If we're going to date, you may need to defeat my Seven Evil Exes.
~ Ramona

The League of Evil Exes (aka The League of Ramona's Evil Exes) are the main antagonists of the graphic novel series Scott Pilgrim and its movie and game adaptations Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and the tritagonists of the Netflix anime Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.

They are all the 6 ex-boyfriends (and 1 ex-girlfriend) of a girl named Ramona Flowers, and when she starts to date the titular character, Scott Pilgrim, she reveals he must defeat them all first.

History[]

The League of Evil Exes

From left to right: Matthew, Lucas, Todd, Roxie, Ken, Kyle and Gideon.

Right at the show of Pilgrim's band, the "Sex Bob-omb", during a "battle of the bands", he is attacked by the first ex, Matthew Patel, and after defeating him, Ramona tells him the conditions he needs to fulfill in order to be her boyfriend.

The story goes as Scott defeats the Evil Exes one by one, learning more about their previous relationships with Ramona. It gets worse, however, when he finally reaches the final ex, Gideon Graves, who is also the manager of his band.

They meet at the Chaos Theater raised by Gideon and both fight over her. However, even confessing his love isn't enough as Pilgrim is defeated and sent into a limbo. But he manages to escape due to an extra life (the movie has many game references and mechanics) and finally defeats Gideon, starting his relationship anew.

Members[]

The league was founded two weeks prior to the events of Volume 1 after Gideon found them online and manipulated them into joining him by making them think Ramona was the cause of their unhappiness.

  • Matthew Patel - The first ex, Ramona's shortest relationship. He is an avid Indian fighter with the ability to levitate, summon fireballs and a demon known as a "Demon Hipster Chick".
  • Lucas Lee - The second ex, a professional skateboarder and also a professional movie star. A very selfish man, his arrogance can sometimes lead to very dangerous stunts, and much to Scott's delight, his downfall.
  • Todd Ingram - The third ex, a bass player for a band named "Clash at Demonhead". He follows a rigid vegan diet that somehow resulted in his psychic powers, and as a bonus, dates Scott's ex-girlfriend, Natalie "Envy" Adams. But at the same time he eats non-vegan foods in secrecy, he cheats on Envy with other girls over and over. The only way to beat him is to take out his powers.
  • Roxanne Richter - The fourth ex, and the only woman/lesbian in the group. She is a "half-ninja" with a severe inferiority complex, who taught Ramona much of her subspace powers. She is also the only ex Scott refuses to fight, due to him being unable to hit girls or anyone with a sword.
  • The Katayanagi Twins - The fifth and sixth exes, a pair of Japanese twins named Kyle and Ken who constantly finish each other's sentences. They are both famous Japanese musicians and roboticists who use robots to fight Scott, also using their music as an area-wide attack. They left Ramona after figuring out she was cheating on them with each other.
  • Gideon Gordon Graves - The seventh and final ex, the League's leader and founder, hinted to be Ramona's most recent boyfriend previous to Scott, and the main antagonist in the series. He is the owner of the Chaos Theatre, never seen until the end of Volume 3 in the books. Gideon sometimes appears to be a scientist, and also works as the Sex Bob-omb's manager under the alias of "G-Man". His power is called "emotional warfare", an ability that traps people inside their own minds with their own issues. He used this power to constantly be with Ramona inside her head, causing her to never truly leave him. In the movie, he also keeps Ramona close to him, only this time he uses microchips implanted on her head.

Powers and Abilities[]

Matthew Patel[]

Capturep8

Matthew uses his astral capabilities to defeat Gideon Graves in combat atop G-Man Media Tower.

  • Mystic powers - Despite being the lowest-ranked Evil Ex, Matthew Patel possessed mystic powers which included:
    • Demon Hipster Chicks - Matthew was able to summon Demon Hipster Chicks that could shoot fireballs.
    • Levitation - Matthew can levitate as soon as he summons the Demon Hipster Chicks.
    • Fireballs - Through way of his Demon Hipster Chicks, Matthew could also summon fireballs.
    • Astral Capabilities - In Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, Matthew can summon numerous astral arms and weapons. These astral capabilities can interact with the real world, such as when he uses an astral trident to knock Gideon's sword out of his hands.
  • Expert fighting skills - Matthew was good at fighting due him presumably being ex-military

Lucas Lee[]

  • Strength - Lucas was the only Ex to not have some sort of special ability. However, he makes up for it with insane strength. This was shown when he fought Scott and threw across the Casa Loma

Todd Ingram[]

  • Vegan powers - Due to being a hardcore vegan, Todd had numerous superpowers, practically making him a superhuman. These mainly included psychic powers such as telekinesis such as when he telekinetically strangles Scott and throws Envy across the room. Todd is allowed to keep these powers so long as conforms to a strictly vegan diet.

Roxanne Richter[]

  • Control over Subspace - Due to being the one who taught Ramona about subspace, Roxanne's subspace capabilities were on the same level as Ramona's. This was shown when she invades Scott's dreams and tries to kill him.
  • Phasing - Roxanne was able to phase through Scott and Ramona and attack them from behind.
  • Swordsmanship - Roxanne was a very skilled swordfighter.
  • Superspeed - Roxanne had a superspeed ability, shown when she first attack's Scott.
  • Teleportation - Roxanne was able to teleport. She used this when she first encounters Scott.

The Katayanagi Twins[]

  • Expert roboticists - The Kataynagis were very good at building robots which they send to fight Scott.
  • Twin-Link - Little is known about their "Twin-Link" but it presumably allowed them to fight Scott at the same time with powers such as the Double-Hurricane Kick.
  • Martial arts - The Twins were both very good at martial arts, shown during their final fight against Scott.

Gideon Graves[]

  • Control over the Glow - Gideon was the creator of the Glow, a weaponized form of emotional warfare that traps the victims in their head with their personal issues. Gideon could manually infect a single person with it and could infect entire crowds by using it as a laser. Gideon is immune to the Glow due to being trapped in his own head from the day he was born.
  • Control over Ramona's mind - When inside Ramona's head, Gideon was all-powerful and could change shape. He loses this ability when Ramona finally casts him out.
  • Expert fighter - Gideon was a skilled fighter, managing to land numerous blows on Scott as well as stealing Scott's sword.
  • Mastermind - Gideon manipulated most of the events throughout the series hoping Scott and Ramona would stay together. this failed when Ramona left in the end of Volume 5.
  • Memory Manipulation - Gideon was able to manipulate Scott's memories and change them up. This was evident when Scott rescued Kim from a kid named Simon Lee when in reality he punched Simon simply due to the act of hugging Kim.
  • Master swordsmanship - Gideon was very good with a sword and was the only one to kill Scott and seriously injure Ramona.

Trivia[]

  • Despite being evil, the League does seem to abide by certain unwritten rules, namely that they can't gang up on Scott all at once. Instead, each member must challenge Scott in the order they dated Ramona, however, Kyle and Ken Katayanagi violate this rule by fighting Scott side-by-side (though they justify this by pointing out that Ramona cheated on them at the same time). Roxie also violates this rule in the film when she tries to attack Scott before his encounter with Todd Ingram. The League (with the exception of Gideon) also tries not to inflict any physical harm on Ramona herself - as she is the reason they exist in the first place. Gideon, though, breaks this rule, when he fatally stabs Ramona in the back in Volume 6.
  • Whenever one of the members of the league is defeated, a prize is earned in coins, as well as additional prizes. This is a reference to River City Ransom and No More Heroes, where coins are earned every time an enemy is defeated.
  • Right before every fight in the movie, a versus symbol (VS) appears between Scott and the evil ex.
  • In the trailers for the movie, when the faces of all the Evil Exes are shown, Lucas Lee's face is at the center space instead of Gideon.
  • Though they all appear to die and disintegrate into coins after they are defeated, they don't at all die. They just simply respawn back to their homes, having learned their lessons. They also wouldn't consider a vendetta on Scott anymore since they would find it boring and not worth the effort anymore (and traveling from the US to Canada would cost a lot. They all live in the US.) Details here and here.
    • This received further confirmation is Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, where in an alternate timeline, after defeating the Exes, Older Scott starts a band with the Twins in the future, called "Pop'n TwinBee" (Though it is unknown how the Twins manage to come back to Canada, in spite of travel cost). This is also seen during the battle against an Even Older Scott, where all of the Exes (including Knives Chau, Julie Powers, Stephen Stills, Kim Pine and Young Neil) have respawned back into the theater play upon being defeated, showing that they truly didn't die at all.
  • Scott Pilgrim vs. The Animation is the only piece of Scott Pilgrim media that doesn't feature the League, or most of the other main characters. The reason being that the short only adapts the flashback sequence at the start of Volume 2, detailing Scott's high school years, his relationship with Kim Pine and his band with Kim and his old friend Lisa Miller.
