~ Ruber
Oh no, the stone!
~ Ruber's last words.

Sir Ruber, also known as Lord Ruber or simply Ruber for short, is the main antagonist of Warner Brothers' 1998 animated feature film Quest for Camelot, which is based on the 1976 fantasy novel The King's Damosel by the late Vera Chapman.

He is a traitorous and wicked former knight of the Round Table, who sought to gain ultimate power by taking over Camelot (and possibly the world) as well as avenging his previous defeat at the hands of none other than King Arthur himself. He also has his pet griffin as his enforcer, and his mutated mechanical barbarians for his cause. He is Kayley and Garrett's archenemy.

He was voiced by Gary Oldman, who also played Dr. Zachary Smith/Spider Smith in Lost In Space, Lord Shen in Kung Fu Panda 2Count Dracula in Bram Stoker's Dracula, Norman Stansfield in Léon: The Professional, Egor Korshunov in Air Force One, Mason Verger in Hannibal, Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg in The Fifth Element, General Grawl in Planet 51, Carnegie in The Book of Eli, Drexl Spivey in True Romance, Vladislav Dukhovich in The Hitman's Bodyguard, Lord Vortech in LEGO Dimensions, Father Solomon in Red Riding Hood, Rocky in True Crime: Streets of L.A., Dreyfus in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and Daniel Clarke in Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Personality[]

Sir Ruber has a rather mysterious past, yet despite his dubious ethics and less than pleasant disposition, Arthur saw a powerful fighter who can keep the enemy down, and by virtue of his success, he earned a place at the round table. Unfortunately Ruber appears to train under the ancient philosophy of Berserker warriors, tapping into insanity in order to become numb to pain, fearless, more dangerous, and following the philosophy that peace breeds weakness, and warfare shapes countries and keeps people strong. This is shown when he sang about how boring peace is and how chaos and carnage is his idea of fun. Ruber also is a sadomasochist, as he grabs burning coals and enjoys the sensation, and appears to have supernatural strength, as he punches dragons to death and violently manhandles a Griffin several times larger than himself. Ruber is highly arrogant and is so firm in his power that he rarely takes the trouble to hide his intentions, though in the very rare cases he is forced to, he can mask his nature. Ruber prefers to trade on his strength despite having higher than average intelligence, as though he usually uses brute strength to obtain whatever he wants, he can put his intelligence to the test and formulate very soundproof schemes. He exploited Juliana by making Kayley a hostage as she knew the latter couldn't be convinced to help him with the threat of death, meaning Ruber is aware of other's empathy and can exploit it to meet his own agenda. He doesn't appear to even understand fear, which makes him brave. However, despite his discourteous and cocky behavior, Ruber was steadfast, allegiant and trustworthy to Arthur one time, but suddenly changed, because he is denied both the ways he wants the share of his land, and to become the self-proclaimed new king. Ruber is far different from the other knights, with his deformed look and his own muscular strength that makes him stand out. He also has a noticeable twitch that showcases his madness, often most evident when he utters the word "mine!". Despite his evil tendencies, Ruber is quite playful and remains superficially amiable and pleasant in his tone. He's usually cheerful and even flirtatious, even when taking hostages and has a very sharp wit. Even when insulted or mocked, Ruber will shrug it off or take it as a compliment. For example he takes pride in his insanity and feels flattered rather than angered if anyone insinuates it. He also dislikes women speaking to him in a "rude" tone, but finds women less annoying than men, if only because he doesn't see them as as much of a threat.

Although he gathered his henchmen and the Griffin, he can also be aggravated, resentful and quarrelsome by their nonsensical foolishness and their awkwardness, especially where they are about to take Excalibur from the ogre. Ruber does not take this very well if Kayley or Garrett meddle with his plan, foiling them. However, little is specifically known about Ruber knowing about Excalibur that after he melded the sword to his arm, and accidentally gets it trapped in the stone later on, meaning that he can’t pull himself or the sword out, which causes his unintentional downfall and demise. Ruder has made his distaste and loathing for ogres very clear.

Biography[]

As stated in the beginning of the film, Sir Ruber was a trusted knight of King Arthur and a member of the Knights of the Round Table one time. However, following the ten-year rule of peace and justice in Camelot, Ruber grew addicted to power. During a meeting, he attempts to take advantage of his rank by desiring riches, to which Arthur refuses to permit. Ruber takes up a stand by nominating himself for the throne of Camelot afterwards. One of Arthur's loyal Knights named Sir Lionel upbraids him for it, swearing that no one will serve a false king. This drove Ruber into a murderous rage, wanting to assassinate Arthur with a mace, but the fearless Lionel defended the king at the cost of his life, just before Ruber turn to ambush Arthur. However, using Excalibur, Arthur beats Ruber back. Ruber flees away from Camelot in exile afterwards, vowing revenge that he'll claim Excalibur and all of Camelot to himself someday.

Following his ten years in exile, Ruber has gathered a swarm of barbaric followers to support his cause to take over Camelot. As the tenth year passed by, Ruber formulated a plan involving to steal Excalibur and use land carriages to infiltrate into Camelot to exact his revenge. As it started, he ambushed the lands of Lionel's widow, Lady Juliana, to take hold of her land wagons, and forced her to tag along with his plot by threatening to slaughter her daughter Kayley (the protagonist of the film). Although Ruber has his pet griffin to steal Excalibur from Camelot, the theft is bungled and the sword is dropped into the Forbidden Forest, thanks to the intervention of Ayden, the pet silver-winged falcon of the legendary wizard Merlin. During the ransacking of Lady Juliana's village, Ruber uses a potion that he bought from some witches (the potion is labeled to have come from ACME) to transform his followers into an army of "iron men with hands of steel" and makes ready to ride to Camelot. However, upon learning of the Excalibur's current location from the Griffin and seeing Kayley getting away into the Forbidden Forest to search for it, Ruber orders the Griffin and several of his men to go after her. During much of the film, Ruber and his posse chase Kayley (who is assisted by Ayden now, a blind hermit named Garrett, and a two-headed dragon named Devon and Cornwall), only to fall into some trouble with the forest's natural inhabitants.

Eventually, after Kayley finally found Excalibur, Ruber and his men manage to clear off from the forest, and capture her and Ruber grabs Excalibur from Kayley at long last. With the legendary sword in his possession at last, Ruber uses his ACME potion to fuse it to his wrist afterwards, replacing his right arm. Delighted, Ruber continues on with his plot, gaining entrance to Camelot and ambushing Arthur one more time while the Griffin and the rest of Ruber's men ward off the rest of the loyal knights, although Kayley manages to free herself with the aid of Bladebeak.

Fortunately, Garrett, Ayden, Devon, and Cornwall show up to the rescue; while Ayden, Devon, and Cornwall deal with the Griffin by burning him, Garrett takes Kayley to an underground tunnel leading to the Round Table, where Ruber is ambushing Arthur before he declares himself to be the new king. During the fight, Kayley overhears Ruber to Arthur about the demise of Lionel. Swearing that she will not serve a false king, Kayley slams a wooden beam into Ruber, launching him out of the window, and she's trapped by him when she follows. Garrett attempts to strike Ruber from behind with his staff, but Ruber blocks the ambush and throws Garrett next to Kayley. However, he's unmindful that both Garrett and Kayley are next to the stone where Arthur wield Excalibur from it once before he became king.

Ruber closes in for the kill, but when he is about to strike, the two lovers step aside and Ruber accidentally plunges Excalibur back into the stone. The power of the stone kicks in and Ruber, realizing this, attempts to pull it away to no avail, as the energy gives off by the stone expunges the taint of his ACME potion from the sword. As a result, Ruber's soldiers revert to their ordinary human selves, permitting the knights of Camelot to arrest them and reclaim their kingdom and Bladebeak is transformed back into a chicken and Devon and Cornwall were split into two, but decide to stay as one. At the same time, Ruber is destroyed as the energies between the stone and the potion conflict with one another, disintegrating him to pieces, being eliminated by the very same power that he has sought to obtain, thus avenging Lionel.
