Either Reiner, Bertolt, or Annie: ...Oh. So that King Fritz is just a figurehead.
Either Reiner, Bertolt, or Annie: Not just the old man. It's a different family entirely. They're all puppets without a shred of authority. But they're probably not Subjects of Ymir. The people ruling from the center of the Walls are probably a different race of Eldians who sucked up to Fritz a century ago.
~ Reiner, Bertolt, and Annie discussing the false Fritz royal family.

The King of the Fritz royal family is a minor antagonist in Attack on Titan .

He is the false King of humanity within the Walls, until a coup d'état from the military during 850. While his family's surname is Fritz, they pose as members of the First King's royal family which ruled the "last remnants" of the human race. In reality, King Fritz and his family are not real members of the royal family, and are only noble servants and supporters of the real royal family of Reiss.

The fake King covers the role of the Reiss, who rule from the shadows, while posing as a family of regional lords. King Fritz acts a substitute for Rod Reiss, the real King of the Walls and descendant of the royal family. The spies Reiner Braun, Bertolt Hoover, and Annie Leonhart speculate that the fake king belongs to a race of Eldians that are not Subjects of Ymir, but aligned themselves with Karl Fritz a century ago during the Great Titan War.

After the coup and Rod's death, Fritz is replaced by Historia Reiss, although she is a memmber of the military put by regiment leaders on top, in order for them to control the government, like the Assembly's nobility did with Fritz. After the puppet king is deposed, the military estabilishes its rule over the Walls and Premier Zachary assumes complete control over the administration.

Biography[]

King Fritz was the highest authority within the Walls and he was noted for his continued support of the Survey Corps despite the popular opinion against them. In reality however he was just a symbolic figure with no true authority and a puppet king, his noble family being servants of the Reiss family. King Fritz acted as a substitute for the true King of the Walls, Rod Reiss.

This old King was careless, apathetic, lazy and possibly alcoholic (due to a bottle of alcohol being seen beside him). Although he owned a crown, he had a habit of not wearing it during meetings in his throne room. At least by the time of the years 845 to 850, he apparently had gone senile, and thus his only concerns became only petty things such as eating. He seemed pretty unconcerned about the critical situation wihin the Walls and the ongoing deaths, due to his mind possibly deteriorating in his age. The true powers ruling over humanity within the Walls were a much larger conspiracy, although Fritz was supposed to be one of them as one of the noble families who are not Subjects of Ymir. In fact, one of the ruling ministers, Aurille, expressed frustration at Fritz's lack of cooperation and inability to play his role with them. During the year 850, the Survey Corps became a threat to the Royal Government's desire to maintain the old status quo and preserve the peace within the Walls that was estabilished by the First King a century ago.

Due to the betrayal of Premier Dhalis Zachary and all the leaders of the military turning against them, the Royal Assembly and the Interior Military Police Brigade lost control of Capital Mitras and the Walls, and King Fritz and all the nobles were arrested in the coup d'état. It is unknown what happened to him after his removal and the arrest of the noble rulers, but he is not seen along with them in prison later. He might have been sent back to his family in their residence in the Interior.
