Villain Overview

You're not in Kansas anymore. You're on Pandora, ladies and gentlemen. Respect that fact, every second of every day. If there is a hell, you might wanna go there for some R & R after a tour on Pandora. Out there beyond that fence, every living thing that crawls, flies, or squats in the mud wants to kill you and eat your eyes for jujubes. We have an indigenous population of humanoids called the Na'vi. They're fond of arrows dipped in a neurotoxin that'll stop your heart in one minute and they have bones reinforced with naturally occurring carbon fiber. They are very hard to kill. As head of security, it is my job to keep you alive. I will not succeed. Not with all of you. If you wish to survive, you need to cultivate a strong mental attitude. You've got to obey the rules. Pandora rules.
~ Quaritch addressing the new arrivals.
Quaritch: Is that you, Mrs. Sully? I recognized your callin' card. Why don't you come on out, Mrs. Sully? You and I, we got some unfinished business.
Neytiri: Demon! I will kill you as many times as I have to!
~ Quaritch as a Recombinant to Neytiri, recognizing her arrow, causing her to remember and threaten him.
Quaritch: You're not leaving, are you, Jake? Knowing I'm out there? Knowing that I'll never stop? I'm coming for you and when I do, I'll kill your whole family.
Jake: Then lets get it done.
~ Quaritch swears he will never give up on his revenge, provoking Jake to fight him for the second time.

Colonel Miles Quaritch is the main antagonist of James Cameron's Avatar franchise.

He is the brutal and machiavellian head of the RDA (Resources Development Administration) corporation's security detail who has no qualms with destroying Pandora's wildlife and slaughtering its inhabitants so that the RDA can mine the precious unobtanium reserves located under the planet's surface. The cruelty he displays towards the Na'vi, the native sapient species of Pandora, leads Jake Sully, his subordinate and spy in the RDA's Avatar Program, to become disillusioned with his methods and eventually betray him for the Na'vi, turning the two of them into bitter archenemies. Following Jake's betrayal, he leads an assault on the Tree of Souls, during which he is killed by Neytiri. It is also around this point in time that Quaritch fathers a son named Miles Socorro, who is adopted by the Na'vi after they successfully force the humans to leave Pandora and return to Earth.

Fourteen years later, Quaritch is reborn as a Recombinant (Recom), military avatars implanted with the minds and memories of deceased RDA marines, and chosen as the commander of the 1st Recom Squad. He is also tasked with hunting down and killing Jake Sully for his role as the leader of the Na'vi insurgency, a mission that he gladly accepts due to his desire for revenge against Jake and Neytiri for killing his original human self. While trying to track down Jake in the jungles of Pandora, Quaritch encounters Spider, now a teenager, and begins to bond with him after recognizing him as the son of his human counterpart. However, despite his best efforts, Quaritch ultimately fails to accomplish his given directive and is forced to return home to Bridgehead City in defeat after every single member of his Recom squad, except for his lieutenant, Corporal Lyle Wainfleet, is killed in battle by the Na'vi.

He is portrayed by Stephen Lang, who also played Increase Mather in the TV series Salem, Norman Nordstrom in Don't Breathe, Percy "King" Dimplewade in The Nut Job, The Party Crasher in The Hard Way, Khalar Zym in Conan the Barbarian, Waldo in Into the Badlands and Shrike in Mortal Engines.

Personality[]

I'll be nice, once...then I won't.
~ Miles Quaritch.

Miles Quaritch looked and acted like a lifelong military man. He wore his hair short and was covered with battle scars, most notably a trio of claw marks on the side of his head which he sustained during his time on Pandora. He only respected brute force and dominance, and showed little respect for the Na'vi or their home. He destroyed their Hometree, killing numerous Na'vi in the process, without hesitation - seeing it as merely a mission and remained mostly indifferent about the destruction.

His long-running military career was representative of his personality. He regularly worked out to offset the low gravity on Pandora so he did not get soft. He was in outstanding physical condition, despite being middle-aged, and he was known to leave his exopack back in his base for short periods when entering combat in the poisonous atmosphere of Pandora when he felt the situation demanded it. An expert with his AMP suit, he was still familiar with combat techniques as demonstrated by his marksmanship, hand-to-hand and melee combat skills; he can even use his knife in combat skills.

Despite being a fierce, merciless, bloodthirsty and aggressive warrior than rest of RDA's soldiers and troopers even his loyalty men, Quaritch claimed to "take care of his own" and appeared to have good relations with his men - who all seemed to respect him as an authoritative leader. However, he also acknowledged during an initial debriefing that he would be unable to help all of those under his command. He also shows great admiration for the dedication Jake Sully showed by willing to go covert with the Na'vi people and rewarded him greatly by promising him an operation that would give Jake his legs back.

Quaritch was also a charismatic and persuasive military leader, as shown by the way when he inspired his troops during the meeting before the assault on the Tree of Souls.

He hurt or kill anyone who betrayed him and RDA or picking up fight on him even worst he even threaten Parker Selfridge, Mick Scoresby others RDA employees, Soldiers, Workers, Scientist, and traitors if they don't do that he say to them, as much he presses every single button on Dragon Assault Ship to Trudy until he blast her while she inside of Aerospatiale SA-2 Samson when he got almost shot his face by Trudy, he possibly kill his other mans for less

He shows respect to Neytiri because she is more threaten than Quaritch while he is taking Kiri as hostage but he let go Kiri he knows Neytiri of his worthy opponent as she warrior more than Quaritch

Appearance[]

As a human, Quaritch is a fifty year old man in excellent physical condition, due to his intense muscular training. He has short gray hair, blue eyes and scars down his right arm but his most distinctive features are his eagle tattoo on his left shoulder and the three claw marks running down his right temple to his eyebrow.

As a Recom, Quaritch has the appearance of a full-fledged Na'vi, except for having retained his eyebrows and his five fingers and toes, the Na'vi naturally having none. He also retained his eagle tattoo. In this guise, Quaritch now has golden eyes, black hair, pointed ears, blue skin with lighter undertone markings, a tail, a set of hair-like nerve endings sticking up from the back of his head, and is now physically younger than he was in his human body.

Biography[]

Human[]

Miles Quaritch was the headstrong leader of the RDA security force. The government has gone through even more searches of valuable resources in the year 2154. He sent Marines and soldiers to the planet Pandora. In the universe of the movie, humans have advanced technology allowing them to even travel farther into space, even outside the solar system, despite not reaching the level of faster-than-light yet. They find Unobtainium, a valuable resource costing $20 million per kilogram, which is found only on Pandora, the home planet of blue-skinned humanoid aliens called the Na'vi who are taller than the humans.

Two years ago, Quaritch revealed the company's actual hostility toward Na'vi by tries to wipe out Na'vi children whom responsible for setting one of their bulldozer ablaze and destroyed Grace's school for Na'vis. Though Grace managed to save most of the children, Sylwanin and few children were killed during the gunfire and thus, Quaritch had the school closed for good.

One of the marines who came to Pandora was Jake Sully, whose legs were paralyzed. His organization created scientific technology that allowed troops to go into new bodies mixed with human DNA and Na'vi DNA called Avatars (which is what the movie is named after). He ordered Jake Sully, female scientist Grace Augustine, and xenoanthropologist Norm Spellman into the Avatar operation, where Quaritch planned the three to trick the Na'vi to move out of the area where Unobtainium is found. Quaritch also promised to have Jake's legs restored should he gather intel to him.

However, Jake, Grace, and Norm believed that stealing the land of the Na'vi was wrong, and tried to persuade the RDA to close the operation, but RDA's president Parker Selfridge had no feelings for the Na'vi, ordering almost all of his troops using large helicopter-like vehicles to destroy the Hometree of where the Na'vi clan, the Omayatica, lived when he and Quaritch learned from one of Quaritch soldiers Lyle Wainfleet that the Omaticaya had destroyed their bulldozers to prevent them from cut down the jungle. Quaritch later imprisoned Sully, Augustine, and Spellman into a cell chamber after releasing them from the Avatar system chambers. Later, two other humans named Trudy and Dr. Max Patel also decided to help the Na'vi by releasing the three in the cell chamber and escaped in one of the flying helicopter-like vehicles. Miles Quaritch noticed this and used a gun trying to shoot them, but was only successful at shooting Grace Augustine.

Grace slowly died, which left Jake, Norm and Trudy left, while Max stayed at the home base where the humans had landed their vehicles on Pandora. Jake later formed an alliance with the other Na'vi, along with the leader's daughter, Ney'tiri. The next day, Quaritch and all of the soldiers came up ready for the war.

A conflict/war started between the RDA human squad and the Na'vi clans. The RDA squad had AMP suits that soldiers control with a large gun, giant flying vehicles that shoot missiles, several soldiers were on the ground with guns and a few giant flying battleship vehicles. The Na'vi clans rode on bird-like animals called Banshees, including a giant bird-like animal named Toruk Macto, horse-like animals named Direhorses, and were prepared with bows and arrows. While Quaritch and his soldiers managed to kill off Trudy and Tsu'Tey, one of the Na'vi, all of the soldiers were killed off except for Quaritch. He was on a giant flying battleship, which Jake destroyed by destructing the ship's flying generator, despite Quaritch's best efforts to stop him. Quaritch then quickly went onto an AMP suit and jumped out of the battleship before it crashed, saving himself. Now alone, he advanced to the Tree of Souls to destroy it himself once and for all.

Neytiri attacked and fought Quaritch by dispatching a giant panther-like animal called the Thanator. Quaritch lost his missile gun, but found a knife and quickly killed the Thanator by stabbing it with the knife. Before he could do the same to Neytiri, Jake came in his avatar body, declaring it all to be over and having him stand down.

Quaritch did not agree with the answer and attacks Jake with his knife, while Jake used a broken part of the missile gun to shield himself from the knife. An intense fight to the death erupts between the two marines, in which they appear evenly matched. Quaritch also lost the blade of the knife, the only weapon he had left. He then tries to destroy the avatar body system chambers to disable Jake in his avatar body but does not get the chance to when Jake almost stabs him with a knife at his right shoulder. Soon, Quaritch held Jake on his hair and was about to kill him in his Avatar body with the new knife.

However, Neytiri managed to aim two arrows at Quaritch, which killed him and caused his AMP suit to fall to the ground, ending with his menace and avenging the deaths of Grace, Trudy and all of the Na'vi who were killed by Quaritch and his soldiers. Jake and Neytiri united, with the Na'vi winning the war after Quaritch died. The RDA surrendered and returned to Earth, while Norm and Max also stayed on Pandora with Jake Sully, who had his consciousness transferred into his Avatar body permanently, proving that Quaritch was wrong when he told him that he would never be a Na'vi.

Recombinant[]

Around 14 years later with the RDA returning to Pandora, Miles dogtag scans allowed the RDA to make a Avatar clone of Quaritch. Under the request of him, he was allowed to have his iconic falcon tattoo on his top left-arm. Before his human self's death, he had a son, Miles "Spider" Socorro, with a woman named Paz Socorro, who was killed by the Navi during the assault at the Tree of Souls. Spider despises him for his actions.

During a mission, Quaritch comes across the skeletal remains of his human body and swears to make Jake and his family pay. His team comes across Jake's children eavesdropping them and attack them. Jake and Neytiri free them, but Spider is captured. Recognizing him as his son, Quaritch forces Spider to team him about the Na'vi culture.

When he learns Jake and his family retreated to the oceans of Pandora, Quaritch allies with a whaling vessel led by Mick Scoresby who were hunting tulkins for their brain enzymes in luring them out. Using brute force to interrogate the aquatic Na'vi and mercilessly killing several tulkins does he track down Jake after his children rescue Payakan the rogue tulkin who was being tracked by the whalers. Quaritch offers to spare his hostages if Jake surrendered himself.

However, the whalers are intercepted by Payakan damaging their main vessel, leading to a massive battle between the whalers and the Na'vi. Jake leads a successful attack against the whalers, resulting in the vessel sinking and killing a majority of the whalers, but his eldest son Neteyam is fatally wounded in the process. Once Jake manages to reach Quaritch, he holds Kiri hostage, taunting Jake for betraying and murdering his own kind. But Neytiri also holds Spider hostage, who Quaritch at first denies as his son, only to desist when Neytiri cuts Spider's chest.

Jake ultimately defeats Quaritch by strangling him to unconsciousness, letting his body sink into the water. Spider, however, choses to rescue his father and drags him out of the sunken vessel and onto land. Quaritch begs Spider to accompany him, hoping for a chance to reconcile and form a genuine bond with his son. Spider refuses, denouncing him for his cruelty and rejoins the Na'vi, leaving Quaritch alone to fly away on his Banshee to hatch his next scheme.

Quotes[]

Human form[]

This low gravity'll make you soft. You get soft, Pandora will shit you out dead with zero warning. I pulled your record, Corporal. Venezuela, that was some mean bush. Nothin' like this here though. You got some heart, kid, showing up in this neighborhood.
~ Quaritch commenting over Jake's paralysis.
A recon gyrene in an Avatar body...that's a potent mix! Gives me the goosebumps!
~ Quaritch commenting over Jake's new Na'vi avatar.
Son, I take care of my own. You get me what I need, I'll see to it that you get your legs back when you rotate home...your real legs.
~ Quaritch offering a deal with Jake.
You crossed the line.
~ Quaritch's last line before his friendship with Jake is over.
Everyone on this base, every one of you, is fighting for survival, and that's a fact. There's an aboriginal horde out there massing for an attack. Now, these orbital images tell me that the hostile's numbers have gone from a few hundred to well over two thousand in one day. And more are pourin' in. In a week's time, there could be 20,000 of 'em. At that point they will overrun our perimeter, but that's not gonna happen. Our only security lies in preemptive attack. We will fight terror with terror. The hostiles believe that this mountain territory is protected by their...deity. And when we destroy it, we will blast a crater in their racial memory so deep that they won't come within 1,000 clicks of this place ever again. And that too, is a fact.
~ Quaritch ordering for the destruction of the Tree of Souls.
Nothing's over while I'm breathing!
~ Quaritch to Jake, as Quartich continues to foolishly refuse to give up before their final fight.
Hey, Sully...how's it feel to betray your own race? You think you're one of them? Time to wake up!
~ Quaritch's vengeful words to Jake about betraying mankind.
You're a recom now, colonel. Loaded with my memories and my charm. What you won't remember is my death because it hasn't happened yet and it ain't gonna. Well, whatever happened, if you're any clone of mine, then you'll be looking for some payback and Jake Sully would be at the top of that list. Remember, kid, a Marine can't be defeated. Oh, you can kill us, but we'll just regroup in hell. Semper fi.
~ Quaritch's posthumous message to himself should he ever die and the Recombinant program is subsequently launched.

Avatar form[]

Show me your fingers. (Lo'ak gives him the middle finger) You're his, aren't you? (Lo'ak hisses) You're his, alright. Where is he?
~ Quaritch finds out Lo'ak is Jake's son.
Quaritch: Lyle? That you?
Wainfleet: Yes, sir. And Z-dog. And Fike.
Quaritch: Alright, lemme go. I'm alright.
~ Quaritch to Wainfleet after being revived into a Recom.
Quaritch: We're not in Kansas anymore. We're going to Pandora. Now...I know you're all asking yourselves the same question. Why so blue? [Everyone laughs] For our sins in our past life, we have been brought back in the form of our enemy. That gives us their size, their strength, their speed. And with our training, that's a pretty potent mix.
Wainfleet: We have a mission yet?
Quaritch: Indeed we do. Our mission is to hunt down and kill the leader of the Na'vi insurgency. The one they call Toruk Makto. Jake Sully.
~ Quaritch addressing his Recom Squad.
Quaritch: What's your name, kid?
Spider: Spider Socorro.
Quaritch: Miles?
Spider: Nobody calls me that.
Quaritch: Well, I'll be damned. I'd figured they sent you back to Earth.
Spider: Can't put babies in cryo, dipshit.
~ Quaritch meets his illegitimate son, Miles "Spider" Socorro for the first time.
Easy, tiger, easy. We good? Kid, you got heart. The science pukes leaned on you pretty hard, but you gave them nothing. I respect that. I thought you might want this. [Shows his dog tags] That's Colonel Miles Quaritch. Deceased. Killed in action. I'm not that man. But I do have his memories. Enough to know that, well, he wasn't always the best father. But that's not an apology. I'm not your father. Technically, you and I, we're nothing to each other. But I can help you. I can get you out of here. I'm not gonna ask you to betray Jake Sully. I know you'd never do that. You're loyal and I admire loyalty. Just ride along. Otherwise, I gotta give you back to the lab coats.
~ Quaritch offers Spider the opportunity not to be tortured any longer if he goes along with him.
I took you under my wing, Jake. You betrayed me. You killed your own. Good men, good women. I will not hesitate to execute your kid.
~ Quaritch threatens the lives of Jake's children, while berating Jake for betraying the human race.
Quaritch: You think I care about some kid? You're not mine. We not even the same species.
Neytiri: A son for a son. [Neytiri cuts Spider's torso] I cut. [Neytiri is about to kill Spider]
Quaritch: No! [Quaritch removes his knife from Kiri's throat]
~ Quaritch denies he cares about Spider as he threatens Kiri and Neytiri does the same with Spider, until he shows he really cares about his son at the last moment.
I owe you a death.
~ Quaritch to Neytiri.
Let's move out. Son, come with me.
~ Quaritch pleads with Spider to come with him, only for Spider to instead denounce his father before choosing to rejoin Jake and his family.

Trivia[]

  • Though Parker Selfridge is the head of the RDA on Pandora, Quaritch is the main antagonist of the first film - as he had bigger plans than anyone else and proved to be more far more ruthless than Selfridge ever was.
  • Quaritch serves as an allegory of the U.S. colonial ideology of Manifest Destiny, while the Na'vi serve as an allegory of the Native American tribes that opposed American expansion.
  • One of the main criticisms Avatar received was its many similarities with several movies, such as Dances with Wolves, where critics have compared Quaritch to Sergeant Bauer. Both wanted to conquer a native tribe on foreign lands (The Na'vi in Quaritch's case and the Sioux in Bauer's case). However, unlike Quaritch, who admired Jake Sully, Bauer took sadistic delight in tormenting John Dunbar.
  • It has been confirmed that Miles Quaritch will appear in all four sequels of Avatar. When his actor Stephen Lang was asked if and how his character would return in the future, he stated that "Nothing's over while I have DNA", which suggests that he may be revived through cloning. This was later confirmed to be true in The Way of Water where his DNA is used to clone him into a Recombinant.
  • His duel with Jake Sully is the ultimate display of the constant battle between human technology and mother nature, in which there is no decisive winner as both combatants were evenly matched and neither side actually defeated the other, as Quaritch only lost because Neytiri interfered.
  • Cyrus Temple's design seemed to be heavily influenced by Quaritch. In fact, both of their attitudes, the way they carry themselves, their body armor, and facial structures all have strong resemblances.
  • If Jake would've told the Na'vi to relocate peacefully before the RDA could attack, Quaritch would've sent him back to Earth to receive the expensive treatment that would restore the use of his legs. If Quaritch would've still chosen to attack the Na'vi, Dr. Grace Augustine and Norm Spellman would've been the ones to prevent it from happening instead of Jake.
  • His actor, Stephen Lang, has played other characters who have had experience with the military:
    • Major General George Pickett in the 1993 film Gettysburg.
    • General Stonewall Jackson in the 2003 prequel Gods and Generals, which was about the early days of the American Civil War. Also in the film, Stonewall even gives a speech to Confederate troops in a similar way Quaritch did in Avatar.
    • Elias T. Walker in the video game Call of Duty: Ghosts, who was a former U.S. Army Captain before being acting Commander of the Ghosts. Elias T. Walker was also the father of the protagonists, Logan and Hesh Walker in the game.
    • Norman Nordstrom in Don't Breathe, in which his character was a former U.S. Army veteran in the Gulf War who became blind during a shrapnel attack, and is now known as "The Blind Man" to the main characters of the film due to his talents in killing intruders in his house.
  • Since Stephen Lang stated that Miles could redeem himself in later installments it is possible on what would lead to his redemption is the RDA betraying him, since he was a man-made creation for them to do what they want him to do, furthermore he's got nothing else left for himself, as most of his comrades are gone and is on the brink of forever losing any attachment with his son, not only that but he does his work because he serves for mankind that he sees himself as one of, when he is no longer human anymore, not to mention that the humans have no concern over his wellbeing or safety.
  • In The Way of Water, Quaritch never kills anyone on his own unlike in the first film, although he does order Wainfleet to take down an Ilu to force the Ta'unui to cooperate and later orders the CetOps to attack the Tulkun herd near the Metkayina, causing the death of Ro'a and then her calf out of grief. Neteyam is also considered an indirect victim of Quaritch since he was mortally wounded by Wainfleet.
