The Sando Aqua Monster

There's always a bigger fish.
~ Qui-Gon Jinn

The Sando Aqua Monster is a non-sentient, carnivorous mammalian aquatic predator of immense size from the Star Wars universe, first appearing in the 1999 live action film, Star Wars Episode I : The Phantom Menace.

Little is known for sure about the rare creature, and all that follows must be taken as tentative.

Physical characteristics

The sando aqua monster is the largest known animal in the seas of Naboo, averaging 200 meters in length and weighing some 54,000 tons. A long, powerfully muscled and sinewy body, vaguely feline in appearance, sports four powerful limbs, with webbed claws, a long, fin-tipped tail, and an elongated neck bearing a lizard-like head with two forward-facing eyes.

The larger hind legs are used for movement on the ocean floor and propulsion whilst swimming, and can allow the sando to stand upright. The much smaller front limbs presumably aid in swimming, and also serve to hold or rend prey. Lacking a streamlining layer of fat or blubber, sando appear to be not fully adapted to swimming, and scientists theorize that they may be terrestrial animals that have recently, in evolutionary terms, returned to the sea.

In the wild

The predatory habits of the sando aqua monster are unclear, given its size it must no doubt eat at every opportunity - how a creature so large sustains itself remains unclear.

The actual lifecycle of the sando remains a mystery, all that is known is females bear one pup per birth and nurse them for a year. The average life-span of a sando is speculated at 100 standard years, although like anything related to the sando this is still unknown.

There have been reports of sando surfacing in swamp lakes and attacking herbivore herds there, and reports of sando seen sunning themselves on sandbars have been heard, though both reports remain unsubstantiated.

Little is known about the giant creature, and many myths and legends surround it. To most natives of the planet Naboo, the sando aqua monster is more of a myth than an actual creature, as their deep-ocean habitat means observing them in the wild is very rare, and reports of washed-up carcasses equally so.

In Episode I

Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Jar Jar Binks, in a bongo submersible, encountered a sando aqua monster in their bongo. Obi-Wan Kenobi was able to steer so as to avoid the creature's maw . An opee sea killer and later a colo claw fish menacing the submersible were both devoured, eating and killed by a sando aqua monster and it saves Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Jar Jar Binks from these creatures.
