Old Ghis ruled an empire when the Valyrians were still f-cking sheep, and we are the sons of the harpy.
~ Master Kraznys to Daenerys Targaryen.

Kraznys mo Nakloz is a minor antagonist in the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series and its television adaptation, Game of Thrones. He is a member of the House of Nakloz (possibly the head) and one of the Good Masters, the ruling elite of the city of Astapor, and is a rude and arrogant slaver. He deals primarily in Unsullied.

Kraznys is played by the British actor Dan Hildebrand.

Biography[]

Kraznys is first encountered when Daenerys Targaryen arrives in Astapor in search of an army to purchase to help her take the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms in Westeros. Daenerys feigns not understanding High Valyrian and only speaks in the common tongue, so Kraznys speaks to her via a 10-year-old slave and scribe named Missandei. Kraznys, believing Daenerys does not understand him, repeatedly insults Daenerys and her companions. At the Plaza of Pride, he shows her a group of 1,000 Unsullied, who have been marched out of their barracks for her inspection. As Daenerys observes the plaza's fountain and its great bronze harpy, Kraznys unpolitely tells her to lower her eyes, for he deals in meat, not metal, and the bronze statue is not for sale.

Kraznys boasts to Daenerys how the Unsullied have been standing in the Plaza of Pride for a day and a night with no food and no water. He demonstrates their loyalty and fighting prowess when he cuts off the nipple of a Lysene Unsullied and explains some major parts of their training. He tells Daenerys that the Unsullied's training starts at age five and is from dawn to dusk. The training is brutal and merciless, designed not only to teach the Unsullied how to fight but also to strip away all individuality, empathy, and self-worth from them. When a slave fails any single aspect of this training, he is killed, and only a third of the slaves in training survive to become Unsullied.

Kraznys confirms that the Unsullied are all eunuchs, entirely castrated, with both their penis and testicles cut. Their manhoods are burned at the altar of the Lady of Spears, the goddess of the Unsullied. Kraznys admits that by removing their manhoods, the Unsullied cannot be as strong and brutal as whole men, such as Westerosi knights, but this is more than made up for by discipline, and the Unsullied are entirely disciplined and obedient. Kraznys points out they are unable to rape, and they are known as the finest foot in the known world, adding that the city watch of the Free City of Qohor is mainly made out of Unsullied, all bought from Astapor, which is the sole place where they are trained and made.

Kraznys tells Daenerys how the day a slave boy is cut, he is given a puppy to take care of. At the end of the first year, after having established a bond with the puppy, as well as having it as a source of comfort, the boy is made to strangle the puppy. Should he fail to do so, he is killed and fed to the surviving dogs. Boys in training are culled whenever they fail a task, be it running all day in full gear, scaling a mountain at night, or walking across a bed of coals. At the end of their training, the Unsullied must take a silver mark, go to any of the slave markets of Astapor, buy a newborn slave child, and kill it before its mother's eyes, all in order to prove that they lost all humanity and became ruthless and merciless soldiers. For the loss, they pay the infant slave's owner with the silver mark, and for their success, they win their spiked cap and officially become Unsullied. Daenerys is noticeably disturbed by the Unsullied's life and type of training, developing a strong contempt for the Good Masters of Astapor.

The following day, Daenerys meets with Kraznys, Grazdan mo Ullhor, and another Good Master. Kraznys is initially dismissive of her offer to buy all eight thousand Unsullied and all the boys in training her offer, claiming that she can afford barely more than one hundred Unsullied at the price of her Pentoshi ship. In response, Daenerys states that she has dragons. After some haggling, Kraznys reluctantly agrees to sell her all of his Unsullied in return for Drogon, the largest dragon. In addition, Daenerys demands to have his scribe and translator, Missandei, as a token. Eager to possess a dragon of his own, Kraznys agrees.

Kraznys goes to observe the execution of the deal on the Plaza of Punishment. As he tries to pacify Drogon, Kraznys complains that Drogon is not cooperating with him. At that point, Daenerys reveals that she is fluent in High Valyrian, telling Kraznys that dragons are not slaves. To his horror, Kraznys realizes that Daenerys understood everything he had said since the moment she arrived in Astapor, as she tells him that she is Daenerys Stormborn of House Targaryen and that Old Valyrian is her mother tongue.

Daenerys then turns her back to Kraznys, ordering her new army to slay all the Masters, soldiers, and any man holding a whip. She further orders the Unsullied to not harm any children and to free any other slaves they come across. As Kraznys frantically tries to order the Unsullied to kill Daenerys, she issues a simple command to Drogon: "Dracarys." Drogon immediately incinerates Kraznys as the Unsullied sack Astapor.

Following the sack of Astapor, Daenerys frees her Unsullied army from slavery, all of whom walk past the still-smoldering corpse of Kraznys. Astapor is left under the command of three Ghiscari citizens: a healer, a scholar, and a priest, who become the ruling council of Astapor, independent from Daenerys, who just plans to sail to Westeros. A time later, Astapor is subsequently taken by the freedman Cleon, a slave butcher who served Grazdan mo Ullhor. During Daenerys' rule at Meereen, the city falls into chaos and civil war until it's sacked and destroyed by the Wise Masters of Yunkai and their army, which includes sellswords companies. Astapor is left in ruin and depopulated, and numerous refugees go to Meereen.

It was mentioned by survivors of the Siege of Astapor that the pyramid of Kraznys' family, the House of Nakloz, was set aflame by the population of Astapor when the Yunkai besieged the city. It was set ablaze by the population because they blamed the late Kraznys for their woes.

Game of Thrones[]

Legacy[]

When the Slaver Alliance besieged Meereen and tried to force Daenerys to surrender, the two Wise Masters, Razdal mo Eraz and Yezzan zo Qaggaz, and the Volantene noble, Belicho Paenymion, stated that Daenerys had stolen the Unsullied and Missandei from Kraznys and that they both would remain to be sold to the highest bidder. However, they soon learned that Daenerys had agreed to meet with them to discuss their surrender, a point made clear when Drogon, Viserion, and Rhaegal began burning their fleets while the Dothraki and Second Sons fought against the Sons of the Harpy.
