Villain Overview

I'm a director, Sid. I direct.
~ Roman Bridger.

Roman Bridger is the main antagonist of the Scream movie franchise.

He is a young music video director who landed the Stab 3 job, where he enacted his revenge against Sidney Prescott. After he revealed that he was the architect behind the Ghostface murder sprees and thus indirectly responsible for the events of the series, he fought Sidney to the death, got outsmarted by her and lost. He was then killed by Dewey.

He is also the arch-nemesis as well as the secret maternal half-brother of Sidney Prescott.

He was portrayed by Scott Foley. In the Japanese dubbed version, he was voiced by Ryōtarō Okiayu, the latter also voiced Kaku and Kizaru in One Piece, Berserker in Fate/Zero, Scar in Fullmetal Alchemist, Crusadermon in Digimon Frontier, Gemini Saga in Saint Seiya, Hades God Cyclops in Mahou Sentai Magiranger, Sima Yi and Sima Shi in Dynasty Warriors series, Orochi in Warriors Orochi series, Treize Khushrenada in Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, Aoi Rokushō in Naruto, King Gaius in Tales of Xillia, Nero Kilner in Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patranger, Fatima in Magi, Gâteau du Roi in Tokyo Mew Mew, Kazuharu Fukuyama in Girls Bravo, Shigure Sohma in Fruits Basket (2001), Abel in Fire Emblem, Zero in Mega Man X series, Toriko in Toriko, Ebisu in Noragami, Grandemon in Digimon Xros Wars and Isaac Ray Peram Westcott in Date A Live.

While in-disguise, he is voiced by Roger L. Jackson, and in-costume scenes as Ghostface were portrayed by Brian Avery.

Personality

Presenting himself as the artistic director in an almost bumbling, Woody Allen way, Roman deluded himself to be a tragic hero.

However, after the reveal, Roman showed his true nature as a sadistic, entitled, vengeful, heartless, spiteful, egotistical, jealous and anti-social man. He took pride at executing his own mother, showing no empathy for her suffering, and even hated Sidney because she was born, willing to kill 9 people just to frame her at his killing spree.

History

Scream (1996)

Roman did not appear in the first Scream movie; however, he was the overarching antagonist of the movie. He corrupted Billy Loomis into starting a killing spree along with his friend, Stu Macher.

Scream 2

He did not appear in the sequel, but he might have been aware of the Windsor College Murders committed by Billy's mother Nancy Loomis and her lackey Mickey under everybody's nose.

Scream 3

When the actors begin to get killed off in the ways of the new film, everyone realizes there is yet another copycat Ghostface. Instead of just using the past killers' tactics of just calling and killing, Roman used new approaches. These include filling the room with gas in the dark, making Tom Prinze have to use a lighter to read, causing the entire house to explode. He also uses a new voice masker that sounds like people someone knows (including Sidney's, Gale's, and Dewey's) making them easy to manipulate, trick and confuse. This was used on Cotton and his girlfriend's death and allowed him to set a trap for Gale and Dewey using Sidney's voice which was to lure Sidney to him.

Roman was found dead in a trunk by Gale but he was revealed later to have faked his death. After killing Angelica Tyler, Tyson Fox and Jennifer Jolie, he kidnapped Gale Weathers and Dewey Riley in order to draw Sidney over. When Sidney arrives, Roman makes her use a metal detector in order to see if she brought a gun. The metal detector detects the gun and Sidney is forced to throw it in the pool. After going inside and finding Gale and Dewey tied up, she is attacked by Roman. It is then revealed that she brought a spare gun and shoots Roman repeatedly in the chest, seemingly killing him. When Sidney begins to untie Gale and Dewey, Roman's body is gone.

Detective Mark Kincaid then arrives on the scene having heard the gunshots and she accuses him of being the killer. Mark denies it and is proven right when a very alive Roman attacks and injures Mark. Sidney tries to shoot him again, but he dodges. She tries to do it again, but she is out of bullets, and she runs with Roman in pursuit. After being cornered, Roman finally reveals himself as the killer and that the bullets failed to kill him because of a bulletproof vest. Roman reveals his motives and we learn he staged his own death to eliminate himself as the suspect. Roman reveals to Sidney that he is her half-brother.

Maureen Prescott was raped by the producer John Milton and his gang while acting as a B movie actress and she gave birth to Roman. She abandoned him causing him to fend for himself in Hollywood. Roman wanted revenge and believed that he should have all the fame that Sidney had. His next step was to kill John Milton and intends to frame Sidney for it with a recording of his confession that was altered with his voice changer to sound like Sidney's. While Gale and Dewey get free of their binds, Sidney furiously tells Roman how she doesn't care about his tragic backstory since the other Ghostfaces told her the same thing and corrects him telling him everything he's done is no excuse for killing innocent people and how he foolishly blames other people when it was own choice saying there's no revenge and no one else to blame for his murders, because he chose to do it all by himself, making Roman finally lose his temper and hurt his feelings with her smart words provokes Roman into a fight, Roman manages to knock Sidney down and desperately knocks her down which he is begins strangling Sidney to death as Sidney continues to resist as Dewey cuts the power and Mark returns.

Roman hides and knocks him out with a chair. During this, Sidney gets back up and gets Roman's knife, but Roman also gets Mark's gun and seemingly shoots Sidney dead. After looking away and then looking back, he sees that her body is gone. Desperately trying to find her to win and keep her friends out, Sidney soon pops up in a fit of rage and stabs Roman in the back twice with an icepick as he screams in pain. She reveals she had a bulletproof vest on too, showing that she came to know how psychopaths like Roman thinks, having him completely outsmarted. She then stabs him in the heart, holding her half-brother's hand as he apparently dies. When Dewey and Gale arrived, Roman suddenly jumped up to foolishly attack the group in a desperate fit of rage, when they laid their defenses. He was shot several times in the chest by a furious Dewey, seemingly hurting Roman but not killing him, because he's still wearing the bulletproof vest, until Sidney reminded him that he should shoot him in his unprotected head, a piece of advice Dewey uses to kill the psychopath, finally putting an end to his pathetic life.

Scream 4

Even after his death, others were still inspired to start a killing spree once again by themselves without his tricks. Sid got a lot of fame defeating him during the third movie, making Jill Roberts (who was also Sidney and Roman's cousin) more jealous than ever and corrupting Charlie Walker just like Billy and Stu, but for once Sidney's mother wasn't involved in this murder spree this time.

Quotes

Not only did they kill the film, but they killed my cast. Nobody is gonna wanna work for me, Variety called me a "pariah", I don't even know what a pariah is.
~ Roman to John Milton on the Stab 3 murders.
Roman: You're not going anywhere Sidney. It's time you came to terms with me, and with mother. Maybe you never knew her at all Sidney, maybe you just can't get past the surface of things!
Sidney: Who the hell are you?
Roman: The other half of you. I searched for a mother too, an actress named Rina Reynolds, tried to find her my whole life! and four years ago, I actually tracked her down. Knocked at her door thinking she'd welcome me with open arms, but she had a new life and a new name! Maureen Prescott! You were the only child she claimed Sidney! She shut me out in the cold forever! Her own son... Roman Bridger, director. And brother.
~ Roman's monologue and him revealing himself to be the mastermind behind the Woodsboro murders.
Here he is. The man who gave away your mother's innocence! Huh? What he did to her, made her a slut, didn't it? Huh? She never recovered from that night right here in this room! They f-cked her three ways from Sunday! Ruined her life! Ruined yours too didn't it Sid? Ya hate him Sid? Come on, I know you do. I'm sure you do.
~ Roman on the rape of Maureen Prescott.
AHHH! AH! AH! AHHHHHH! AHH! YOU CAN'T F-CKING KILL ME! AHHH! AHHHHHHH!
~ Roman's villainous breakdown and last words before being shot in the head by Dewey, foolishly attempting to kill the group by himself refusing to give up when Sidney already overpowered him.

Trivia

  • Roman Bridger is the first and only Scream villain to not have a partner.
    • Roman is also the only individual Ghostface, so therefore, he has the highest body count per killing spree. Kieran Wilcox has an even higher body count overall, standing at an estimated body count of 11-12, but unlike Roman, Kieran killed his victims in two different killing sprees.
  • Because he was behind everything from the start of the films, Roman can be considered the Greater-Scope Villain of the franchise. However, his possible father John Milton was responsible for the events too.
  • Roman Bridger's first and last name both contain hidden meanings
    • Roman is a reference to Roman Polanski, a Hollywood producer with a sordid history.
    • Bridger refers to the fact that he is responsible for the events of the series (i.e. he 'bridges' the movies together).
  • In the scene where Neve Campbell's character Sidney stabs Scott Foley's Roman after hiding behind a bar with an icepick, the screams of pain are genuine as Neve missed Scott's protective padding and accidentally stabbed him for real. The scene was kept in the film since the reaction was perfect.
  • Roman's actor, Scott Foley, shares the same birthday which is July 15th.
  • In Scream 2022, footage of Roman's actor, Scott Foley, from the Dawnson's Creek episode "The Scare", a parody of Scream, as his character, Cliff Elliot, is represented as an in-universe parody of the film within a film series Stab, with Roman himself portraying Elliot in place of Foley, during his acting career, before the events of Scream 3.
