Kareem Saïd (formerly Goodson Truman) is a character in the HBO show Oz. He is a Muslim minister and black nationalist sent to prison for blowing up a white-owned warehouse.

Biography[]

Formerly a nihilistic drug dealer, Saïd converted to Islam and became a famous activist known for advocating for black nationalism before being sent to Oz for blowing up a white-owned warehouse. Saïd becomes leader of the Muslim inmates and is immediately viewed as a thret by Aryan leader Vern Schillinger and head of the homeboys, Jefferson Keane. Said clashes with Keane when he tries to stop his men from selling drugs. Said is able to convert and rehabilitate Keane who'se death deeply saddens  him.

Said also has problems the Unit Manager of Emerald City, Tim McManus who puts restrictions on the Muslims by taking away their rights to practice their religion.

When Donald Groves's murder of Lawrence Smith leads to several inmates being attacked by guards  Said is left a gun to defend himself by a sympathetic guard.

Said then helps instigate a riot leading to the deaths of several inmates and guards.

Said uses his legal knowledge to help Augustus Hill and even Schillinger  fight their legal battles in the hopes of getting reduced sentences. Said is offered a pardon by Governor Devlin in the hopes of increasing his popularity with the Muslim and black voters but Said courageously refuses the offer, humiliating Devlin and gaining  the respect of McManus.

Said sues the prison for brutality and begins having regular contact with Tricia, the sister of deceased inmate Scott Ross who he begins to fall for. Schillinger notices this and tells the other Muslims Said had "Goo Goo eyes for a white girl". Said asks McManus to allow him to fast who then tries to leverage this to get him to drop the lawsuit(To protect his ex Dianne Whittlesy who killed Scott Ross during the riot) Said then goes on hunger strike forcing McManus to give into his demands.

When Augustus rats on Malcolm Coyle for killing an innocent family Said organizes a meeting with Antonio Nappa, Schillinger and Guerra. He is able to appeal to their family  values to convince all of them to protect Hill. Nappa  takes matters into his own hands and orders Coyle's death.

Said tries to help Tobias Beecher cope with the guilt he feels for the for the death of  Schillinger's son Andrew. The other Muslims who were already angry at him for his romantic interest  in Tricia, disapprove of his friendship with the white Beecher and cast him out of their group.

As the racial tension heightens in Oz Beecher and Said are the only men of different races to remain friends.

When New Unit Manager Martin Querns makes a deal with Simon Adebisi to turn a blind eye to all criminal activity so long as there's no acts of violence Said plans to expose Querns's corruption by falsely befriending Adebisi. Said finds the video tapes proving Adebisi's criminal activity he gives them to McManus who then brings them to Warden Glynn who fires Querns. Adebisi then makes an attempt on Said's life who kills him in self-defense. Despite his dislike for him McManus testifies on  Said's behalf and gets him cleared of charges relating to Adebisi's death.

James Robson pays Adebisi's friend Leroy Tidd to fake a conversion to Islam in order to get close to Said and kill him. Tidd's conversion becomes real  and he dies protecting Said from Carl Jenkins who was hired by Robson. Said is taunted by Schillinger and Robson over  Tidd's  death and uncharacteristically resorts to violence by beating Robson severely.

Said sees that Schillinger and Robson are trying to provoke Beecher into attacking him to ruin his parole. Said then threatens them not to. When Beecher's parole is denied  Schillinger and Robson taunt Beecher and Said defends him by stabbing both of them.

Said agrees to interaction sessions with Schillinger that will be mediated by Beecher. He is also asked by McManus to help rehabilitate disgraced prisoner as McManus believes it will help him hold onto his sanity.

Said later brutally beats Omar when he is caught selling drugs for Burr Redding to inmate Reggie Rawls

Omar attacks Wolfgang Cutler when he learns he's made a deal with Schillinger to kill Said and be initiated into the brotherhood. Said then tries to talk McManus out of sending him to solitary, to no avail.

Said meets a man posing as a news reporter called Lemuel Idzik who kills him by Shooting him twice in the stomach. Said's last words are to tell his friend Zahir Arif not to harm him.

Personality[]

Saïd is a charismatic, intelligent, and deeply religious man who follows the practice of Islam faithfully and truly believes in reforming the justice system. However, while Saïd's goals are well-meaning, he is prone to using amoral tactics to make his point and taking advantage of the people around him to do so. Following the riot, Saïd comes to regret his crimes and ultimately reforms, switching to attempting to genuinely help his fellow prisoners.

Saïd is deeply egotistical and self-righteous as well. At times, his activism can degrade into little more than a way to feed his own ego.
