Biography[]

Video games[]

Pokémon Sun/Pokémon Moon[]

Lusamine is introduced as the president of the established Aether Foundation, an organization that takes care of injured and hurt Pokémon, and later revealed as the mother of Gladion and Lillie. At first, Lusamine is shown to be a "good lady with good intentions", and is first seen when the player and their rival, Hau, arrive in Aether Paradise, the base of the Aether Foundation, as well as an artificial island. They first come across Lusamine when she is seen comforting a few Pokémon before greeting the player and Hau, whom she discusses the purpose of the Aether Foundation with and says she will "shower all Pokémon with love" in a motherly sense.

After talking with the two, a mysterious portal appears, and an Ultra Beast known as "UB-01" appears from it, shocking everyone. However, Lusamine seems so pleased. UB-01 then disappears and Lusamine bids farewell to the player and Hau as they leave for the next island.

After the rise of the villainous organization Team Skull and the kidnapping of Lillie, the player's companion and good friend, Hau, the player and Gladion head to Aether Paradise, where Gladion claims that is where Lillie must've been taken. He states that he wants to keep her and Nebby, a small and vulnerable Pokémon she's been trying to keep hidden, safe. Once they arrive at Aether Paradise, they're confronted by several Aether Paradise members who reveal their true intentions, along with their dark side. It was revealed that Team Skull had been working with the Aether Foundation, who had been sponsoring them.

After the player, Hau and Gladion discover the experiments the Aether Foundation conduct, they head to Lusamine's chamber where they find her talking with a frightened Lillie. Surrounding Lusamine are several frozen Pokémon, preserved perfectly as part of Lusamine's "collection". She asks the player what she thinks of her collection, showing a slightly evil grin on her face. Upon arguing with Gladion and Lillie, she reveals to the player and Hau that they're her children, accusing them of stealing Type: Null (an artificial Pokémon created by the Aether Foundation that Gladion stole) and Nebby from her. Picking up a chest that Nebby is trapped inside, she questions how many Ultra Wormholes (portals connected to the Ultra Beasts) she will open before unleashing Nebby's power, opening a few portals around the Alola region. Lillie exclaims that if she uses too much of Nebby's power, it will die. Lusamine doesn't seem to care though, and goes to her office. Soon after, Guzma enters the room right before another Nihilego enters through a portal. At that moment, the player is forced to fight Lusamine while Hau battles Guzma and Gladion fights the Nihilego. After Lusamine battles the player, she, Guzma and the Nihilego proceed to travel through the portal into Ultra Space, disappearing in there after it closes.

She had been obsessed with the mysterious "Ultra Beasts" after her husband ventured into the Ultra Space (where the creatures reside) and vanished. Lusamine dressed herself to resemble one of the Ultra Beasts known as Pheromosa, and also dressed her daughter Lillie in clothes that looked a lot like Nihilego (UB-01). When Lillie and the player reach Ultra Space, they come across an insane Lusamine. She recalls that Lillie once was "adorable" to her, and notes that she has now "turned ugly" due to her befriending the player, and then proceeds to place accusations upon the player. Lusamine sends out Nihilego and reaches her arms out above as it fuses with her, becoming "Lusamine-Nihilego", then battling the player with her Pokémon. After being defeated, Lusamine-Nihilego is seen to be furious. Before she is able to crush the player with her bare hands, Lillie calls out the Sunne Pokémon Solgaleo/Moone Pokémon Lunala (depending on the version), who then blasts Lusamine-Nihilego with their special power. Lusamine then detaches from Nihilego and returns to normal.

Lusamine collapses to the ground, visibly tired. Lillie rushes to her aid and seemingly forgives her mother, who wonders when her daughter had "started to become beautiful". It was later revealed that Nihilego emitted neurotoxins that had gradually corrupted Lusamine. When Lusamine was intoxicated, she acted as if Nihilego was her own child, and loved it more than Gladion and Lillie. Lusamine's obsession with the Ultra Beasts may have stemmed from trying to find her lost husband according to what Gladion speculates post-game. However, Nihilego's neurotoxins amplified it, to the point of insanity. After her defeat, Lusamine fell into a deep coma, but not before asking Lillie how she become beautiful. After everyone was vacated from Ultra Deep Sea, Hapu brings Lusamine to Aether Paradise to help stabilize her debilitating health. It was mentioned by Lillie that Lusamine wanted to join the player's celebration for becoming The Pokémon League's first Champion, though she was unable to due to her condition. It was mentioned in the post-game that Lusamine had traveled to Kanto with her daughter, Lillie, to seek more treatment through consulting Bill, who had once fused with another Pokémon before, and Lillie hopes that it would help remove the rest of Nihilego's lingering neurotoxins.

Pokémon Ultra Sun/Pokémon Ultra Moon[]

Much is the same as in Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon; however, she is no longer driven to madness by Nihilego's toxins. She now desires to use the Ultra Beasts as weapons to protect their world, regardless of what anyone tells her. Lusamine eventually gets kicked out of Ultra Space by Necrozma before this can happen. After Necrozma's defeat, Lusamine realizes that using the Ultra Beasts as weapons was not the best idea and she reforms herself again. During the credits scene, Lusamine can be seen waving goodbye to her son, when the latter departs to Kanto and Johto to continue training his Pokémon. Following the player's success of becoming champion, Lusamine is kidnapped by Giovanni and his newly established Team Rainbow Rocket, although the player defeats him and his minions, saving Lusamine once again. On every first day of the month, Lusamine can challenge the player at the Pokémon League to a Title Defense battle. Following Gladion's defeat here, Mohn will pay a visit to Aether Paradise after many years since his vanishing. Although excited to see him again, Lusamine stays quiet on Mohn's past, thinking himself to be happy as he is now.

Pokémon Masters[]

Lusamine appears as one of the numerous Sync Pairs usable to the player. For her Sync Pair, she is a five-star Sync Pair of the Bug-typing, using a Pheromosa. She was first introduced in the "Family Ties" event, in which Lusamine enters a tournament for families alongside Lillie and Gladion. Their personalities originally cause them to be unable to properly work together, but with the help of the protagonist and other trainers, their bond grows deeper and they succeed in working together as a team. Later on, Lusamine received a sygma suit during the "The Light Devourer" event, where she uses a five-star Dusk Mane Necrozma that represents the Psychic-type, with this Necrozma also able to transform into Ultra Necrozma upon using the sync move "Loving Light That Burns the Sky".

As for storyline appearances, Lusamine makes her first appearance within the Alola-themed chapter, helping wrangle a group of Nihilego after they spawn from a wormhole. While Lusamine does show concern towards Anabel for their habit of attracting Ultra Beasts and for overworking themselves, Anabel shrugs off their worries. That being said, Anabel continues their conversation to the woman by noting of a greater concern: the theft of Ultra Wormhole-related intel by Team Rocket. As information relating to the spawning of random Pokémon and Ultra Beasts is detailed to the woman, her suspicions grow relating to a possible mole within her group, suspecting that Faba may be the culprit from a call he falsely claimed to be from her. Seeking them out, Lusamine has her children drag Faba towards their location, hoping to reveal the nature of their possible interception. While Faba first attempts to lie once more on calling Lusamine, his fib is quickly revealed through Lusamine's testimony, to which stubbornly defends his innocence.

However, this meeting is interrupted by a group of turncoat agents of Team Aether, managing to distract most of the heroes into venturing outward as Lusamine is left alone with Faba. However, this meeting is interrupted by a group of loyalists for Faba's cause, managing to distract most of the heroes into venturing outward as Lusamine is left alone with Faba. Understandably annoyed by their hopes of overthrowing their leader and the reveal of their plot, Lusamine takes what little supporters she has and defends against the two team's attack, although the chances of them managing to defeat the grunts quickly turn against them. As the situation seems dire, however, Faba stands up to defend himself against the team, having been revealed to be merely searching for other job opportunities and wanting to redeem himself towards his leader. While Faba does admit his fickle mind is mainly desired by the jobs offered to him, he still stands behind Lusamine's ideals for the Aether Foundation, being disgusted with the treason attempted by some of its grunts. His alliance, alongside the arrival of Team Skull to aid their team, ultimately results in the defeat of the traitorous Team Aether grunts and their Team Rocket allies, with Guzma even managing to discover how to shut down the summoning of Ultra Wormholes through them. With the day saved, Lusamine is last seen enjoying herself on the beach with some newly friendly (if stranded) Ultra Beasts, even managing to talk Faba into keeping his membership among her foundation.

Anime[]

Gladion: My mother has been researching Ultra Beasts because she's always wanted to come in contact with them, and her wish has finally come true.
Kiawe: But it's trying to merge with her!
Gladion: She's probably isn't thinking about it that way. It's like she's finally got the toy she's been yearning for.
~ Gladion explaining how his mother has been corrupted by Nihilego.

In the anime, Lusamine is rather cheerful and likes to tease others. She is overly affectionate towards Lillie, treating her like a baby and failing to understand her daughter's feelings, resulting in friction between the two. For instance, Lusamine evolved her Clefairy into Clefable despite Lillie preferring Clefairy as it was, with the two arguing about which one was "cuter". Several flashbacks to Lillie's early childhood reveal Lusamine to have once been far less overbearing while enjoying a healthy relationship with her children.

Lusamine still holds her fascination with Ultra Beasts, even after Lillie had almost been kidnapped by Nihilego when she was little, resulting in her fear of touching or getting close to Pokémon. Gladion chides her for this, believing that his mother cared more about her own desires rather than her children, resulting in her having a distant relationship with her son as well. After Faba successfully opened an Ultra Wormhole using Nebby's energy and summoned Nihilego, Lusamine smiled in a brief moment of delight upon seeing the creature for herself before coming back to reality.

When fused with Nihilego, Lusamine's personality reverts to that of a child and her mind is corrupted by her own desires. In this state, she refers to the Ultra Beasts as her possessions and reacts violently to those she assumes are trying to take them away from her, even to those who are close to her, like Lillie and Gladion. Following her separation from the Ultra Beast, she returns to her original self and - upon the group's return to Alola - creates the Ultra Guardians to protect Alola from Ultra Beasts by catching those that stray into Alola and release them back into the Ultra Space.

Unlike her original game adaption, this version of Lusamine was never truly a villain, and instead only served as an unwilling antagonist as a result of Nihilego's corruption.

Pokémon Adventures[]

Lusamine debuts in the "Sun & Moon" chapter, and is first seen at Aether Paradise, talking to an employee.

Trivia[]

  • Lusamine is the first female villainous team leader in the main game series, as well as the first female main antagonist.
  • In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon, Lusamine mentioned to Hau that although she looks young, she is over 40 years old. It is possible that Nihilego's toxins could've affected her aging process.
  • During the second battle against Lusamine, all of her Pokémon except Bewear (which never even had a visible emotion to begin with) have angry facial expressions instead of their usual expressions. This is likely due to Nihilego's toxins.
  • Two of Lusamine's Pokémon—her Lilligant and Clefable—had evolved from using Sun and Moon stones respectively.
  • Lusamine's name sounds similar to the phrase, "Lose a mind" which reflects her loss of sanity. In Pokémon Sun/Pokémon Moon, she loses her sanity when she is corrupted by Nihilego's toxins. In Pokémon Ultra Sun/Pokémon Ultra Moon, she loses her sanity when her husband was sucked into an Ultra Wormhole and due to her extreme desire to use the Ultra Beasts to protect the world.
  • In Sun and Moon, there are a few subtle, easy-to-miss hints that Lusamine is the true main antagonist.
    • Lillie, Gladion, and Lusamine share the same eye and hair color, hinting that all three of them are related.
    • The opening cutscene of the game involves Lillie fleeing from Aether Paradise.
    • When the player first encounters an apparel shop, Lillie states that her mother dressed her how she wanted. One may note that Nihilego's design bears a striking resemblance to Lillie's first outfit.
    • Lillie gets nervous when offered to tour Aether Paradise, and insists to watch Hau battle Olivia, despite not being a fan of Pokémon battling.
    • In her encounter theme, the percussion seems to clash with the soothing melodies, hinting Lusamine isn't what she seems.
    • Lusamine states that "Even Pokémon from distant worlds, far from the Alola region, are worthy of my love." when explaining her role as President of the Aether Foundation.
    • She gets noticeably irritated when Hau mentions Lillie, and claims children should "do what they are told".
    • She smirks after the Nihilego that the player battles is defeated, and insists she will "save it and love it".
