~ Mina redeeming herself by standing up to Trina for leaving her behind to be killed by a meteor. |
Bernadette "Mina" Beff is the on/off secondary antagonist of the Fresh TV/Teletoon animated series Grojband.
She is the best friend of Trina Riffin who often helps her out in her evil plots—mostly doing it out of fear due to Trina being mean to everybody around her and treating Mina as little more than her "Cinderella" instead of as a friend, though she has been social with Trina's younger brother Corey and his friends at times. She is also the older sister of Carrie Beff, who is Corey's gender-opposite doppelgänger.
She was voiced by Denise Oliver.
Biography[]
Mina is sixteen years old. She is Trina's best friend in fact, her only friend. Trina is very rude and abusive to Mina and treats her like a slave. Mina's original name was Bernadette, but Trina forced her to have her name legally changed to Mina so their names would rhyme. Although Mina is always getting stepped on by the bossy Trina, she enjoys the "rub-off" popularity she gets for being by her side. In the episode "Space Jammin'," it was revealed that Carrie is Mina's little sister. Although it has never been seen much in the show, this means that they must have a strong relationship with each other, unlike Corey and Trina. Carrie is fourteen, while Mina is only sixteen.
In the episode "A Knight to Remember", the mystical, annual Bonkerton Comet passed over Peaceville, unleashing a bright flash which swapped Mina and Trina's personalities, making the former bratty and the latter an obedient slave. As part of a LARP festival, Mina took the role of a princess named Prettina with Trina as her right-hand troll servant named Gucky. When Grojband showed up at the festival to perform a gig, Mina—upset that the band isn't using medieval-themed instruments—orders them to be "executed", before deciding to have them battle against Nick Mallory (playing the role of a knight known as Sir Nick of Mallory) to win her favor. Then, the comet flashes again, unleashing an actual gigantic knight known as Smasheus, sending the LARPers into a panic; Mina demanded her subjects to stop it, including Nick, who was unable to run because of his heavy suit of armor, until he was saved by Trina, which infuriated the bossy princess for going out of character. It wasn't until Corey reminded Mina that she and Trina will revert back to normal once the comet leaves, sending her into Diary Mode (similar to Trina's), enabling Grojband to perform their song and defeat Smasheus. Mina thanked the band for saving her kingdom, but after the comet has left, she and Trina went back to their normal selves, with the latter giving chase after having enough of bearing the former's brunt.
In the episode "Hear Us Rock, Part 2", Mina became fed up with being pushed around and bullied by Trina, especially after the latter betrayed her by leaving her on Earth so she could save herself and her crush Nick Mallory (held captive against his will) from being killed by an incoming meteor. The betrayal infuriated Mina enough to finally team up with an alien orb named T'ORB, who was also betrayed by his friends, to help return Grojband's instruments that Trina threw out earlier to prevent them from destroying the meteor. Upon arriving at the meteor with T'ORB and the instruments, Mina finally stood up to Trina and took charge, calling her out for leaving her behind to be killed by the meteor just so she could have Nick all to herself. It is unknown if this relationship will continue on like this in the second season of Grojband or if Trina will go back to being the one on top after this, although it is possible Mina will no longer remain Trina's friend because of her betrayal and abusiveness.
Appearance[]
Mina has dark, teal, blue hair, brown eyes, and black, cat-eyed spectacles. She wears an orange turtleneck sweater, with dark, brownish, green shorts, along with white knee socks and black, short-heeled primsolls.
Personality[]
Mina is a nice, shy, and timid girl who is loyal to Trina and diligently does whatever she commands. According to the series creators, she and Trina genuinely care about each other (having been friends since kindergarten) and Mina endures all Trina's abuse in hopes that Trina will one day go back to being the nice person she used to be.
Despite assisting her cruel, condescending, and narcissistic best friend in her schemes, whether it involves sabotaging Grojband or getting Nick Mallory's attention, Mina is actually a really nice and selfless girl who is always friendly to anyone no matter who they are and what they do. She seems to be friends with Trina and at the same time, is also cordial with her enemies, even occasionally helping out Corey, despite helping his older sister sabotage his band. Mina also holds a strong sibling bond to her younger sister Carrie—to the point where she even attended her gig to hear her band perform and both of them gave each other a "fump" (fist bump/high five).
She doesn't seem to care when she gets abused and hurt, as mostly seen when it shows how terribly Trina hurts her, which sometimes even make her too afraid to speak out, yet she nevertheless continues to respect and remain friendly to everyone in her surroundings. However, this does not undermine her capability to express anger and hostility, demonstrated when she finally berated Trina for constantly abusing her and selfishly leaving her behind to die just so she could be Nick's girlfriend. Additionally, Mina is sympathetic and takes pity of T'ORB after learning that he was also betrayed by his orb friends, motivating the two to help Grojband save the world from a meteor sent by the orbs.
Mina is also very intelligent and great at math, and is a super-nerd who is part of the nerd club at Elementary High, even bonding with Trina when she went by her Trigonometrina persona.

Trivia[]
- Although not mentioned in the show, Mina's name was originally "Bernadette" until she became friends with Trina, who forced her to legally change it to Mina so that their names would rhyme.
- It is possible that Carrie calls Mina by her real name whenever she is not around Trina since the latter also displays contempt towards the former, The Newmans (Grojband's doppelgänger and rival band), and her sisterly bond with Mina.
- Her surname is based on the acronym B.F.F. (Best Friends Forever) due to being Trina's best friend.
- It is revealed in the episode "Hologroj" that Mina has a friendship contract which obligates her to agree with anything that Trina demands, confirming their friendship is more so out of pragmatism (from Trina's point of view) than it is out of loyalty and mutual respect.
- This is evident in most episodes of Grojband prior to "Hear Us Rock, Part 2" where Mina finally overcomes Trina's brutality.
- Mina's personality is very similar to that of Kitty Ko from Sidekick, another show created by Todd Kauffman. Plus, Mina and Kitty both share the same voice actress, Denise Oliver.
- Similar to Velma Dinkley from the Scooby-Doo franchise, Mina has shoulder-length hair and also wears glasses and an orange turtleneck.
- She shares a few similarities with Beth from Total Drama, since both wear glasses, are abused by the antagonist of their respective show, and both eventually stood up to their abuser (in Mina's case Trina; in Beth's case Heather).
- Her surname even sounds similar to "Beth".
- Coincidentally, both characters originate from shows made by Fresh TV, which also aired on Cartoon Network.
- Mina shares some similarities with Waylon Smithers, Mr. Smee, and Jeff Fungus, in which all four of them are the bespectacled, affable, and incompetent servants to their respective, more intelligent and villainous leader, who would more often than not abuse and look down upon them.
- Like Trina, she also has a crush on Nick Mallory.
