I only wanted to help people...and I've killed the one thing I ever loved.
~ Kirk Langstrom, expressing remorse for causing his wife's death.
But I did, nothing can change that. I'm a freak...a monster. They should leave me to rot in here.
~ Kirk Langstrom.

Dr. Kirk Langstrom, known as Man-Bat after his mutation, is the main antagonist of the Most Wanted mission Creature of the Night in the 2015 video game, Batman: Arkham Knight. After an experiment went wrong, Langstrom mutated into a monstrous humanoid bat-like creature, no longer able to control his actions.

He is voiced by Loren Lester.

Biography[]

Past[]

Dr. Kirk Langstrom's past is unknown but he gained a doctorate in zoology with a speciality in bat physiology. At some point, he was diagnosed with an unnamed chronic condition that stole his hearing and made him almost completely death. Working with his wife Francine, Dr. Langstrom rented out a basement laboratory on Bleake Island where they worked to splice human and bat DNA together to give them sonar hearing. They succeeded butm shortly after being exposed to the "cure", Dr. Langstrom mutated into the mindless Man-Bat; Francine worrying asking if her husband is alright, only to scream and drop the camera as Man-Bat struck her dead, flew from the room and escaped the underground laboratory by flying up through the street. With his mind replaced by feral instinct, the Man-Bat spent the day in an unknown hideaway and spent the nights flying around Gotham; scaring many residents and criminals.

Batman: Arkham Knight[]

On Halloween Night 2015, whilst pursuing the Arkham Knight and Barbara Gordon onto Miagani Island, the Batman grapples onto a rooftop onto to be surprised by Man-Bat who flies off. Tracking down the creature again, the Batman manages to fly above Man-Bat, tackle him to the street and take a blood sample before it flies off. Uploading it to the Batcomputer, the Batman learns from Alfred that the heavily mutated blood has a partial match for Dr. Kirk Langstrom. Arriving at the laboratory to search for clues, Batman finds it in ruins and witnesses Langstrom's recorded transformation on screens; also finding Francine's corpse in the basement and after analysing it, deduces that Langstrom had no idea what he was doing as he lacked any control in his newly-mutated state. Using the computer where Langstrom stored all his data, Batman is able to synthesize an antidote.

To save Langstrom, Batman searches the skies of Gotham for Man-Bat. After finding him, he glides on top on Man-Bat and forcefully injects the cure into his bloodstream. However, he is not able to inject enough of the antidote before Man-Bat shakes him off and takes off again. After doing this twice more, Man-Bat finally faints and the Batman drives him into an isolation chamber at the GCPD, planning to keep him there until the cure works. Arriving at the GCPD, Batman sees that Langstrom has turned back human but locks him up nonetheless to be sure.

After he regaining consciousness, Dr. Kirk Langstrom asks Batman where Francine is. Batman tells him that Kirk killed her. Though he tries to make clear to Langstrom that he had no control over what he did, a devastated Kirk drops to the ground, crying uncontrollably. If the console date is set to Halloween 2015, Batman can return to the GCPD to see that the glass of the isolation chamber is broken and Langstrom is gone. Talking to a nearby guard reveals that Langstrom turned back into the Man-Bat, smashed the glass and escaped. What happens to him after that is unknown.
