|“||Oh, what, just because a guy likes to dress effeminately, and hang around with another extremely attractive man, and read yaoi, and flaunt his gorgeous abs, and stroke a phallic symbol suggestively in every other scene, that automatically makes him gay?!||„|
Unlike his mainstream counterpart, who was a criminal mastermind, this version of Marik is petty and dim-witted. The only reason he even became a villain is because it would make him sexier.
In the Evil Council miniseries he's shown to have poor management skills and his plans of villainy are little more than committing minor inconveniences for Yugi and the other characters. His alter-ego Melvin isn't quite sure how he could have spawned from his mind.
A running gag is that Marik is gay, but won't admit it. This is in contrast to Dark Bakura, who is also gay but comfortable with it.
Marik's Millenium Rod gives him the power to mind-control people, but only if they have the name "Steve". To get around this obstacle, Marik often has his victims sign a waiver that legally changes their names to Steve. It's been shown to work on Joey, Teá and Bandit Keith.
