The human race deserves the zombie apocalypse and now look at you. You destroy the very company that brings you the medicine to heal your loved ones.
~ Marian Mallon, to Frank West and Chuck Greene.

Dr. Marian Mallon is the main antagonist of the Dead Rising series. She is the former director of the defunct Phenotrans company that indirectly started the outbreaks in Las Vegas and Fortune City to collect queens and use them to further profit off Zombrex production.

After the fall of her company for the controversial truth, Marian wanted to find the orphan immune to the zombie parasite, with the help of General Hemlock, to use it to create a cure for herself.

She was voiced by Jacqueline Samuda in Dead Rising 2: Case West, and was voiced by Kathleen Garrett in Dead Rising 3.

Biography[]

Dead Rising: Road to Fortune[]

Then current director of Phenotrans, Marian sought to instigate an outbreak Las Vegas from a research facility located just outside of Fortune City. But not before her right hand Mr. Harjit Singh, head of Phenotrans security, had brought in a wayward scientist, Dr. Curnow; to her main office. Evidently her soon to be ex-employee had a sudden painge of conscience after all the years of unethical experimentation and attempted to come clean about the company's malpractice and imminent disaster profiteering initiative.

But Marian brushes his moralistic ramblings as banal hypocrisy since even before hand he didn't have a problem sacrificing the lives of countless squatters, prison inmates and the otherwise unwashed masses of capitals of vice, depravity and over indulgence in the past two years he'd worked under her.

She then cites it as a Darwinistic turn in creating outbreaks to murder off scores of people and potentially infecting countless more for the sole means of acquiring the queens needed to produce the zombrex that keeps their affliction at bay for the sake of keeping business trending. Before having her right hand summarily dispatch Curnow, only lamenting that they could've used him in the upcoming operation in Vegas. If for nothing else than as another plague spreader.

After the operation in Las Vegas was hit with resounding success, infecting over 1 million people and killing over 100,000, Mallon was overjoyed to hear Phenotrans will have another successful harvest this year around. Musing with her top enforcer that Vegas was just the first of a great many harvests to come from there on.

Dead Rising 2: Case West[]

After Chuck and Frank venture to the Nevada laboratory to find the latter's source within the Secure Lab, they're revealed to be none other than Isabela Keyes. She explains herself about being forced to work for Phenotrans and needing to escape so as to continue her research on finding the synthetic version of her cure. However; director Mallon, now sporting a wheelchair and a zombie infectant bite mark on her face, reveals herself in a room above them and sends in guards to capture the trio. Isabela manages to get away, leading Chuck and Frank to believe that she was only using them to help her own escape. Keyes returns shortly after with a gun in hand in an attempt to free the two. However, Singh, is sent to deal with the situation and promptly knocks out Isabela when she attempts to escape. She throws a flash drive towards Frank containing information regarding Phenotrans's practices, telling him that "the world must know" just before fainting and being taken to Marian. However, the flash drive is smashed by Harjit, and Frank and Chuck begin a battle with him.

After her bodyguard's defeat and death happens, Marian explains the cure's existence and her actions are nothing more than what humanity deserves, seeking to make an example of how Chuck and Frank lumbered through her company domiciliary wrecking everything in sight leaves her with no choice but to start its self-destruct function, she leaves with Isabela. Also adding that there's going to be another "harvest" which means another outbreak.

Dead Rising 3[]

Marian is first seen after Nick is able to successfully sneak into the Special Ops compound and hears a conversation between General Hemlock and her. The two talk about the outbreak and Marian reveals that she is searching for Diego.

In the meantime, Mallon enjoys some small entertainment of Hemlock's plan to infect president Sonya Paddock with a zombie parasite for his own intents of martial law. After which, Nick manages to find & free Annie and the rest of the captives. After the Spec Ops manages to capture Nick & Diego. Marian, who is trying to find out which one of them has the cure, commands that the scientists "activate" orphan 49 first, to see if he's "the one".

Diego is then zapped with an intense laser beam, only to be killed as several of the zombie parasites swarm out of his body. Hundreds of parasitic bees also swarm around the laboratory following his death, and Nick is able to break free of his restraints in the confusion.

Ramos meets with Isabela and they opt to escape so she can further explain later on, but they're attacked by Mallon working a power crane. After defeating Mallon, he escapes and goes to find Annie, the former CEO of Phenotrans vowing to get her hands on test subject #12 (who is later revealed to be Nick himself) no matter the cost.

Ending S[]

Chuck and Nick manage to find Hemlock and Marian. Marian reminds Hemlock that they need a cure, to which Hemlock calls it a bullshit and tries to convince her that it does not exist, but Mallon doesn't agree and says he makes her sick. Furious, Hemlock grabs Marian by her neck, last thing he tells her is that her usefulness has expired and throws her off the roof. Then he proceeds to go forth with the extraction of king zombies from the city.

After the credits, it is revealed that Isabela was the one behind the outbreak the whole time, convincing Mallon to begin it with her goal being the unknown numbered orphan would realize his immunity and come forward. The two seeking to successfully make the cure and Isabella patenting herself as the creator of which, clearing her family name from what she and Carlito did in Willamette. Back in the present, Isabela destroys the evidence of this and leaves the city with the others, making her elaborate plan a (questionable) success.

Ending C[]

In this ending, Hemlock has been found out for his crimes and gets arrested, however the game credits do not mention Mallon, so it's presumed she managed to get away again but has failed to find the cure and confirm its existence.

Dead Rising: The Last Agent[]

This episode revolves around Zombie Defense and Control operative named Brad Park would go rummaging around the ruined city of Los Perdidos during the outbreak. Uncovering some incriminating information about Hemlock, Marian, and possibly on Isabela Keyes also. While looking up encrypted files which members of hemlock's special ops force tried to dispose of on the secretary of defense's orders.

Having looked up Mallon's name as he was combing through the data contents. Brad was perplexed at what he found, considering the morally degenerate ex-company head was slated for an indeterminate prison sentence for her corporations crimes after Phenotrans dissolution following the revelation of their/her corruption.

Personality[]

Marian placates an extremely selfish, egotistical, hypocritical and misanthropic personality, stating that humanity is the cause this plague she profits from in the first place. As such, the human race deserved the zombie apocalypse which they had a hand in the creation of. Most of her background is shrouded in mystery, with only a few small tokens of her life found in the Director's Office. This hits as largely pot meets kettle as Mallon slighted mankind for being greedy, arrogant, complacent and characteristically revolting; while she and others at the company Mallon once owned had little to no qualms about causing outbreaks or experimenting on transients and others to keep both the money flowing and such a tragic economy going. Unlike Sullivan, Marian has no interest in using Zombrex to save lives and is motivated by the large amounts of revenue that she can make off it by selling it to the wealthy.

She is a traitorous, disloyal, money grubbing iconoclast. Acting out a survival of the fittest power fantasy as she showcases all the amoral, negative traits that Marian initially spites regular people for having to an even greater degree. Creating and profiting off of the very atrocity the hubris of man, their excesses & general apathy created for personal benefit at the expense of others. Her baneful sense of entitlement has gotten the best of her at times, indicated by her once getting too close to her main source of wealth, ending with her being infected and crippled for it. It was this same inflated superiority and disrespect for those around her that also bankrupted her company and inevitably lead to her demise as well.

On top of that, Mallon was also a consummate liar at heart, given how she boasted of having discovered the cure to the outbreak parasites long ago, just to rub it in the faces of those whom opposed her. Egotistically stating that humanity didn't deserve what she took in order stave off her infection when she never did fix her own reliance on Zombrex her business concern produces. Not to mention blatantly calling Frank & Chuck out for their reckless destruction of her firms equipage, thus belaying the production of the only thing keeping them and their loved ones from turning into reanimated atrocities. Harkening her hypocrisy as she's the one causing zombie disasters that lead to Frank's infection and the loss of Chuck's wife and his daughters mother to begin with. This also highlights how full of herself she is, while being nothing more than, as Mr. West described her company, a mere bloodsucking leech who is useless without some greater power backing up her snark.

As time took its toll and it became extent how empty her boasting about the cure really was. Mallon only became more-so haughty and inclined to her sociopathic demeanor. Caring not for aiding and abetting the death toll of millions in a major metropolitan area when taken under advisement to find her miracle remedy, playing party to high treason by witnessing the murder of a presidential figure so the corrupt secretary of defense could usurp power over state. Gaining an even more so callous disregard for human life in her desperate search to alleviate her disease gained from the outbreaks she profiteered from. Also becoming quite belligerent and volatile, Isabella once citing her scar came from Marian due to jealousy of her natural beauty.

Trivia[]

  • Mallon is the only main antagonist of the Dead Rising series who survives the respective game's events, and so far the only one that the player does not directly battle.
  • Mallon is apparently a fan of Bibi Love, as Mallon has a portrait in her office of Bibi Love performing on stage in her leather outfit. This portrait seems to be signed "Bibi" or "Diva", and also near the middle of the picture there seems to be an inserted square picture of Marian's face.
  • Shortly before her death in Overtime Mode, Mallon gets into an argument with General Hemlock over the existence of a cure for the zombie parasite. While Hemlock believes it to be only a myth, Mallon is determined to find it at all costs. This confirms that she had (in-fact) lied back in Dead Rising 2: Case West when she hinted of the cure's existence to Frank West and Chuck Greene.
  • Before the events of the outbreak in Dead Rising 3, Mallon's reaction about Isabela's plan to cause the outbreak was very ironic of her personality, as she has described that thousands of lives and even orphan's wills be sacrificed and immediately rejected her plan, only to let Isabela provoke her to accept her plan, it was never explained what caused Mallon not to be evil for once.
