Someday i'll lop of your head... and make it mine.
~ Rakshas upon seeing Griffith.
It's still to early to leave... we haven't yet seen blood.
~ Rakshas sadistically talking to a Kushan officer.

Rakshas is an antagonist in Berserk. He is a mysterious apostle who belonged to the Kushan Bakiraka clan before joining the Band of the Hawk.

He claims to serve Griffith until he can take his head. He states this has to do with the way all apostles are enthralled by him.

Appearance[]

"Human" form[]

In comparison to the other apostles who have a clear human form, the human form of Rakshas mainly resembles how he looks in his full demon body.

His body resembles that of a man underneath a black sheet having a black cloak-like body that he can shift in multiple forms. As a result, he moves sensitive parts of his body to different areas while fighting so his enemies can't hurt him. His body also makes him very difficult to be harmed, especially with blunt objects because that would literally be like trying to punch and stab a piece of cloth. His body can be easily harmed by fire, however.

One of the most noticeable aspects to his design are the masks he collects and has on his face. His first mask has a simple design. It has three red eyes with one on his forehead, two droplet-like shapes underneath the nose and around the area of the jaw are a few spikey appendages. His second mask resembles the first but having three more rounded eyes that on top have fledge-like crests on them. When Rakshas takes ofF his mask, his face features eye sockets that are completely dark along with his mouth.

Apostle form[]

In his apostle form, he becomes much larger and more unhinged. His cloak body begins to lose its simple stealthy form to start appearing more monstruous and brutish. When he's flying, numerous wings that look like that of bats begin forming around his body. The movements when flying also resembles those of a Chinese dragon.

But for the most part, his general appearance does stay the same as that to his "human" form.

Personality[]

Rakshas is a hedonistic killer who plays with his victims before the kill. He has an arrogant and demeaning personality, belittling the tapasa (known as the summit of the Bakiraka clan). He also has a close attachment to his mask, becoming depressed enough to retreat from battle after the first one was broken by Silat. He also feels sad when the second gets pierced during his night ambush at Falconia.

Rakshas seems to be a very quiet person, favoring strings of words and short sentences as he notices things, only taking the time to properly speak when addressing people directly, but his speech devolves as battles become more chaotic.

Biography[]

Past[]

The only thing known about his past is the fact that he was a member of the Kushan Bakiraka clan when he was still a human, which was banished by the Kushan Empire for allying with the overthrown Kushan royal family. He himself was eventually banished by the Bakiraka clan for unknown reasons and has been seen as a "taboo" ever since".

After his banishment, Rakshas experienced a moment when he was in the "depths of despair", which caused his beherit (which he obtained at an unknown point in time) to activate, to which he proceeded to sacrifice someone he loved dearly to obtain evil power along with losing most of his humanity.

Falcon of the Millennium Empire Arc[]

Rakshas is first seen during the formation of the new Band of the Hawk. Griffith was about to be attacked by two Tapasa, but Rakshas blocked their attack midair and insulted the two for their slowness despite being peak members of the Bakiraka clan. The Tapasa and Silat immediately recognize him as the clan's exile. Rakshas then notes that while he plans to kill Griffith, he will serve him loyally. He then fights the Tapasa, gliding through their attacks with his cloak-like body. The Tapasa and Silat eventually escape and when all the Kushans have been defeated, Rakshas looks on over to Griffith while the other apostles bow before their God Hand superior.

When the Kushans lose yet another battle to Griffith and his army, a Kushan staff officer quickly tries to return to their headquarters, when suddenly they see numerous inhuman shapes around them while walking through a forest. Rakshas appears behind the officer, telling him that he and the other ones "haven't yet seen blood." Rakshas and the apostles then proceed to murder all of the remaining Kushans.

When a group of Kushan scouts try to assassinate Griffith from afar, Rakshas comes up behind them saying that they shouldn't be spoiling the emotional moment between Griffith and Mule, while quickly killing them afterwards.

During the Kushan invasion of Vritannis, Rakshas poisons the war elephants causing them to go on a rampage and accidentally trample many Kushan soldiers.

During the battle between the new Band of the Falcon and the Ganishka-spawn, Griffith, Nosferatu Zodd and Rakshas travel to the center of Ganishka's "Shiva" form. Rakshas watches under Zodd's wing as Griffith uses the sword strike caused by Skull Knight to kill Ganishka and cause the Great Roar of the Astral World.
