He's egging you on, Remy. You are much too important to be caught up in all of this. Is the situation unfortunate? Of course it is. But nothing he is doing changes anything. Let Sal handle it.
~ Olivia Marcano to Remy Duvall.
The first time I saw Lucio, he looked so handsome. Dashing even. He wore the finest suits, drove the best cars... There was always something terribly romantic about all of this." {Lincoln retorts that robbery and doing harm unto others has no romance at all} "Well, maybe not. But it certainly was exciting".
~ Olivia to Lincoln Clay.

Olivia Marcano (née Grady) is a major antagonist in the 2016 video game Mafia III.

She is a caporegime of the Marcano crime family, having married into the family from Sal's brother, Lucio, and taking his position after his death. In 1968, Olivia would fight against Lincoln Clay who was on his crusade to destroy the crime family. When Clay successfully subdued and confronted her, he could not bring himself to kill her as she was a woman. She was found by the authorities and admitted to a hospital. However, she was covertly murdered by her nephew Giorgi shortly into her hospital stay.

She was voiced by Erin Matthews.

Biography[]

Background[]

Olivia Grady was born in 1931 to unnamed parents, and lived as an Southern belle for most of her life, arguably brought up in that manner. Wanting to escape from her idle life, Olivia would meet Lucio Marcano, who was a pimp and member of the Marcano crime family. Despite her parents despising Lucio's profession, Olivia decided to marry Lucio due to wanting his thrill-seeking life, and the two wedded in 1949. She would enjoy the criminal lifestyle that he was brought into, and got involved with Marcano's business by partaking in drug use, driving fast cars, and dealing with weaponry. In addition, Olivia became a well known socialite in the city, and befriended Remy Duvall, a radio personality and leader of the Southern Union. Her acquaintance with Duvall was apparently one that had been for years, as one time on his radio show said he had photographs of the two of them at a cotillion. Another radio show of his was where he announced his Saturday night plans, saying he was giving up a night of playing cards with Olivia to host a banquet for a bunch of men from New Bordeaux who had recently returned from the war.

In 1962, Lucio was found dead, having his throat slashed and it was blamed by unidentified prostitutes. However, it's implied that Olivia had her husband killed so she could take over his operations in the Frisco Fields with Duvall. Despite the death of her husband, Olivia took his place as a capo in the crime family, and continued to spread her influence in the city. In a flashforward to 1971, CIA agent John Donovan, who helped Lincoln wage his war of crime, was made to testify before the Senate. According to Senator Blake, Olivia had had more money than her brother-in-law Sal, accounting estimates believed to be double or triple than his. Some of her money was indeed dirty, such as hiring Bobby Bastian, a discredited medical doctor, to be her racket boss making PCP, which in turn would get sold to bored housewives in Frisco Fields under the medicine show routine of being a no-effort weight loss drug. However, it was believed most of Olivia's money was clean. With no need to sustain herself through honest work, Olivia used the dirty money as "icing on the cake"; the true job satisfaction in being a Mafiosa {feminine mobster}.

By the time the ladies were hooked, they were too dependent on PCP to report this to the authorities. Olivia also had a sinister side that rivaled her brother-in-laws Tommy and Lou; she also oversaw a human trafficking network managed by Chester Moreau, where the Southern Union would smuggle immigrants, particularly those from Caribbean Basin nations such as Haiti, into the States to be sold as slaves to the rich people of Louisiana. Other sources of illegal income came indirectly from her lieutenant Enzo Conti who ran the industrial area of Barclay Mills and had garbage and gunrunning rackets overseen respectively by Paul Simmons and Peter Santini. Simmons and Santini kicked up to Enzo Conti, who in turn kicked up to Olivia.

Mafia III[]

By 1968, Olivia was keeping tabs on Duvall, as her brother-in-law Sal was masterminding a conspiracy to build a casino. During this time, casinos were illegal outside of Nevada, and Sal enlisted his three capos to oversee three hurdles he needed to overcome to make the casino a reality: money, real estate, and political clout. Sal brought Remy in on the conspiracy, as he owned land in North Lake, where the casino was to be erected. Olivia and Remy had created a paper trail to help protect themselves in case the casino fell through. What Remy did not know was that Sal also ordered Olivia to keep a close eye on Remy, as Sal did not want the landowner getting in trouble. Remy became angered when Lincoln Clay started to take over Frisco Fields. Olivia attempts to calm Remy, saying that he should lay low and that Sal's men will kill Clay.

Remy then retorts that he no longer cares about their partnership when their way of life is under attack, and musters the Southern Union to march into Delray Hollow and start a conflagration. This leads to Remy's doom, as Clay attacks the Southern Union during a speech and ends up both crucifying and immolating Remy to a burning cross. Remy ended up causing problems for Olivia and Sal even after his death, as he bequeathed his entire estate to Stephen DeGarmo, his nephew. Olivia says that six months earlier Remy revised his will, but did not sign. As a business partner of his, she has the authority to contest the will. Sal snarls that that sounds like "a lawyer's wet dream" and he does not have the time nor money to fight it in the courts. He tells Olivia to find another way, to which she replies where they will convince Mr. Degarmo to sign over the rights to the land in exchange for a cut of the casino's profits. Sal agrees to that, then orders Olivia to kill Degarmo the moment after he signs. Mrs. Marcano hosts Remy's wake at the Retrousse Yacht Club, while her men abduct Stephen Degarmo. When he refuses to sign the papers, Olivia orders her men to torture him until he gives in. During the wake, Lincoln impersonates a yacht club employee and spikes the drinks with psychedelics to confront Olivia without reinforcements. While he gets to Olivia, not all partook of the spiked wine, as Lincoln must fight some sober hoods.

Olivia and her men attempt to kill Lincoln when he arrives, but is she is wounded from a gunshot wound while her subordinates are killed. She then tells Lincoln that she was into the criminal life due to liking the thrill, and informs him of DeGarmo's whereabouts before he leaves the area. When she asks how come he is not going to kill her, Lincoln says she is not worth the trouble. Olivia survived the incident and was sent to the hospital to recover, but she was murdered by Giorgi on Sal's orders.

Post-mortem scenes

Dependent on which order Olivia dies, a cutscene will play. Also, the following sitdown, where it is decided which underboss controls Frisco Fields, will having Lincoln saying that even though he is the chief suspect, he swears before God he did not murder Olivia Marcano, but suspects she does not have much longer to live.

First Capo Killed[]

Giorgi walks in to Sal's office, where Sal asks if Olivia is dead. Giorgi replies in the affirmative. Sal chuckles and asks if his son hired a hitman. Giorgi replies in the negative, saying he killed his aunt himself, "slicing her ear to ear just like you wanted". Sal then asks if Giorgi has succeeded at hunting Stephen DeGarmo, and Giorgi replies in the negative to that, saying he has been tearing through the city, but it seems DeGarmo just vanished into thin air. Sal is now in a lousy mood, saying the loss of the land is going to set back the casino plans, and he does not know he will afford the legal fees to contest the will, let alone possible charges of kidnapping, intimidation, and assault against Stephen DeGarmo. Giorgi suggests bringing in Leo Galante, but Sal disagrees, saying that if that is done, Galante will expect a cut of the casino's profits, and the whole point was to get out under the Commission. Giorgi says they will think of something, and Sal orders him out of the office, saying he needs to make a telephone call. Giorgi prepares to leave, but before doing so remarks "At least we do not need to worry about kicking up to Remy Duvall with the casino now". Sal thinks that was a joke in poor taste. Once Giorgi is out of earshot, Leo picks up the phone and says "Leo, how the fuck are you?"

Second Capo Killed[]

Giorgi and Nino Santangelo walk into Sal's office. Sal asks if Olivia is dead. Giorgi replies in the affirmative. Sal asks if he hired a hitman. Giorgi replies in the negative, saying he himself sliced his aunt "ear to ear just like you wanted". Sal chuckles and praises his son, then tells Giorgi to leave as he has other business to attend to. Giorgi promptly departs the office, and Nino Santangelo takes a seat. Sal says that Giorgi has been selling heroin behind his back, and that Santangelo must be the heroin kingpin who has been supplying his son. Sal explains his reluctance to endorse his son's racket, saying he never wanted heroin in the city as it makes people do crazy things, then pouring himself a drink and saying "Bourbon?", offering a drink to Nino. Santangelo declines, saying he does not drink alcohol. Sal explains that he has just lost a lucrative piece of real estate. Santangelo interrupts, saying "You want my money".

Sal explains he is building a casino, and now he has to focus on red tape and legal fees. Santangelo interrupts again, saying "We both know the reason why I am here, I want the next words out of your mouth to be 'I want your money'. Say those words, please." Sal says "All right...I want your money." Santangelo smirks and says "Good, we have a deal. I will sell my heroin freely and you will not interfere in any way." Sal grudgingly agrees, and Nino Santangelo adds "In exchange, you will have my financial support." Santangelo gets ready to leave, but then hesitates, asking "Would you like anything else?" Sal talks about the man who attacked Remy Duvall and Olivia, and Santangelo says "You also want me to kill Lincoln Clay, the $nugger% who did this?" Sal replies in the affirmative, and Santangelo laughs, remarking "I will do that as well, and for free, because I really like killing the nuggers."

Third Capo Killed[]

Giorgi walks into Sal's office and announces his aunt Olivia is dead. Sal asks if he hired anyone and Giorgi says no, saying he did the job himself, slicing her ear to ear like Sal wanted. Sal then remarks "Welp, my son, we are fucked." Giorgi wonders why his father would make a statement like that and Sal's mood then becomes angry, saying if Giorgi shot Lincoln Clay that night at Sammy's, none of this would be happening. Giorgi protests that he did shoot Lincoln Clay, to which his father responds "Once, you shot him once!" Sal says the reason why they are fucked is that he has called in every favor and has exhausted every line of credit he could think of, but none of it has made a difference, as he is now "leveraged out the ass".

With all his capos dead and lieutenants gone, the two of them are alone and powerless. Sal warns that they can no longer scare the people and "every lowlife ball of piss" in New Bordeaux "smells blood in the water", and that they would step over their own grandmothers to clip them as they would have bragging rights about being the guy who killed Don Marcano. Sal is aware that he would not last ten minutes on the streets. Giorgi suggests salvaging whatever assets they can and using the cash to pay whatever men remain and have them meet up at the Paradiso Hotel & Casino. Sal chuckles, saying he is glad Giorgi can finally use his brain. When Lincoln Clay shows up to North Lake, they will plant him in the ground next to them.

Trivia[]

  • She is the only woman who holds a position of power in the Marcano crime family.
  • It is revealed that Lincoln refused to kill a woman (unless his life was threatened) because of latent "Southern gentleman" qualities. After leaving Olivia, a cutscene plays with Donovan testifying before the Senate that when Lincoln was in Vietnam, a native woman in a bar killed one of his fellow soldiers with an improvised explosive, but Lincoln held back two Marines from beating her to death, demanding that she be remanded to the Navy shore patrol. Donovan states "if Lincoln refused to let that native piece of trash get killed, no way would he do so with Olivia Marcano".
  • Two other women Lincoln may encounter in the game are Cassandra and Bonnie Harless. Cassandra may be encountered if she believes Lincoln has ignored her and her gang in what is known as a "betrayal mission", and Bonnie Harless is encountered out of revenge and to eradicate the Ensanglante, her cult. However, the encounter with Olivia is necessary to win the game, while the others are optional fights.
  • Olivia and Lucio Marcano died in the exact same manner; by having their throats slit.
  • Although never expressly stated in the game, it was strongly suggested Sal ordered Olivia's death as he finally deduced she had ordered Lucio's death. Olivia's demise of having a slit throat, which was how her husband was murdered, lends credence to this hypothesis. Yet another theory was that Giorgi murdered her (on Sal's orders) that given her failure to protect Remy and intimidate Remy's nephew, she had outlived her usefulness to the Marcano crime family and was executed for her failure. Giorgi's remark of "I slit her throat ear to ear, just like you wanted" is more suggestive of the first theory.
  • After Olivia dies, a news report can be heard where it is announced that she was sent to emergency surgery and died on the operating table.
  • It was also implied that Olivia had been having sexual relations with Remy Duvall after her husband's death, as she engages in flirty banter with Remy while a guest on his radio show.
