Come for me, holy warrior! Come, fulfill your destiny.
~ Lucifer to Dante before the final battle.
I will reclaim my rightful place in Paradise. My path will be paved with the sins of Man, and yours, Dante, shall be the bedrock of my return. And all that is good shall be gone from the universe forever!
~ Lucifer to Dante.

Lucifer is the main antagonist of the 2010 video game Dante's Inferno and its animated adaptation, which were inspired by the first part of the story by the real life Italian poet Dante Alighieri, which is called The Divine Comedy. Lucifer is based on his counterpart from Dante's poem.

He is the ruler of Hell who makes a deal with Beatrice on Dante's remaining faithful during the Crusades, and wins the deal and takes her to his realm. During Dante's journey to rescue his beloved, Lucifer torments the warrior until he is confronted by him in the final circle of Hell, where it's revealed that the demon had Dante arrive there to free him from his prison. When Lucifer tries to escape from Hell to destroy the world, he is stopped by Alighieri, who uses the souls he has saved to imprison the devil once again.

He was voiced by John Vickery (who also played Scar in the 1997 theatre production of The Lion King, Mr. Welles in Babylon 5, and also voiced Auctioneer in Pirates of the Caribbean: Tales of the Code: Wedlocked) in the game, and Steve Blum (who also voiced Ares in God of War, Vilgax and Zs'Skayr in the Ben 10 series, Green Goblin in The Spectacular Spider-Man, Killer Croc in the Batman: Arkham series, Amon in The Legend of Korra, Starscream in Transformers: Prime, and Lady Arkham in Telltale's Batman) in the film.

History[]

Banishment to the Inferno[]

Lucifer was once God's most favored Angel, the "Morning Star, the brightest in the sky" as he called himself, and lived in Heaven, having no superior other than the Lord himself. But his great beauty and power sowed a belief that he was a perfect being and he became enraged when God's favorite creation became man. Lucifer gathered an army and attempted to take control of Heaven, but was defeated and lost God's favor. As punishment, he and his minions were cast into Hell, where Lucifer seized control, becoming ruler of the damned.

Taking Beatrice[]

While Dante Alighieri was fighting in the Crusades, Lucifer made a bet with Dante's fiancé, Beatrice Portinari. If Dante kept his vow not to sleep with any woman while he was gone, Beatrice would see his safe return from the war. If not, her Soul would belong to Lucifer.

Lucifer & Beatrice

The lord of the damned won the bet and when Beatrice was killed, he took her Soul to Hell with him. Dante chased after them, determined to save Beatrice from the Inferno while Lucifer constantly taunted him and forced him to undergo flashbacks of his sins to try and break his Spirit. As Dante traveled through the Circle of Anger, he was forced to watch as Lucifer had Beatrice undergo the final ritual to become his bride.

Final Battle with Dante[]

Dantebig 19513

Lucifer battling Dante in his giant form.

After freeing Beatrice from Hell, Dante descended into the Circle of Treachery where he encountered Lucifer in a giant three-faced form trapped in a lake of ice formed from his own frozen tears named Cocytus. Dante succeeded in greatly injuring the Demon, but he only split his stomach open to let out his true form, a corrupted version of his old self with torn wings, large horns, and goat legs.

0012

Lucifer confronting Dante in his true form.

Lucifer revealed that Beatrice had never been the one he sought to use to free himself from Hell, she had simply been bait to draw in Dante. Others had tried to free him before, including Alexander the Great, Attila the Hun, and Lancelot, but they had not been impure enough to get through his outer body. However Dante had been perfect for the job since he had the strength to fight his way through Hell and a soul black enough to free Lucifer. The lord of the damned then began battling Dante on Cocytus, but the demon was overpowered by him. However Lucifer revealed that despite the crusader's defeat of Death, he was still dead and could not leave Hell because of his sins. But Dante called on the souls that he had absolved on his journey and asked that they do the same for him. Seeing the power of the souls, Lucifer realized the unimaginable power and tried to tempt Dante to join him to overthrow God and Heaven together. However, Dante refused and let the Souls poured forth and drove Lucifer back into his imprisoning body, then bound his arms in ice. They then gave Dante passage to Purgatory, but when he arrived there, he tore off the tapestry on his chest, which formed into a snake and Lucifer's laugh was heard, implying that he is either not defeated, or a small fragment of himself managed to escape from the Inferno, planning to bide his time until the right moment to strike again.

Personality[]

Yield to my supremacy!
~ Lucifer

Lucifer is a highly cunning and intelligent individual who convinces his followers to do his bidding by making faustian bargains with them. He often makes his foes undergo harsh challenges and trials before they can face him. Lucifer is a proud and calculating Demon that takes great delight in punishing the damned, the impure find terrible punishment at the hands of Lucifer for their sins. Lucifer is arrogant and prideful, believing himself superior to mankind, and was insulted when Dante attacked him in the ninth circle due to his misanthropy. He is also cowardly, attempting to persuade Dante to work with him when Dante prepares to imprison him once again.

In the animated movie, he stated that he introduced sin into the world, but mankind on its own was responsible for spreading it like a plague.

Powers and Abilities[]

As an immortal creation of God Himself, Lucifer is a god-like celestial being of immense supernatural power. After his fall from Paradise and becoming the ruler of Hell, he gained incredible demonic abilities. Lucifer is the most powerful being in all of Hell. His only rival is Archangel Michael and the only one more powerful than either is God.

  • Nigh-Omniscience: Lucifer possesses a vast intellect, due to being older than Creation and knowing many, if not most of it's greatest secrets. He gave damned souls the ability to foresee future events, but to be cursed to never know the present, which implies that he may also be able to see the future. This was further implied in the animated movie as he was able to show Beatrice many events in history that were beyond her lifetime, from the Crusades to World War II.
  • Nigh-Omnipresence: Lucifer is capable of manifesting himself nearly everywhere in different forms, such as when he manifests himself as a snake during the game's final scene.
    • Teleportation: Lucifer can appear and disappear at will. He possesses some degree of omnipresence.
    • Astral Projection: Lucifer can travel through Hell and Earth via a shadowy version of himself. This shadow self is tangible and attacks with magic as it ignited an entire forest by uttering a Satanic Latin spell. The shadow possesses superhuman strength as it lifted Dante off the ground with one hand. In the animated film, it also appeared to be able to shapeshift and change it's size.
  • Shapeshifting: Lucifer can take the form of a snake. In the anime, he could disguise himself as Dante, various Pagans murdered during the Crusades, and even as God Himself.
  • Nigh-Omnipotence: In the pits of hell, where he's trapped, he displays a few levels of omnipotence, as he can easily create tornadoes, use immeasurable strength and even slam Dante so far from him to force him to run through him in order to face him.
  • Immortality: Lucifer is immortal and existed before mankind and even the universe itself. He is not subject to aging or any degradation through the passing of time.
    • Healing Factor: Lucifer is not subject to disease. He instantly recovered from being stabbed in the chest by Death's Scythe, and he withstood the effects of Dante's cross attacks and the souls that were set upon him without any lasting effects.
  • Invulnerability: Being an immortal Archangel, Lucifer could not be killed, destroyed or die by any means and was the only being who could not perish in the Inferno. While Dante was able to kill the other Fallen Angels, he could only re-imprison Lucifer. However, since Lucifer was created by God, he can still be destroyed by Him and potentially by his brother, Michael. Death's Scythe was shown to be able to hinder Lucifer, but not kill him. Dante had to find other means to defeat Lucifer. In the anime, Lucifer's defeat is very different from how he was defeated in the game. Dante was helpless against Lucifer once he was freed and resorted to prayer in the hopes of God subduing Lucifer before he escaped into Purgatory. Dante's prayer was heard and Lucifer was encased in ice by God.
  • Supernatural Physical Abilities: Lucifer is thousands of times faster, stronger and resistannt than any other creature in the Universe and became even more powerful after his fall from grace.
    • Supernatural Strength: Lucifer is unfathomably physically strong. The Chains of Judecca that bound his first form (a much weaker form than his true form) had to be anchored throughout the nine circles of Hell to keep his arms from moving. In the final battle, in his true form, Lucifer could also create massive tremors via punching the ground, causing great shockwaves.
    • Supernatural Mobility: Lucifer is swift, his reflexes are far beyond those of normal humans and even lesser angels and he's able to move so quickly that he can easily catch Dante off guard.
    • Supernatural Durability: Lucifer is highly resistant to injury. Though holy magic can affect him, it seems that it's effects are more of a hindrance rather than outright harm.
    • Supernatural Stamina: Lucifer is not subject to fatigue and can exert himself at full capacity indefinitely.
  • Flight: Lucifer can fly and hover even without his wings.
  • Magic: Lucifer has a great knowledge of black sorcery which he can fire powerful unholy projectile attacks, channel his energies into the ground, absorb and redirect enemy magic attacks and create a personal force field to protect himself from holy magic. He can open portals to the other worlds like Purgatory. He can even destroy immortal weapons like Death's Scythe. He granted magical powers to the unholy priests of Hell and can also provide it for Satanic rituals on Earth.
  • Sword of Lucifer: He possesses a large, powerful sword that he can channel his energies into. It was most likely the very sword he wielded during the War in Heaven. He can summon this sword at will and it sometimes appears on fire.
  • Elementumkinesis: Lucifer is capable of manipulating the elements in both his fake and his true form, summoning and using them at very high extents:
    • Pyrokinesis: Lucifer can create and control hellish fire.
    • Aerokinesis: Lucifer can summon powerful hellish winds and tornadoes.
    • Cryokinesis: Lucifer can create and manipulate hellish ice and cold to his will.
  • Necromancy: Lucifer has shown some control over the undead. In the animated movie, he was able to summon an army of zombies to devour Dante's horse.
  • Angel of God: Lucifer is arguably the most powerful angel created by God and is only matched equally in terms of power by his brother Michael. Even the other Fallen Angels in Hell do not pose a challenge to him. All angels possessed free will which is why Lucifer could choose to rebel against God.
  • Dominion over Hell: All demons and beings of Hell (with the exception of the other Fallen Angels who had free will) must obey Lucifer's will. All of the tortures in Hell are devised by Lucifer. He can damn the souls to Hell even if they are free of sin and Heaven-bound should they make a wager with him and lose. The animated film and comics implied that he can choose to give the damned souls at least a thousand years free of torture, but could not set any souls free as only God has the power to do so. Despite all of this, God is the one who created everything. Therefore, Lucifer is still a prisoner of Hell just like every other soul that was damned in the Inferno. Lucifer is seen to be able to exert some control over the fabric of Hell itself such as altering the Hall of Gluttons into a puzzle-like obstacle course while displaying taunting images of Beatrice's death in the fog to torment and mock Dante.
  • Minions: Lucifer has an endless number of minions, worshipers and followers. One-third of the angels of Heaven pledged their allegiance to him. The dwellers, night-fiends and demons of Hell all serve his every whim. He also has many followers on Earth who gather in his churches. Among these are the Satanists who established cults in tribute to him.
  • Telepathy: Lucifer also possesses some telepathic capabilities as he was able to mentally communicate with Dante, taunting him as he descended deeper into Hell, all while still being imprisoned within the heart of Cocytus.
  • Telekinesis (anime only): In the anime, Lucifer displays some degree of telekinesis, pulling Beatrice towards him against her will, embracing her as he does so in order to “admire her”.

Trivia[]

  • In The Divine Comedy, Lucifer was placed in the deepest part of the ninth circle of Hell, frozen up to his waist. He was depicted with three heads, which gnawed upon the three greatest traitors of history: Brutus, Cassius, and Judas Iscariot.
  • In the video game Dante's Inferno, Lucifer was voiced by John Vickery and in the animated movie of the same name, he was voiced by Steve Blum, who also voiced Ares in God of War, a game that had many similarities to Dante's Inferno. His Japanese voice actor was Banjo Ginga who has voiced Heihachi Mishima.
  • As Dante transverses the Circles of Hell, he needs to break links in walls to abseil on walls and get to the next circle. Each time he does so, Lucifer's laugh is heard, indicating these are the chains holding him in place. This is further supported by Lucifer praising Dante for breaking the chains of Judecca before their final battle.
  • Lucifer seemed to have a slouch in his step in his true form, but it is unknown if this is an injury or because of his lower body being that of a goat.
Lord Lucifer

Lord Lucifer in his true form as a seemingly-animalistic winged demon as seen in Dante's Inferno: An Animated Epic.

  • His true form (with both the human-like face in the video game and the seemingly full animal-like face in the animated film) resembles Baphomet, a mythical occult figure allegedly worshipped by the accused Templar Knights, who was depicted as a winged, goat-legged demon with an inverted pentagram as his symbol. The inverted pentagram, a known symbol of Satanism, is seen engraved with flames in Lake Cocytus.
  • During the second part of his battle with Dante, Lucifer said to “remember the rebellion” that he lead against God.
  • On his right arm is an amulet resembling a serpent.
  • Lucifer is known for making deals with people, such as Beatrice. He also made one with Cleopatra, that she and Marc Antony could be together forever and attempted to make one with Dante, that they would work together and rule all three kingdoms of the afterlife. In the animated movie, he made one with Alighiero that if he killed Dante, he would receive 1000 years free of torment and endless gold.
  • Lucifer has an aged appearance in his true form, suggesting that demons can age and grow old, though at a rate different from humans, but this may have simply been a result of shape shifting.
  • Lucifer seems to have the element of fire represent him, which would make it easy to escape since he was imprisoned in a frozen lake. It is possible that his first form simply gave him different powers that he gained by adapting to his prison and limited him from using fire.
  • Lucifer's true form bears a resemblance to the fallen angels seen in the Inferno so it is likely that goat legged demon forms are common amongst those who fell from Heaven's grace.
  • Despite the fact that his wings are gone, torn off to be nothing more than stumps, Lucifer is able to fly with ease, but this ability may come from some type of inherent power.
