~ James to the Rhino

The Rhino is the secondary antagonist in the book James and the Giant Peach and the 1996 film of the same name.

Appearance

The Rhino is a giant black cloud that was shaped like a rhinoceros with yellow eyes.

Biography

In the book

In the book, the Rhino is a normal rhinoceros that escaped from the London zoo.

In James and the Giant Peach

In the film, the Rhino was a mysterious monster, made entirely out of clouds, that resemble a rhinoceros. The Rhino came out of nowhere and gobbled up James' parents, forcing James to live with his two evil aunts; Aunt Spiker and Aunt Sponge.

Spiker and Sponge used the Rhino to scare James. It is unknown whether the Rhino was once a real rhinoceros when he killed James' parents or if he is just a spirit haunting James (more likely the second one since rhinoceroses are herbivores and do not eat meat).

When James and his best friends finally reach New York, the Rhino appears and tries to slow down their progress. Slowly, the creature approaches the giant peach, using the power of fear to frighten James. When James manages to muster up the courage to say he isn't afraid of the Rhino, the Rhino ultimately dissolved, but not before shooting a final bolt of lightning at the giant peach.

Powers and Abilities

  • The Rhino is made of clouds, so he probably couldn't be harmed.
  • The Rhino seems to have the ability to control the weather, because before he arrives, a strong wind comes and a storm cloud also appears, and when the Rhino arrives, lightning appears afterwards.
  • The Rhino also used fear as a weapon: The more a person feared him, the stronger it got.
