Stop hand

And the Evil that was once vanquished shall rise anew. Wrapped in the guise of man, shall he walk amongst the innocent, and Terror shall consume they that dwell upon the Earth. The skies shall rain fire, and the seas will become as blood. The righteous shall fall before the wicked, and all of Creation shall tremble before the burning standards of Hell!
~ Mephisto's most famous quote.
I am eternal, creature. Hatred always survives.
~ Mephisto.
All worlds will fall before the burning standards of Hell. I have seen it.
~ Mephisto.
Cursed am I to lead an army of the blind. They do not perceive that the angels are fleeing this realm, and the ones they find are merely trapped or lost. A great change is upon us. Withdraw from the fields, my brothers. Some battles can only be won with words.
~ Mephisto after Worldstone's disappearance.

Dul'Mephistos, better known as Mephisto, is one of the main antagonists in the Diablo franchise. He is the oldest of the Prime Evils and the de-facto leader of the trio, as well as the embodiment of the Great Evils, the most ancient of the Prime Evils who reign over the infernal realm.

It was he who initiated the chain of events that culminated in the unleashing of Diablo upon the world, for it was his insidious manipulation of the Zakarum church, of which Archbishop Lazarus was a loyal follower, that spurred the cleric to journey to Khanduras and free the Lord of Terror from his captivity. He is also the father of Lilith.

In Diablo II, he was voiced by Paul Eiding, who also voiced Zeus from God of War. In Diablo IV, he was voiced by Steve Blum, who also voiced Blockbuster and Lady Arkham in Batman: The Telltale Series, as well Killer Croc and Sickle in the Arkhamverse. Outside DC comics media, Blum provided the voices of Orochimaru from Naruto, Starscream from Transformers: Prime, Amon from The Legend of Korra, and Ares from God of War.

Biography[]

Mephisto is wisest of the three Prime Evils, and also the first of the 7 great evils. Before banished, he and his brother manage to capture Izual and forces him to reveal everything about Worldstone. With this information, he formulate a plan; gain advantage of Belial and Azmodan's betrayal to go to Sanctuary.

After his soul and his brother's are banished to the mortal realm by the traitors Belial and Azmodan, he and his brothers are hunted down by the order of Horadrim. He is the first to be captured and is imprisoned in a Soulstone, which is then buried under the sands of the East, in a place where later was built the temple of the Zakarum and the city of Kurast.

Under his imprisonment, he twists the Soulstone and manages to corrupt all of the high council of the Zakarum. However, the leader of the Zakarum, Khalim, never gave up to the corruption of Mephisto and fought against his former comrades. Mephisto order them to kill Khalim and disembody his parts, scattering them on the jungle. Without any more obstacles, he spreads his evil influence over all Kurast, and the place soon become infested with monsters. The few who survived ran away and hid in the docks of Kurast, protected by a magic barrier created by the mage Ormus.

Mephisto then just had to wait for his brothers Diablo and Baal to come free him completely. Diablo, in the guise of the Dark Wanderer, and Baal, using the body the Horadrim mage Tal Rasha, arrive at Kurast and release Mephisto, who starts a ritual to open the gates of Hell and to recreate Diablo's body with Aidan's body. As Diablo steps through the gate to gather the armies of Hell and Baal goes after Marius to retrieve his Soulstone, Mephisto stays there to fight the adventurers who were after Diablo. Mephisto is defeated, and his Soulstone is later destroyed in the Hellforge, which banish his soul.

Diablo 3[]

Mephisto was identified as the fourth and final Great Evil, whose essence was discovered in the Black Soulstone. While filled with anger, he was able to manipulate Adria's mind to avoid any damage. Mephisto temporarily merged with Diablo as a Prime Evil, but a new hero defeated Diablo and the Great Evils were contained within the Black Soulstone once again. The stone was ultimately destroyed by Malthael, freeing Diablo with Mephisto's essence and that of the other Evils. Eventually, Mephisto's spirit was able to break free from Diablo.

As Mephisto departed to the Burning Hells, a fragment of his being lingered in Sanctuary and manifested as a Bloodied Wolf. Meanwhile, Lilith's arrival in Sanctuary was met with reverence from the Cult of Triune, while Mephisto's essence remained dispersed within Hell. In the guise of the Bloodied Wolf, he shielded stray travelers from imperceptible threats, perhaps anticipating their involvement in Lilith's eventual defeat.

Within the Realm of Hatred, Mephisto began to regenerate in his temple, but Lilith detected this and attempted to disrupt his realm by introducing the souls of the Barbarians taken by Baal. Fortunately, the Wanderer stumbled upon a shrine dedicated to him and sought his aid against Lilith. The Wanderer revealed himself and offered to grant them his blessing if they laid the renegade souls to rest. He helped them without concealing his identity, leading them to his Cathedral where his essence gathered in preparation for Lilith's arrival. Following her defeat and subsequent confinement within a shard of the Worldstone, the Wanderer promised to return them to Sanctuary and close the gates of Hell.

Diablo 4[]

As The Wanderer and Neyrelle encounter Mephisto, who possesses a new soulstone, Neyrelle recognizes the runes on the wolf's head as Mephisto's. She becomes apprehensive about the wolf's true identity. Mephisto's essence, a giant floating sphere of blood, is visible within his temple. Despite the agreed plan, Neyrelle refuses to follow it, sealing him and tainting herself. After Lilith's defeat, Neyrelle leaves, vowing to end the Primes before she loses herself. Unbeknownst to her, Mephisto follows her in the form of the Bloodied Wolf, watching as she slowly loses herself each day.

Personality[]

Like his brothers, Mephisto is completely evil, albeit Mephisto himself is being the most serious of the three. Despite the fact that he and and his brother are getting along with each other, he had tendency to pit them against each other. Diablo and Baal chafed at his manipulations, but more often than not they complied. Deckard Cain speculated that this was because Mephisto provided them with ample opportunities to pursue their ambitions. Not just toward his own brothers, he also held an immense ambition to do the same with entire society, which this suit for his title Lord of Hatred.

He also the most intelligent of the three, as he formulate his evil plans better than his brothers which effectively made him a great tactician of hell. Other reason that made him feared was his voice even very painful to hear. Mephisto views hatred as a powerful tool, but it has a miasmic effect on his surroundings. By the Reign of Enmity, his hatred corrupted areas of Sanctuary, including the nephalem and humanity. He hates all, including angels, and even despises Creation itself. Mephisto sees the inhabitants of Sanctuary as weapons to be forged in his likeness and directed towards the High Heavens. However, he does have some respect for Auriel, considering her aspect "the only virtue with purpose." Mephisto's undead minions, known as "foul blood," are tainted with his hatred, causing mortals to turn against each other in Sanctuary areas due to their tainted nature.

Mephisto perceives hatred as a powerful instrument, to be used with utmost precision. The mere presence of his hatred spreads like a noxious fog wherever he goes. During the Reign of Enmity, his intense animosity was able to emanate from the depths of Hell itself, corrupting various regions of Sanctuary. He harbors a deep loathing towards all beings, including the nephalem and humanity, whom he deems feeble in both body and mind, taking pleasure in their suffering. His abhorrence even extends to the very concept of Creation. However, his strongest disdain is reserved for angels. Consequently, he sees the denizens of Sanctuary as tools to be shaped in his image and directed towards the celestial realm of the High Heavens. Nevertheless, there seems to be a certain level of admiration for Auriel, as he regards her aspect of hope as the sole virtue with true purpose. In a subtle gesture, he even winked at her during the agreement formed at the conclusion of the Sin War.
