|“||Sonofabitch! Do you know who I am? I'm Moe Greene! I made my bones when you were going out with cheerleaders!||„|
|~ Moe Greene|
Moe Greene is the secondary antagonist from the movie and novel The Godfather. He was a mobster who ran Las Vegas based casinos.
At a young age, Greene became associated with Hyman Roth. Greene found a small town called Las Vegas in the Nevada desert that he developed into the center of a gambling empire.
Sonny Corleone sent his brother Fredo to Las Vegas to learn the casino business from Greene. Fredo soon became more interested in womanizing than following Greene's orders; the business suffered because Fresno was "banging cocktail waitresses two at a time", to the point that no one could get a drink. Greene lost his temper with Fredo and slapped him around in public.
When Michael Corleone took over the Corleone Family from his father Vito, he decided to move the family to Las Vegas and to buy Greene out. Greene was not happy with this, and refused. When Fredo attempted to defend Greene, Michael coldly told him to never take sides against the family again.
After Vito Corleone died, Michael arranged to have Greene killed. He sent one of his assassins to one of Greene's casinos, where Greene was getting a massage; the assassin shot him through the eye.
- The character of Moe Greene was portrayed by the late Alex Rocco (1936-2015).
- In the novel Moe Greene was killed by Al Neri, who "made his bones" by carrying out this hit. Neri then killed Emilio Barzini upon his return from Vegas. In the movie it was an anonymous gunman who killed Greene, with Neri killing Barzini while disguised as a police officer.
- Greene was based on Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel.
