The Navajo Coyote was a monster from Marvel comics and an enemy of Wolverine - it is based upon the mythology of the Skinwalkers.
History
At some point in the 19th Century, white armed settlers attacked a small Navajo community. All but one child were killed in the massacre. In mourning but enraged, the boy prayed to the Navajo spirit god known as the Coyote, seeking protection and revenge. The Coyote offered revenge upon the invaders when they would thirst. The boy then slid into the disemboweled carcass of a coyote.
The boy was encased in the coyote carcass, which mutated into a gigantic form, and became buried upright several meters into the ground.
Many years later, guided by the water dowser Dina Wolkow, local white villagers were searching for a fresh groundwater supply and were drawn to the spot where the coyote beast lay buried. The head revealed, the creature bellowed a roar that permanently deafened the group of four until the diggers were able to bury it again. All but Dina died a few days later. Decades later, the local water had dried up again and a geologist expedition drilled at the same site. This let loose the beast, which tore up the drilling team and killed many people in the small town of Roamer, leaving considerable destruction in its wake and the surviving townsfolk in terror.
Wolverine wandered into Roamer to find it almost empty. He briefly smelled roadkill just before the coyote beast's roar destroyed his hearing. The creature smashed Wolverine through buildings, slashing at him, until Wolverine stabbed back. The beast retreated and Wolverine found out more about it from the town sheriff, who dubbed the creature the Navajo Coyote, and Dina Wolkow. Wolverine found and attacked the creature, but was kicked far away by its hind legs. The brutal fight continued until Wolverine's claws slashed the side of the malformed coyote, revealing the Navajo boy inside. He motioned to roar but had his throat pierced by Wolverine. He then threw his blood into the mutant hero's eyes, providing a spirit vision that revealed the Navajo boy's past. Emphasizing to the boy that the past was over and punishing the present was wrong, yet also recognizing no common tongue, Wolverine believed the boy understood as he killed him. Behind him, the spirit of the boy faded away.
