[feral scream] PIGGSY'S GONNA SUCK YOUR GUTS!
~ Piggsy taunting James Earl Cash.
Piggsy angry! Aarrgghhnnry!
~ Piggsy expressing his animalistic rage.

Piggsy is a major antagonist and the penultimate boss in the 2003 controversial stealth/horror video game Manhunt. He is an obese, mentally disturbed maniac who chases Cash through the abandoned attic of Starkweather's mansion.

He was voiced by Hunter Platin, who also voiced Phil Cassidy and Curly Bob in Grand Theft Auto III and The Psycho in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. The motion-capture for him was provided by Alex Wouman.

Biography[]

Backstory[]

Nothing is known about Piggsy's true identity, nor how he turned feral or how he came in contact with Starkweather. He was presumably a simple-minded dimwit before being enlisted by Starkweather to perform in his snuff movie ring, and it's implied that starring in those movies caused his insanity. He became a chainsaw-wielding mass murderer, wearing a pig's skinned head as a mask, hence his nickname.

He had a long and successful career in Starkweather's company, starring as the protagonist in extremely gruesome and disturbing snuff movies such as "Piggsy's Greatest Hits" and "Piggsy's Bloopers" where Piggsy killed dozens, if not possibly hundreds with his chainsaw. Because of this, Piggsy became Starkweather's star performer in his snuff films and slaughtered the runners with glee.

Presumably, Starkweather eventually stopped making him star in his snuff films and instead decided to use him to dispose of the bodies of the people who fell victim to his snuff films. He had him chained and locked up in the abandoned attic of his estate. He fed him human flesh, which is delivered to him by Cerberus guards, who, in spite of being themselves deadly and cold-blooded killers, treated him with genuine fear and disgust due to Piggsy's savage instincts.

Events of Manhunt[]

Locked away in the attic, the Cerberus group are seen feeding Piggsy while insulting him and a while later when James Earl Cash is coming to confront Starkweather and his mercenaries in his mansion, he simultaneously breaks the chains and gets free. Presumably, he wishes to kill Lionel Starkweather as a form of revenge.

When James was caught by the Cerberus after evading the CCPD and the SWAT, he was brought to Starkweather's Estate, where the guards decided to defy the director's orders and execute the protagonist was the amount of trouble he'd caused them. Piggsy, now armed with a chainsaw, kills multiple Cerberus guards, inadvertently saving Cash and allowing him to reach the mansion. Once inside, he kills the Cerberus Leader, acquires the key and enters the elevator leading to Starkweather's office, but Piggsy catches up to Cash and ambushes him, prompting the protagonist to crawl through the elevator hatch into the attic. Once both of them arrive there, a lengthy fight ensues, in the process of which Cash stabs Piggsy in the back with two glass shards and a wooden spike.

Unable to take the pain anymore, Piggsy breaks down the door to his lair and returns to his room. When Cash goes searching for him, he regains his courage and chases Cash up to the top floor where he steps on a faulty grid that starts to wobble due to his weight, startling him and forcing him to run back. James then lures him onto the grid again and this time it gives way. Piggsy manages to grab onto the ledge but loses his chainsaw to Cash, who slices his arms off with it, causing Piggsy to plummet to his death.

Personality[]

Piggsy is a remorseless and wrathful serial killer, butchering all those who come across his path with his chainsaw, while mimicking a pig's grunt. He is completely inhuman and childlike in behaviour and has lost all connection with reality due to the high level of violence and pressure he was exposed to, as well as the inhumane treatment he was subjected to after his confinement to the attic. His mental state has degraded into that of an animal, as he refers to himself in third person and seems to only be capable of speaking a few basic words and squealing like a pig, while seemingly having no qualms with consuming raw human flesh and living in his own waste in a filthy, rundown attic room, even calling it "home".

Manhunt's game manual, fashioned as an "official" Valiant Video Enterprises catalogue, features a section displaying the originals and replicas of the hunters' weapons, including Piggsy's signature tool, a chainsaw. It's stated that Piggsy intentionally leaves its blades dull to further his victims' suffering, however, given his poor mental faculties, it could be a decision made by his masters rather than the dim-witted man himself, although it's possible that this modification was performed by him while he still retained some of his sanity.

He is heavily obsessed with any potential victims in his vicinity and attacks everyone on sight with reckless abandon, as seen when he slays a number of armed Cerberus and relentlessly pursues Cash, despite the latter having nothing to do with him, and often throws tantrums whenever his victims escape or fight back (or rather attempt to fight back). He seems to be delusional, perceiving himself as an actual pig and views the act of slaughtering his victims as playing with them (much like another hunter encountered in the game, Babyface 1, who kills Cash's relatives). He's so divorced from reality that even the pain of having both of his arms sliced off doesn't snap him out of his delusion, since he keeps his act and squeals like a pig during his execution. With that being said, Piggsy does still have some common sense left in him, which is shown when he retreats to his hideout after being severely injured by Cash and even notices the grid on the stairwell wobbling the first time he steps on it, though his instinct of self-preservation gives way to homicidal rage shortly after. In the end, he demonstrates a complete lack of the ability to learn from his mistakes, as he can be lured on the same faulty grid again, leading to his demise.

It is known that Piggsy and the scrapped Smileys leader Scarecrow (another snuff performer who left the middle and kept his sanity unlike Piggsy) are bitter enemies, although the reason behind their rivalry remains uncertain. It should be noted as well that Piggsy's first escape and the Scarecrow were never confirmed to be a part of the official canon.

Despite being animalistic due to his madness and therefore preferring to not wear any clothes, Piggsy is shown wearing bandages around his arms and legs, possibly showing he still knows how to take care of his own wounds. However, these could also have been applied by him when he still retained his sanity or by Starkweather and his hunters in order to force him to continue making snuff films.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Extreme Strength: Piggsy possesses incredible physical strength which surpasses any individual seen in the game. Piggsy's sheer strength and killer instinct rival those of the game's protagonist. As showcased during Cash's stealthy attacks on the maniac, Piggsy's single punch causes the hero to bleed and sends him to his knees, requiring him to halt for a short while to come to his senses.
  • Chainsaw wielding: Unsurprisingly, he is able to effortlessly swing his cumbersome weapon around, being able to bring Cash down in three swift hits with his chainsaw. He even used it very effectively against several heavily armed and skilled Cerberus mercenaries and killed them without injuring himself.
  • High Pain Threshold: Piggsy is notably durable and resilient. He's impervious to any melee damage, be it Cash's fists or a glass shard, which fail to drag his health down even a little, with the deep stab wounds to his back being the only injury to bring him serious harm, causing him to fall back for a few seconds to recover before he flees to his room after enduring three consecutive stabbings.
  • Superb Mobility: Despite his apparent obesity, Piggsy is a fast and nimble adversary, whose dashing speed of running and attacking prove to be rapid enough to slaughter several duly trained, firearm-wielding Cerberus in a short span of time and before they even had the chance to shoot him, as evidenced by their abrupt transmissions in the "Border Patrol" cutscene.
  • Enhanced awareness: Thanks to his primal state of mind and many years of working as a successful snuff film actor, Piggsy had developed heightened levels of vigilance. As a matter of fact, he is by far the most alert hunter in the game. While standing in place, he looks both to his left and right, with his turns being more frequent, sharp and wide than those of the regular hunters, making it difficult to sneak up on him from either side, and even checks behind himself on occasions by quickly turning his head and torso instead of making a slow 180 turn, with this behavior being unique to his AI.

Trivia[]

  • In the game's beta version, Piggy was named Ratty and wore a rat mask.
  • Piggsy's body can be found in the bonus mission "Hard as Nails", but only if the player uses a trainer to move through one of the walls.
  • One of The Pervs in Manhunt 2 wears a pig mask, a reference to Piggsy.
  • A rotting pig mask can be found in Red Dead Redemption 2, another reference to Piggsy.
  • Piggsy himself could be based on Farmer Vincent, as both wield chainsaws and have pig masks. He could also be based off Leatherface from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre due to both being overweight men who wield chainsaws and are cannibalistic.
  • If one looks very closely during the attic section, Piggsy's genitalia is visible, however, it disappears during the second phase of the boss fight, which's most likely an oversight from the developers.
  • As indicated by the writing on its blade, Piggsy's chainsaw was manufactured by the "Tennant" tool company, which's a reference to the game's Lead Animator, Mark Tennant.
