~ Mok Swagger explaining "right" and "wrong" to Zip.

Mok Swagger, also known as Mok the Magic Man, but just simply known as Mok, is the main antagonist of the Canadian 1983 animated musical film Rock & Rule. He is a famous musician who seeks to destroy his fans by unleashing a otherworldly being for a slight decline in popularity. He is the former idol of Angel and archenemy of both her and Omar. He is usually accompanied by his minions and security guards, the Schlepper Brothers.

He was voiced by the late Don Francks (who also voiced Doctor Claw in Inspector Gadget, Kybo Ren in Star Wars: Droids- the Adventures of C3P0 & R2D2, Sabretooth in X-Men: The Animated Series, Gmork in The Neverending Story's animated series, Dr. Greed in Journey to the Center of the Earth and D. D. Kovet in An Angel for Christmas). His singing voice was provided by the late Lou Reed (who also voiced Emperor Maltazard in the Arthur and the Invisibles sequels), and Iggy Pop (who also portrayed The Demon in the same film, Curve in The Crow: City of Angels, Darkos in Arthur 3: The War of the Two Worlds and the Caterpillar in Once Upon a Time in Wonderland).

Biography[]

In Search of the One Voice[]

While Mok is in search of the "one voice" needed to summon a demon from another dimension, he hears Angel sing while her band performs in a club and realizes that she is the voice he needs. Although initially unaware of Mok's true intentions, she refuses to abandon her band despite his prodding insistence. Unwilling to take no for an answer, Mok kidnaps her and flies away with her in his blimp to Nuke York (the post-apocalyptic version of New York City) to perform the concert that will summon the demon. Omar, Dizzy, and Stretch follow in a stolen police car to rescue their friend.

Meanwhile, Angel attempts to escape in the process learning of Mok's plans, and that his computer's analysis seems to indicate that there is "no one" capable of stopping him. Mok soon recaptures Angel and uses an impersonator to fool Omar into thinking that she is spurning him willingly. To manipulate Angel, Mok then captures the band and tortures them in order to compel her to agree to his demands for their release, but not before brainwashing them to ensure that they will not interfere further.

Revealing his True Nature[]

After Omar hurts his feeling, Mok reveals his true nature. When Mok's first concert attempt at "Carnage Hall" proves a fiasco due to an insufficient electrical supply, he is advised to relocate the summoning to Ohmtown, where the power plant has access to unlimited energy.

During that second concert, there is a power surge that requires sudden draining into the town's electrical grid, causing overloads which both darken the city and shock Omar and his friends out of their stupor. Omar is still embittered by Mok's earlier deception, so he initially refuses to help Dizzy and Stretch try to stop the concert. However, he finally decides to trust Angel.

All three make their way to the event. However, they are unable to prevent the demonic summoning, only freeing Angel from her restraints after it is too late. The invoked demon starts consuming members of the audience and moves to attack Omar, who is saved thanks to the self-sacrificing heroism of one of Mok's simple-minded minions Zip.

Battle and Defeat[]

Desperately, Angel tries singing to force the demon's dimensional retreat. However, her voice alone has no effect. Omar begins to sing in harmony with Angel, driving the demon back through the portal. Mok realizes too late that his computer's reference to "no one" did not mean that an effective individual did not exist, but that more than one person was required to activate the counterspell. As he ineffectually scrambles to stop the duo's interference, Toad, the brother of the fallen Zip, throws him into the portal and finally destroy his legacies.

His fate after being thrown into the portal, which sealed itself after he fell into it, is unknown.

Personality[]

I find Lou Reed's song ('My Name Is Mok, Thanks A Lot') really sums up the whole character of Mok. He's totally obsessed with himself, he thinks of no one but himself. He thinks he's the greatest thing in rock and roll and, as soon as his popularity stops, he becomes paranoid. Two empty seats at a concert just flip him out. He's got sort of a split personality. He has a tendency to be so cool and above everybody, and then - snap! - a flash of anger.
~ Mok's lead animator, Robin Budd, on his personality.

Mok was known for being very cold, ruthless, egomaniacal and decadent. He is a dishonest, charismatic, manipulative and treacherous music performer who will stop at nothing to get what he wants, even if he has to resort to threats or intimidation. One of his most discreditable and prejudicial plans is when he occasionally harms Omar and the rest of the band.

His defining trait is his massive narcissism, only caring for himself and believing himself to be well-above others, he is also shown to be very petty as he was willing to summon a demon to kill his fans all because he felt that they didn't appreciate him enough. He is also highly abusive as he smacks around his minions several times throughout the movie.

Trivia[]

  • Mok described himself as "the power Sodom used on Lot".
  • He is based on and named after Mick Jagger.
  • The late David Bowie, Tim Curry, the late Michael Jackson, Mick Jagger, and Sting were all considered for the role of Mok. However, the budget could not afford them, but Mok is based on all of them (except for Tim Curry). Ultimately, the late Don Francks was cast as the voice of Mok instead.
