~ Lurtz

Lurtz is a supporting antagonist in the 2001 film, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

He was portrayed by Lawrence Makoare who also portrayed the Witch-King of Angmar, Gothmog, and Bolg.

Biography

Lurtz is the manipulative, ferocious, and powerful leader of the Uruk-hai, a crossbreed between Orcs and Goblin-Men (and stronger than both), created by the corrupted wizard Saruman to aid him in his quest for power and control. Saruman sends Lurtz and a team of Uruks to capture the hobbit carrying the One Ring, and although it is Frodo Baggins who possesses it, the Uruks believe that Merry and Pippin have the ring instead. When Lurtz and his Uruks finally arrive at the forest of Amon Hen, they attack the fellowship in an attempt to recover the ring for Sauron.

Merry and Pippin are kidnapped by the Uruks and as Boromir (a member of the fellowship) protests by valiantly fighting back against them, Lurtz appears and shoots Boromir in the chest with three arrows. As he is about to deliver the final blow, Aragorn leaps onto him and they engage in a brutal fight. Although Aragorn is able to chop off Lurtz's arm and stab him through the stomach, Lurtz pulls his sword towards him to draw Aragorn closer, whilst snarling viciously in his face. Aragorn then quickly withdraws his sword and decapitates Lurtz, but Boromir succumbs to his wounds and dies.
