Friends. Those companions you speak of are only friends during those fun, yet unimportant times. When painful times come, they won't be your ally.
~ Rena Ryuuguu
There is no human perpetrator... Everything is by Oyashiro-sama's will.
~ Rena Ryuuguu

Reina Ryuuguu, better known as Rena Ryuuguu, is one of the main protagonists and anti-heroes of the Higurashi series. She kills seventeen people throughout the whole series, plus herself.

Rena was voiced by Mai Nakahara in Japanese and Mela Lee in the 2007 anime and Emi Lo in Gou/Sotsu in English. In When They Cry: Reshuffle, she was portrayed by Airi Matsuyama.

Biography[]

Rena was born in Hinamizawa under the name "Reina". She and her parents moved to Ibaraki due to the advancing career of her mother, Reiko. One day, Reiko took her daughter to the amusement park without telling her husband. She then introduces a work friend of hers named Akihito to Rena. Reiko then asked Rena if she would agree to start a family with the two of them. Reiko announced that she was planning to separate from her husband and marry Akihito. Rena angrily told her mother that she would live with her father and refused to see her again. She broke three glass windows at her school and beat up all the students there, though she was later expelled for it. Refusing to admit that she was Reiko's daughter, she insists everyone (excluding her father) call her "Rena" instead of "Reina".

After hearing from Oyashiro-sama, Rena and her father moved back to Hinamizawa. Here she met Satoshi, Mion, Satoko, and Rika. Her and Satoshi were experiencing the same things in their heads, always hearing footsteps behind them when nobody was there. At one point Miyo gives her some of her notes, and she becomes convinced that the curse is actually a virus, which it actually is, which makes her try and blow up the school. In the first arc, she is constantly terrorizing Keiichi, but later it became clear that all of her and Mion's doings were in the mind of a very paranoid Keiichi.

Personality[]

Rena is a typically inadequate and shy girl. She often talks mainly with Keiichi and Mion. Despite this, she will break from her usual shyness whenever she sees something cute, little, or beautiful, shouting "Kaiiii" (Short for the Japanese word, Kawaii, meaning "cute"). Her penalty games often involve forcing the losers to do something adorable while still demeaning.

However, like most Higurashi characters, this is usually only her character on the surface. Whenever faced with a personal subject or a memory of her past, she will instantly switch to a very blunt, mysterious, straightforward, and even intimidating personality. She is able to form detailed and eerily accurate hypotheses of crime scenes based on the evidence she observes. She can spot lies very easily, and doesn't appreciate it when people do this. She will often yell "USO DA!!"("You're Lying!") out of nowhere in a very aggressive manner when she spots someone lying to her. On the other hand, she often empathizes with and can identify with people who suffer from Hinamizawa Syndrome.

Throughout her life in Hinamizawa she is trying to cope with the memories of her troubled past, suppressing it with her "cute mode", which indicates that she may have post-traumatic stress disorder.

Under the influence of Hinamizawa Syndrome, she becomes one of the most violent, unstable and tactical characters in the series, once going as far as to attempt burning down her school while she and all the students in her class are trapped inside (even succeeding in Yoigoshi-hen), all because she wanted to force the local police to investigate an alien conspiracy. She even sets up a homemade bomb on the school rooftop. However, she shows remorse after Keiichi manages to bring her back to her senses during their rooftop fight. This distrust in her friends and delusional ideas were caused by Hinamizawa Syndrome.

Rena's main weapon is her hatchet, with a single edge, the back of which which she uses to safely take down an enemy. Rena also constructs a firebomb using a gasoline-filled rain gutter, a kitchen timer, and a pair of wires, which she places on top of her school in a couple of the arcs. Finally, Rena sometimes uses other weapons at various points in the series, including a baseball bat seen in a flashback, a glass shard and a metal pipe when killing Rina Mamiya. Rena also wields a bolt-action hunting rifle briefly in the Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kaku -Outbreak- OVA, but never fires it, instead giving it to Keiichi's father to defend himself.

Appearance[]

Rena has reddish-orange hair and blue eyes. Her casual outfit usually consists of a white dress with purple ribbons, and her "favorite" white cap. At school, she wears a yellow tie, with a white-blue uniform.

Trivia[]

  • Rena is often compared to Shion Sonozaki as two of Higurashi's most mentally unstable characters. The two also share several other characteristics:
    • Both have put much time into studying "Oyashiro-Sama's Curse" and Hinamizawa Syndrome. Rena was more knowledgeable on the subject however, as Rena was in possession of a scrapbook detailing information about the brain parasites, whereas Shion had the one solely about the mysterious yearly killings. Both of these were deliberately given to them by Miyo Takano to fuel their paranoia. She also did this to Satoko whom she knew was an L5 patient.
    • Both have a very distinct hatred towards lies. Rena's case of which is mentioned above.
    • Both have gone on killing sprees.
  • Rena is a favorite among Higurashi fans, as she is one of the most well-known characters in the entire series and often appears on much of Higurashi's official art and serves as something of a mascot for 07th Expansion.
