Buster Call were Sakazuki, Kuzan, and Jaguar D. Saul. After the arrest of Nico Olvia, Sengoku notified Saul of his role in the upcoming mission. The giant protested against this and tried to reason with Sengoku that the Oharans were merely scholars interested only in history. Sengoku however turned a deaf ear and told Saul to just follow orders. Later, Sengoku received news that Saul had went rogue and liberated Nico Olvia from her imprisonment. Seeing that the Buster Call mission to Ohara was in jeopardy, Sengoku ordered his subordinates to quickly find the two before the operation could be stopped.

After the operation was finished, Sengoku was informed by Spandine that one of the scholars of Ohara had escaped from the Buster Call attack. This little girl, Nico Robin, was deemed a threat. With that in mind, Sengoku and other high ranking officials put up a bounty of Beli 79,000,000 on her in order to help catch her.

Jaya Arc[]

At Mary Geoise, he called a meeting with the Marines and remaining warlords. At the meeting, he stopped Donquixote Doflamingo who was forcing the Marine soldiers into attacking one another, before sarcastically greeting them and thanking them for coming. Sengoku assumed Doflamingo and Kuma would be the only ones attending, with Doflamingo stating why he came there before they were surprised to see Dracule Mihawk arrive. Sengoku questioned his arrival with Mihawk revealing that he heard the meeting pertains to the Straw Hat Pirates, who he had an interest in and would like to stay inform. He was surprised when Laffitte later appeared, with Tsuru telling them of his past before Laffitte moved the talk along to tell them about how his Captain Blackbeard would be a potential new member of the seven warlords. Sengoku asked what use does Blackbeard have to him with no bounty, as Laffitte explained they have a plan to make him see why and Doflamingo laughed, stating Teach caught his attention and told Sengoku to give him a chance.

Post-Enies Lobby Arc[]

Sengoku sent Vice Admiral Garp to arrest the Straw Hat Pirates, after they destroyed Enies Lobby and defeated CP9. However, he was enraged by Garp refusing because the Captain Monkey D. Luffy was his grandson. Nonetheless, he asserted authority and forced Garp to do as commanded, sending Kuzan to ensure the order is fulfilled. Despite Garp attacking the Straw Hats, the crew were able to escape Water Seven.

Thriller Bark Arc[]

Upon receiving word of Moria's defeat, an exasperated Sengoku sent Bartholomew Kuma to destroy the Straw Hats and any witnesses.

Sabaody Archipelago Arc[]

Sengoku was irritated to receive news that Luffy struck a Celestial Dragon and sent Admiral Kizaru to Sabaody Archipelago after him and any other pirates there. He also sent several Pacifista's and Bartholomew Kuma. as further back-up. Despite the added reinforcement, the Straw Hats and the other 11 rookie pirates escaped while only a few pirate crews were apprehended.

Impel Down Arc[]

He was outraged by Luffy breaking into Impel Down to save Ace, nearly holding Garp responsible. However, Garp simply laughed and states an old man's life his will stop the situation. As a result, Sengoku decided to leave the room angrily but not before stealing Garp's snacks and eating them all in front of the protesting Garp.

Sengoku expressed outrage Blackbeard stole a marine ship and was heading for Impel Down.

Marineford Arc[]

While going to Ace's execution stand, Sengoku tells Garp that he will tell the gathered mass and the world everything and he better not stop him, as Garp only told him that he won't. Sengoku speaks to Ace and reveals his knowledge of Ace's birth, before he tells everyone that Ace is actually the son of the Pirate King Gol D. Roger. After the Whitebeard Pirates appeared for their war against the Marines to save Ace from execution, Sengoku orders the Marines to get ready for a fight.

When Luffy appeared in the war alongside Jinbe and the prisoners from Impel Down, Sengoku was dismayed and angrily told the speechless Garp that his family is causing trouble again. After Luffy declared he would save Ace and revealed that he was his brother, Sengoku told the confused Marines to regain their wits and not Luffy take a lead in this war. He then announces Luffy's status as Ace's sworn brother and his heritage of being Revolutionary Dragon's son, making him a target too. This shocking news spread through the battlefield and the witnessing reporters made sure this reached everyone.

Once Luffy made it to the scaffold, he tried to free Ace but Sengoku would stand idly. He assumed his devil fruit form and attempted to carry out the execution of both brothers. However, Luffy used his devil fruit to stand against the attack while the scaffold was destroyed. Sengoku became infuriated to discover in the process that Luffy freed Ace and the two work together to fight off the Marines. Regardless, Ace ultimately fell at the hands of Admiral Akainu and Sengoku noticed Garp making a beeline to avenge his adoptive grandson. He quickly stops him, as Garp tells Sengoku he needed to make sure that he didn't get loose.

After the Blackbeard Pirates arrived with a newly strengthen crew consisting of Lv. 6 inmates, Sengoku angrily noted on his late appearance. He then spoke with Shiryu who was now with them and asked about Magellan but was told to find out for himself as he's now with Blackbeard. It didn't take Sengoku long to realize Blackbeard was using his Warlord status to reach Impel Down, something he confirmed before he casually resigned from his status. Sengoku then watched the battle between Blackbeard and Whitebeard, which resulted in Whitebeard's dying breath. As Whitebeard slowly died, he addressed Sengoku and told him someone capable of carrying on Roger's will appear before shouting his last words of revealing One Piece was real, to Sengoku's great horror before cursed Whitebeard who then died standing.

Afterwards, Blackbeard's crew place a black tarp on the dead Yonko, which Blackbeard soon enters promising to give the marines a good show. Sengoku was horrified when Blackbeard emerged from the tarp, where he revealed that through unknown means, he has stole Whitebeard's devil fruit ability and has now managed to control two devil fruit abilities at once, being the first person said to do so. Speechless, Sengoku watched the latter proclaimed that this was now his era. When seeing the marines were too scared of him to fight back, Blackbeard threaten to sink Marineford which resulted in Sengoku using his devil fruit powers to attack him for stating such a reckless desire. Sengoku then gave a passioned speech by how the Marines and Marineford stand to help the world, which got the marines back in their spirits, as Sengoku stated he won't allow Blackbeard to sink the island on a mere whim.

While the two clashed, Jesus Burgess tries to help Blackbeard, by striking Sengoku only to be stopped by Garp. Blackbeard then began taunting Garp and Sengoku saying he'll end their age just like he did Whitebeard. However, Koby then shouted for both marines and pirates to stop and began to give his speech to and the marines calling their fighting at this point irrelevant. Sengoku listened as the crying Koby stated anyone who continued fighting a pointless battle was nothing more than a fool and an annoyed Akainu tried to kill Koby, but was stopped by Shanks, who personally ends the war by having Blackbeard leave with his crew. Sengoku turned back to normal.

Shanks then asks for permission to have Ace and Whitebeard buried, something Sengoku allows over the protests of the Marines. Sengoku stated he'd only allow this because it was Shanks. He then told the Marines to gather the wounded and treat them immediately, before announcing the war was officially over.

Post-War Arc[]

After the war, he was seen bandaged from injuries that he gained from the war before he was approached by Brannew, who reported Magellan was in critical condition. Sengoku forbade Magellan from taking any responsibilities for the breakouts or to commit suicide for his failures. He then hears about the state of Lv. 6 in Impel Down, learning some (save for Blackbeard's recruits) are missing from their cells. Sengoku expressed horror at how Blackbeard had the inmates slaughter each other, with the strongest joining him. Sengoku realized that the survivors likely escaped too, as he noted the thought of any of them getting loose would destroy a country and ordered for updated bounties. However, Brannew revealed that he was under orders by the World Governmene not to report these foundings, leading to Sengoku to curse them for their suppression.

Sometime later, Sengoku approached Commander-in- Chief Kong and put in his retirement. Kong was disappointed but accepted Sengoku's and Garp's (who had came earlier) choice while ensuring their records remain untouched to motivate future marines. Before leaving, Sengoku then nominated Kuzan as his successor. Unortunately, Akainu became Sengoku's replacement.

Dressrosa Arc[]

Sengoku is aboard on Tsuru's ship. He offers Tsuru some of his rice crackers only her to decline. Sengoku and Tsuru arrived at Dressrosa. He cheerfully hearing from Issho of his arguement with Sakazuki and glad he is not a Fleet Admiral anymore. Sengoku asked one of the Marines to bring him Soba Noodles. He sees Mansherry and ask her to heal him. He meet Law who Sengoku offer his rice crackers but only for the Surgeon of Death to decline. He tells everything about Rosinante. When Law asked Sengoku if he knows about the D. Family, the former Fleet Admiral replied he has no clue and need carry out Rosinante's will. He hears Fujitora thanking Luffy for cleaning Doflamingo's and the World Government's mess.

Zou Arc[]

Sengoku tries to convince Fujitora to apologies to Sakazuki just so he could forgive Issho but he refused due to his own pride. Sengoku and the Marines were soon attacked by the Beast Pirates led by Jack (who attempted to rescue Doflamingo). However, Sengoku, Fujitora and the three Vice-Admirals (Maynard, Bastille and Tsuru) managed to defeat Jack to continue transporting Doflamingo to Impel Down.

Levely Arc[]

Sengoku teased Sakazuki for having a hard time as a Fleet Admiraal. Sengoku holding of Luffy's 1.5 billion bounty after the Totto-Land incident.

Wano Country Arc[]

Sengoku arranged a meeting to reveal the new young Marines about the Rocks Pirates and the God Valley Incident. He asked Brannew about the Emperors' current bounties. Sakazuki interrupted the meeting and reveal the reason why he and the Marines are willing to leave Wano alone, but Sengoku is not bothered at all. He talked to Sakazuki about Kozuki Oden.

Egghead Arc[]

Sengoku and Tsuru reads of Vice-Admiral T-Bone's death, showing concerned for the people that they are willing to protect due to Cross Guild. Sengoku recommended to Tsuru that they need to destroy Cross Guild in order to cease the Marine Hunting. Sengoku asked Hina of Garp's whereabouts since the new flavour Rice Crackers came out only to learn that he went to Hachinosu to rescue Koby from the Blackbeard Pirates.

Powers and Abilities[]

Sengoku Attacks the Blackbeard Pirates

Sengoku using his devil fruit powers

Being a prominent figure in Roger's era, Sengoku continues to be one of the most feared and prominent figures of the One Piece world. The Pirate King himself even stated after defeating a squad of Marines, they should have sent Garp or Sengoku after him while calling them the only Marines worth his time. In his days as an Admiral, he and Garp teamed up and fought against Shiki the Golden Lion, defeating him after a devastating battle that nearly took out have of Marineford. Years later, Blackbeard complimented Sengoku for being able to stand against him.

Sengoku is renowned for his tactical and strategic genius by Marines and pirates alike: he is mainly responsible for all the Marine maneuvers deployed throughout the Whitebeard War at Marineford, such as forwarding a plan to all Marines that Portgas D. Ace was to be executed ahead of the official schedule with the intention that the opposing pirate forces would intercept the message and lose their composure; he then conspired with Admiral Akainu in a plot to derail the alliance between Whitebeard's core divisions and the 41 independent New World pirate crews assisting by directing a 20-strong Pacifista division to target only the non-Whitebeard division pirates, and it was possible that the earlier transmissions regarding Ace's true parentage was not only an act of public justification but also to demoralize those pirates who were undermined by the Roger Pirates: with Akainu's persuasion, Sengoku's plan managed to drive one of those captains to attempt assassinating Whitebeard himself, and while the blow was not fatal, it did further debilitate Whitebeard's already hazardous condition. He operated his strategies while keeping close in mind the various powers of his greatest subordinates, especially the Marine Admirals: raising Marineford's siege walls in conjunction with Akainu's "Ryusei Kazan" to rout the allied pirate forces and destroy Whitebeard's flagship, the Moby Dick while protecting the brunt of the Marine garrison from the damage.

Even without his Devil Fruit powers, it is implied that he has enormous strength, enough to effortlessly hold down an enraged Garp with one hand. Garp even stated Sengoku needed to make sure that he didn't get loose.

Devil Fruit[]

Sengoku ate the "Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Daibutsu", a rarer-than-Logia Mythical Zoan-class Devil Fruit which allows him to turn into a gigantic Daibutsu, which is probably the reason for his nickname. Nearby Marines claim that they have never seen him use this power before the war. While enlarging, his Marine jacket, glasses, and pants enlarge with him; his uniform, which also enlarges, seems to be tied around his waist, though he was not seen doing it during the transformation. The color of his body (and uniform) seems to change to a golden skin color, similar to a polished gold statue. In this form his body has different proportions, his torso and arms are much larger compared to the rest of his body. This ability gives him a massive power boost to his already impressive strength, enough to cause the execution stand to collapse in one indirectly connecting punch, despite the combined effort of Luffy's Gear Third and Mr. 3's Candle Wall to absorb the attack. He can also launch an explosive shock wave with a palm thrust, enough to send a majority of the Blackbeard Pirates flying a fair distance.

Haki[]

Sengoku is one of the very few people in the world who can use all three types of Haki.

Trivia[]

  • Sengoku adopted Donquixote Rocinante (Corazon) as his son after the death of his biological father by the hand of his brother.
  • Like Garp, Sengoku's' favorite food is rice crackers. His second favorite food is soba noodles just like Fujitora.
