Villain Overview

I am the radiant morning star, which lights the way to the sons of man. I am the true flame of life in all the glory of flesh, blood, and my own will. So come, ye lifeless puppets of God! I shall snuff out your ostentatious lights.
~ Lucifer in Shin Megami Tensei IV.
I shall not rest until both my subjects and you humans enjoy a level of freedom you have only dreamed about, for this is the true nature of things. Chaos is the true nature of the world! The stronger, more beautiful creatures survive and continue to reproduce, naturally bettering all that live. The cycle of rebirth and destruction will continue unfettered for all eternity, improving life for all until the end of time.
~ Lucifer in Shin Megami Tensei, showing his social Darwinistic beliefs.

Lucifer, AKA Louis Cyphre is the main antagonist of the Shin Megami Tensei series, who serves as an anti-hero/anti-villain and boss in most of the aforementioned franchise's installments, being an antagonist on many occasions, as well as a possible ally and even a playable character in other ones, with him having been a possible tritagonist, depending on the player's choices in Shin Megami Tensei II. He is based on the biblical figure of the same name, often seen as a noble, charismatic demon, and represents the Chaos alignment, which is associated with ideals such as anarchy, war, social Darwinism, individuality, worship of unholy forces, and freedom.

Portrayals[]

Appearance[]

In his human forms, Lucifer is depicted as being extremely well dressed, his Louis Cyphre form using a black/purple tuxedo, with a ring on his middle finger, as well as having black painted fingernails, also having a blue eye and a red eye, and large, platinum blonde hair, his Blond Child avatar being just a child version of the aforementioned form which is accompanied by an old woman in black who has her face covered. He also appeared in the first Shin Megami Tensei as Louis Cyphre, with six angelic wings at his right side and six demonic ones at his left side.

In his female form known as Louisa Ferre, she is barefoot, wearing a prim white dress, with large, platinum blonde hair.

As Hikaru, she is depicted as a teenage schoolgirl, wearing the correspondent school uniform, and carrying a teal bookbag in her right arm, with her hair being brown and her eyes being red, to hint at her true nature.

In Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha VS King Abaddon, he is depicted as a young man, with short blonde hair and blue eyes, wearing a black beret, a grey trench coat, black boots and carrying a black bag.

In his Old Gentleman On A Wheelchair form, he is depicted with a white tuxedo, black shoes, and a far more decadent looking skin, with his black fingernails now being large and deformed, being also, like the name suggests, in a wheelchair, which is controlled by a mysterious woman in black, whose face is covered.

In his most used demonic form, he has a greyish green skin, having also two horns, two red eyes and six bat like demon wings.

The first demonic form that he had, which appeared in the first Megami Tensei game, looked very different, being purple, with Lucifer holding a staff with a skull on it.

In his angelic form, he looks similar to his Louis Cyphre form, but with two horns, two golden eyes and six angelic wings.

In the first persona videogame. he is depicted as a grey, faceless creature with two wings, two red eyes, as well as chains that are violently nailed to his arms and feet.

In Shin Megami Tensei IV, Lucifer's depiction is that of a grey, bald alien-esque looking creature with black eyes, and a golden armour, with a tumor-like protuberance on his left arm, which is because he had been fused with the human known as Walter.

His second form being of light green and blue colors, also having two horns, four bizarre looking wings, two deformed feet and a deformed right hand, and his left hand now having Walter, with the appearance of a parasitic looking creature with a light blue scarf.

In Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse, Lucifer has a similar appearance to the previous installment of the franchise, this time having a dark grey skin tone, being bald, with red eyes, wearing a golden armor and having a deformed right hand, as well as a tumor-looking protuberance on his left arm. Unlike in the previous game, he only attacks from a chair, which has twelve golden rays, which represent his twelve wings.

His true form, looks very different from the rest, looking very robotic, in a white color, with 12 golden, metallic wings, as well as having spiked tips on his shoulders, hands and legs, with godly looking golden eyes.

Being a demon, Lucifer also has an archetypal form, which is, paradoxically, shapeless, and omnipresent across all of existence.

Personality[]

Lucifer's personality has varied through the different games. Originally, he was portrayed as a more stereotypical depiction of the devil, but after characterization marched on, he began to be portrayed as a more complex, enigmatic and even morally ambiguous character, and since then, he is always portrayed as an extremely sophisticated, well-educated, and unmeasurably intelligent being who likes to wear expensive looking suits on many of his forms, and sometimes talks using a classical, Shakespearean-style English, being also very calm most of the time, and having shown signs of caring about manners and affability, as he stated that he hoped that GomIory was not rough towards Aleph when she invited him to Lucifer's castle. Despite of this, it's worth to mention, that in many of his appearances, he emits animalistic, demonic growls, an example being the final boss battle during Nocturne. He also often emits evil laughs, mainly when using passive skills or before unleashing a devastating attack, indicating a minor sign of sadism, and speaking of which, like the other demons in the series, he has no problem with ferociously attacking his enemies, as well as killing them and/or draining their vitalities and magatsuhi/magnetite, despite not needing too, like he did after killing YHVH, with this being a possible sign of greed.

One of his most notable and known characteristics, is his enormous hatred towards YHVH, due to them being complete binary opposites when it comes to ideals, and due to the fact that Lucifer was defeated by him in the past, having done things only to spite the Monotheistic God, and having wanted to overthrow him and kill him, which he managed to do before the events of Shin Megami Tensei V. He also has a certain dislike of law aligned beings, though this is somewhat limited. It has also been shown that all chaos aligned demons are just aspects of Lucifer, meaning that all of the powers and abilities from said chaos demons are also part of him, which includes the ability of demons like Ishtar and King Frost to break the fourth wall, as well as the martial skills of beings like Sun Wukong, Ares, and others, as well as the ability in necromancy of Nebiros.

In Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, while under his female moniker of Louisa Ferre, Lucifer has stated that humans are beings made of god's madness, and that they have brought the crysis that they were suffering due to the Schwarzwelt on themselves, but he also stated that although he has no love for humanity, he will never abandon them, and he values the freedom of individuals, although to a certain extent, since he has manipulated many humans into becoming demons, and thinks that only the strong deserve such freedom. He is known for his support of war, anarchy and Social Darwinism, believing that whoever is the fittest, has to be the one who makes the rules, and believes that this way, a coherent society would be created, and considering that both humans and demons, must not be divorced from this natural, chaotic process. Due to this, he values strength, but also speed, effort, productivity, intellect, special abilities such as magic and combat skills and determination, as well as the struggle, suffering and competition from where society would "evolve". He is not hypocritical in his reasoning, however, as he will accept that if an enemy defeats him, they were the one to be in the right. He is shown to enjoy fighting with powerful opponents, an example being during Devil Survivor, in where he stated that the protagonist "looked fun" as a reason to fight with him, and is even capable of letting his opponent use their most powerful attacks on him, even stating that this will satisfy him, indicating a minor sign of masochism, as he did in his fight with Raidou Kuzunoha during Shin Megami Tensei Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha VS King Abaddon. Due to his belief in survival of the fittest and eugenics, he is extremely competitive and views most beings as competition to his power. He also has shown signs of paranoia, as seen by the fact that he believed that Aleph may be the reincarnation of Satan, during Shin Megami Tensei II, until he discovered that this was not the case.

In Strange Journey, he, in his Louisa Ferre avatar, states that a world in where nothing dies and nothing is born would be a sterile one, which would have no growth, making it lifeless in essence, which shows that Lucifer opposes immortalism.

While he his regularly portrayed as a being who fully supports unfettered chaos, causing it for the sake of it, and who hates order, in Strange Journey, for example, he prefers for some degree of order to exist within the human society, rather than just mindless chaos. He also has a lot of ideas based on Nietzscheanism, believing that destruction of the old is necessary for the creation of the new, having also a bit of ideas based on the concept of the Ubermensch on him, since in Shin Megami Tensei II, he talks about acting on his own values, and one of his goals is to eliminate the conventional conception of morality that humanity has, viewing himself above good and evil, and having an slightly strange and alien-esque system of morality which can't be totally comprehended by mortals, while also being considered a representative of strength, autonomy, courage and willpower.

In Shin Megami Tensei IV, he had no trouble in commiting an act of anthropophagy by devouring the body, mind and soul of the samurai known as Walter, while Lucifer himself was weakened and in a female form known as Hikaru, in order to fuse with said samurai, which proves that at least that version of Lucifer has no moral opposition to devouring humans, which likely applies to his other versions as well, and which is consistent with him being a demon.

In Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse, in which he has one his most evil depictions, he was still willing to make a truce between Merkabah and humanity in order to focus in their fight against Krishna and The Divine Orders, who were the major threat in that scenario.

Lucifer is also the demon who represents the Deadly Sin of Pride, and he has shown to be slightly narcissistic, viewing himself as some kind of embodiment of freedom, although he is capable of admitting his flaws. He strongly supports the idea of ambition for power, wealth, knowledge, etc, being somewhat power hungry given that he absorbed YHVH's power after killing him during Shin Megami Tensei V. He is also known for being highly rebellious, due to his nature as the personification of chaos.

He has been linked with the Devil Arcana, which is related to selfishness, greed, lust, impulsivity, violence, antisocial behaviour, and being a slave to one's feelings and impulse, but with the positive values of having a healthy bond and/or commitment, having goals behind of it, which can be benevolent, or at least morally grey.

He has also been linked to the Star Arcana, which is related to hope, faith, self-confidence, altruism, luck, generosity, peace and joy.

Curiously, he was linked as well with the Judgment Arcana, which is related to intelligence, intuition, a great understanding of life, with a feeling of absolution and acceptance.

He is known for being an extremely proficient master manipulator, having manipulated 1/3 of the angels of Heaven into following him, and regularly recruits humans or former humans that can choose to follow him. However, Lucifer's affability is not faked, as he rarely insults his enemies, even after being defeated, not to mention that if Aleph denies Lucifer's offer of an alliance at the end of Shin Megami Tensei II, the latter will state that he doesn't want the former to be his enemy, and calmly lets him walk away. Another example of his honor, is the fact that, with the exception of SMT IV and SMT IV: Apocalypse, Lucifer has always accepted demons and gods of different religions to join his army. In some games, he has played devil's advocate, having used arguments for the protagonists to support paths that he doesn't agree with.

In Shin Megami Tensei II, it is shown that he likes to spend time in bars, and in one occasion, he forbids Aleister Crowley to make an orgy in his house, without a explanation being given for that. In said game, he is also depicted as being fearless and brave, wanting to stop Satan despite knowing that his chances of beating the latter are slim, not caring if he will die as long as he takes him with him, only caring about the fate of his people and the planet.

In Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha VS King Abaddon, he states that he likes to spend time in churches, as he finds them soothing.

During the events of Shin Megami Tensei V, much of Lucifer's Social Darwinist mindset seems to have disappeared, being mostly interested in freeing the universe from the powers of destiny controlled by creation itself, supporting the protagonist of the game, the Nahobino, no matter which route the latter takes, and at the end of the game, he willingly accepted his defeat at said protagonist's hands due to him having fulfilled his destiny. He still shows signs of disliking rudeness, as he states that Angels have a uncouth behaviour due to them attacking him when he was explaining his plan.

Devil Children[]

In the Devil Children sub-series, Lucifer retains many of his personality from the mainstream series, but he is portrayed more heroically, as well as being portrayed to be a loving father to his children.

Trivia[]

  • Lucifer's Louis Cyphre form is believed to be based on the late singer David Bowie, with his mismatched eyes being parallel to David Bowie's eye condition. The name Louis Cyphre is very likely based on the character of the same name portrayed by Robert De Niro in the 1987 movie, Angel Heart, as well as the book in which said movie was based, Falling Angel, written by William Hjortsberg.
  • Kazuma Kaneko, the demon designer of the Shin Megami Tensei series, has stated that Lucifer isn't inherently evil, but rather, a figure that tests and tempts the protagonists through the franchise.
  • The reason on why Lucifer is portrayed with two different human forms in Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne, with one being young and the other one being elderly, is to represent how he perceives time non-linearly, not being bound by it at all.
  • In Lucifer's artwork for the game known as Kyuyaku Megami Tensei, he has the word "Astaroth" written on his left hand.
  • During Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne Maniax, Lucifer's stats and rewards were all set to 65,535 (HP, SP, Experience and Macca.) It is worth to mention that this particular number is common in the field of computing as it is 2^16-1, the highest number that can be represented by an unsigned 16-bit binary number. This implies his stats are the highest possible they can get.
  • Curiously, Lucifer is commonly addressed with the pronoun "Excellency" (閣下, kakka in Japanese), instead of simply being referred to as "you" by other demons.
  • There is a somewhat popular fan theory which states that during Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, in one of the cutscenes in which Louisa Ferre (A female human form of Lucifer), passes through the protagonist of the game, who feels her energy around him, it is believed that she became pregnant this way, due to the fact that it is confirmed that Alex from that game, is Louisa Ferre's daughter, with the father being an unknown man.
  • In Megami Tensei II, it is stated that the reason on why Lucifer was banished to hell, was because he gave humans the gift of knowledge, and that made him being worshipped instead of YHVH, with that being the reason on why the latter couldn't stand it and sent the former to the abyss.
  • While it is true that many interpretations depict Lucifer taking the name of Satan after his fall from grace, Lucifer and Satan are portrayed as two distinct characters in the Shin Megami Tensei franchise, and Lucifer himself is rarely addressed as Satan throughout the Megami Tensei series. Instead, he is only addressed by his name, Lucifer, or to some extent, the Great Demon or King of Dark (魔王, Demon King in Japanese).
  • In Lucifer's latest appearance, which was in Shin Megami Tensei V, he is listed as "Neutral-Neutral", which could, more or less be considered Shin Megami Tensei's equivalent to Dungeons And Dragons's True Neutral. In most of his appearances, however, he is listed as "Dark-Chaos", and has varied between being Chaotic Good to Chaotic Neutral in his most sympathetic portrayals such as in Strange Journey and Shin Megami Tensei II, and Chaotic Evil in his most evil depictions, such as the one in Shin Megami Tensei IV and the one in Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse.
  • In Majin Tensei III: Ronde, Lucifer is reincarnated into a baby named "Esper Baby", making him the youngest playable character in the whole franchise.
  • The appearance that Lucifer had in Shin Megami Tensei IV was drawn by Yasushi Nirasawa, who also created Asmodeus' design.
    • In terms of the design's inspirations, Nirasawa designed Lucifer to be an homage to the Cenobites from the Hellraiser series.
