This is the Age of Steel and I am its creator.
~ Lumic after his conversion.
And how will you do that from beyond the grave?
~ Lumic taunting a worker before killing him.
I will bring peace to the world... Everlasting peace, and unity, and uniformity.
~ Lumic as the Cyber-Controller to the Doctor, Rose Tyler, and Pete Tyler.

John Lumic is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside Queen Victoria) of Series 2 of the Doctor Who revival series.

He appears as the main antagonist of the two-parter Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel as well as the overarching antagonist in the finale Army of Ghosts/Doomsday. He is the creator of an alternate reality version of the Cybermen.

He was portrayed by the late Roger Lloyd-Pack.

Biography[]

Beginning[]

Lumic

John Lumic was born in an alternate dimension, where he would become the founder and owner of the innovative tech company, Cybus Industries. One of the company's most notable inventions were the EarPods, earpieces that allowed the download of information directly into the brain. Unbeknownst to the public, however, these devices could also be used to help Lumic access information in people's minds.

Despite fending off public rumors of ill health, in reality, Lumic was terminally ill and confined in a wheelchair. This poor health resulted in Lumic becoming obsessed with immortality. This obsession with immortality led to his invention of the Cybermen; where the human brain is removed and placed in a robotic suit of armour and are devoid of emotion due to an emotional inhibitor. Lumic considers the Cybermen the Ultimate Upgrade and he created an advertisement of the Ultimate Upgrade to showcase to the President (prime Minister) of Great Britain; hoping he will grant him permission. However, the President regards the Ultimate Upgrade to be obscene and denies the permission, despite Lumic’s pleas. Even though he has not obtained permission, Lumic still continues with the Ultimate Upgrade, instructing his colleague, Mr Crane to steal homeless people and convert them into Cybermen.

Lumic sends an army of Cybermen to the Tyler residence during Jackie’s party, where they assassinate (delete) the President and other people at the party. After this, Lumic broadcasts a mind control signal through the EarPods of everyone in London; instructing them to walk to his headquarters in Battersea Power Station and walk into the conversion chambers to be converted into Cybermen. Mr Crane pulls out his EarPods before the signal was broadcast and he is taken and brought to Lumic by Cybermen. Mr Crane apologises for his EarPods malfunctioning and requests a free upgrade to become a Cyberman. However, this is just a ruse to get close to Lumic, as once he is close enough, he pulls the wiring out of Lumic’s life support system in his wheelchair, weakening him. The Cybermen jump to Lumic’s aid and electrocute Mr Crane, but due to the damage caused by his sabotage, the Cybermen forcefully take Lumic to the conversion chambers against his protests; where he is upgraded and converted into the Cyber-Controller.

The Cyber-Controller[]

As the Cyber-Controller, Lumic confronts the Doctor, Pete and Rose in his main chambers while Jake and Mickey have snuck onto Lumic’s zeppelin to turn off the signal in the EarPods. This is successfully done and everyone flees the factory before they can be converted. Lumic refuses to admit defeat, saying the Cybermen will upgrade humanity by force even if the EarPods have failed. Jake and Mickey then discover the code to shut off the emotional inhibitor in every Cyberman. They message this to the Doctor who then inputs the code into the system, removing the Cybermen’s emotional inhibitors, killing them due to being overloaded by emotions. As the Doctor, Pete and Rose flee the exploding factory in order to escape in the zeppelin piloted by Jake and Mickey, Lumic pulls himself free from his throne and chases after the trio in anger after losing his Cybermen. As they make their way to the zeppelin and climb up the rope ladder to enter, it is suddenly jerked by a sudden weight; Lumic climbing up after them in anger. The Doctor passes Pete his sonic screwdriver, who uses it to break the ladder from below where he is climbing. The ladder is severed, plunging a screaming Lumic into the exploding factory to his death.

Even after his death, his Cybermen lived on. Jake and Mickey regroup as the Preachers and proceed to wage war on the Cybermen; where they successfully lock every Cybermen in their factories. While debate arose wherever what to do with the Cybermen, it gave them ample time to regroup and escape their factories and cross over into the Doctor’s world.

Personality[]

Lumic took immense pride in his creations, the Cybermen. In his eyes, they weren't machines; instead he treated them like they were living creatures, and berated one of his scientists said his test Cyberman was "working." He was charismatic and likable to the public; however, to his subordinates, he was insane, ruthless and massively sadistic. Before having one of his scientists deleted by his Cybermen, there was joy and ecstasy in his voice while watching the man be murdered.

He was clever as he managed to build his business, and get the government to approve of his EarPods, which he used to steal information. Not to mention he was very delusional believing that converting everyone would be a complete improvement of humanity, despite the fact that they would be unable to reproduce, or feel happiness.

Trivia[]

  • Lumic's actor, Roger Lloyd Pack, also portrayed Barty Crouch Sr. in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Crouch's son, Barty Crouch Jr., is portrayed by David Tennant, who played the 10th Doctor.
  • Several parallels existed between Lumic and Davros, creator of the Daleks. Both Davros and Lumic relied on life support machines, yet also seemed to have a sense of superiority to others among their species. They both also tried to conquer their respective home planets by converting or mutating their own kind into an emotionless and militaristic race. Interestingly, both of their creations eventually worked out that their respective creators deserved the same fate as any other inferior beings, with Davros being exterminated and Lumic being forcibly Cyber-converted.
