I've killed so many people I've lost count. I can't come back from this. I'm a monster. I can feel the anger inside me. But I am still, somewhere inside me, more than that. Better than that.
~ Jason if he chose his friends.

Jason Brody is the main protagonist of the 2012 first-person shooter game Far Cry 3 and the secondary antagonist of the Vaas: Insanity DLC in Far Cry 6.

Jason is a unique figure as he, although being portrayed as a heroic protagonist as the game starts, with trying to save his friends from being enslaved and sold out, ends up developing extremely sadistic tendencies as the game progresses, after rejecting the opportunity to abandon the violence and leave the island with his friends, to the point of even becoming a villain depending on the player's final choice in the last mission. He is also Vaas Montenegro's archenemy.

He was portrayed by Gianpaolo Venuta in motion capture.

Biography[]

Past[]

Jason Brody. From Los Angeles. Great grades, an athlete in college. Only odd jobs after graduating. {...} You have a younger brother, Riley, and you had an older brother, Grant, now deceased.
~ The Survival Guide's description of Jason.

Jason was born sometime in February or March (according to his statement that he's a Pisces) of 1987 in Los Angeles, California and has two siblings: an older brother named Grant and a younger brother named Riley. Before the events of the game, their father passed away, and asked Grant to watch over his younger brothers. Jason would then go off to college where he became an athlete, but started to take odd jobs after graduating.

Jason was a daredevil before Far Cry 3: he enjoyed sports such as bungee jumping, parachuting and many others. He also enjoyed spending time with his friends and brothers: Oliver Carswell, Keith Ramsay, Lisa Snow, Grant, Daisy Lee and Riley. Jason and his friends were partying in Bangkok to celebrate Riley getting his pilot license, then the DJ Doug (whom they knew) recommended they go to an Island nearby for other extreme sports.

Far Cry 3[]

After reaching the island and doing plenty of extreme sports, Jason and his friends are captured and are turned into slaves, however Jason's brother broke him out, but was killed during the escape. Afterwards Jason meets a man called Dennis who says he can help him get his friends back. Dennis has Jason remove a scrambler on a radio tower and hunt boar to improve his gear. After doing so, Jason assists Dennis and the Rakyat in attacking an outpost in the search for Liza, but finds it empty. He manages to find Daisy after she was nursed by Dr. Alec Earnhardt, who sends Brody to find a plant to nurse her back to full health and allows Daisy to stay at his home.

Jason then learns that Liza is personally being held by Vaas, and makes an assault on the prison camp to rescue her, but only finds footage of Vaas tormenting her. Before he could leave, he was knocked unconscious by a pirate and taken to Vaas, who attempts to kill Jason and Liza with fire while leaving with Oliver. Jason manages to rescue Liza before the hotel is burned to the ground, and they escape while being pursued by Vaas's pirates. Taking her to Daisy underneath Earnhardt's home, Daisy reveals that she found a boat, which she can fix so they can escape the island. A little while later, Dennis introduces Jason to Citra, a native who wants a warrior to be her husband. She meant well at first but as the game goes by her interest becomes obsessive where she starts to tell Jason to kill his own friends so he can leave his old life behind to become a warrior.

Citra has Jason drink a hallucinogen, which shows him visions of a "Man in White" and a ancient dagger, and Citra tasks Brody with finding the dagger. Traveling to Badtown, Jason meets the "Man in White", who reveals himself to be Willis Huntley, a Central Intelligence agent who has gained information about Hoyt Volker, a drug and slave trader. Huntley sends Jason to burn down one of Hoyt's drug field so that the kingpin can come to the northern part of the island, as Willis agrees to help Brody find Oliver. After burning down the drug field, Hoyt arrives to the northern part of the island, and Jason manages to save one of Hoyt's informants. The informant gives Jason info on a transport manifest that is holding Oliver, and Brody manages to save his friend and take him to the underground cave with Liza and Daisy.

After saving Oliver, Jason returns to Willis, who points him towards one of Hoyt's hitmen, Bambi "Buck" Hughes, who had bought Keith from Volker. Jason meets with Buck, who sends Brody to collect the ancient dagger (referred to as the "Silver Dragon") across the island. He manages to collect the dagger with the use of an ancient compass, and gives the dagger to Buck and reunites with Keith. Jason learns that Keith has been sexually abused by Buck while under his captivity, and Hughes reveals that he has no intention to let Jason and Keith go. Jason kills Buck with the dagger and takes Keith to the others, who asks Jason to not tell the group about his abuse under Buck. Returning to Citra's temple, Jason gives her the dagger, gaining her trust and she then sends him to help the Rakyat rescue captured civilians.

During the ambush, Jason is captured by Vaas, who attempts to kill him once again by having him drown with a rock tied to his legs. He manages to escape and attempts to save the civilians while trying to escape via a helicopter, but is shot by Vaas and buried underneath corpses. After surviving the incident, Jason returns to Citra, who has him drink another hallucinogen, where he battles an ink monster that Citra spoke of. Jason kills the monster and awakes from the hallucinogen, and gives a speech to the Rakyat that he will lead them to glory. Wanting to end Vaas, Jason travels to his compound where the thug is celebrating Brody's "death" alongside his pirates. However, Vaas reveals that is was awaiting for Jason and sets up an ambush, but Brody manages to kill the pirates and finally Vaas in a dream-like state.

Awaking in the temple with Citra, Jason promises that he will kill Hoyt for her, and tells his friends that he's not leaving the island. Jason then contacts Willis and asks for his assistance in killing Hoyt, but Huntley states it can't be done and that he's preparing to leave to Russia. He asks Willis to drive him over the south part of the island so he can reach Huntley's agent, Sam Becker, who has infiltrated Hoyt's privateers. After skydiving there with the assistance of Willis, Jason makes contact with Becker, who agrees to help him kill Hoyt and stop his enterprises. During his journey of infiltrating the privateers, Jason learns that Riley is alive after Keith told him he was dead. Seeing that he needs to save his brother, Jason helps Sam in destroying Hoyt's satellite and business before playing a game with Volker.

During the game of poker, Hoyt kills Sam and reveals that he knew that Jason was trying to kill him, presumably due to Vaas giving him the footage of Jason and his friends partying, or seeing him speaking to Riley during the interrogation. Jason battles Hoyt in another dream-like state, and kills him alongside the privateers. During the battle, Hoyt reveals that he Riley at the airfield to be sold off in Yemen. Reaching to the airfield, Jason saves Riley and the brothers escape in a helicopter while privateers attempt to kill them. Making it to Dr. Earnhardt's house, they found it in ruins and Jason speaks to the mortally injured doctor, who reveals that the Rakyat attacked and kidnapped his friends. Going to the temple, Jason is drugged by Citra, who attempts to have him forget about his past and embrace his warrior side. Jason is then left with the choice of either killing his friends and staying with Citra, or save his friends and leave the island.

The game ends with either Jason's ritualistic death at the hands of Citra if he chooses to murder his friends and stay with Citra, or Citra's accidental death at the hands of Dennis if Jason chooses to saves his friends and leave the island in order to try and leave the violence behind. If Jason chooses Citra, he is killed and Citra speaks that their child will lead the Rakyat, stating he has won. If Jason chooses his friends, he states that he has become a monster due to his actions, but that he can better. The final shot is of the boat Daisy fixed leaving the island, while the ancient dagger is left in the sand.

Far Cry 4[]

Jason is mentioned by Willis in Far Cry 4, referring to him as a "SoCal douchebag" to Ajay Ghale that he had babysit on his last operation. Hurk also mentions Jason, referring to him as his second "Best Tat Brother", alongside Jack (which is a possible reference to Jack Carver).

Far Cry 6 Vaas: Insanity[]

Jason appears as the secondary antagonist of Far Cry 6 Vaas: Insanity, appearing as a mini-boss through Vaas' broken mind. Brody can also be heard mocking or taunting Vaas, and becomes more of a common mini-boss on harder mind-levels. Although, this was seen in Vaas’ head, it’s yet unknown if Jason is still alive.

Personality[]

Before the events on Rook Island, Jason was described as being immature, aimless yet a thrill-seeker who enjoyed doing extreme sports and partying. He was known to lack confidence and direction, as Liza wanted him to get a job or find a goal, a conversation that is heard during his first drug trip. When faced with a harsh reality on the island, Jason is shown to be afraid and non-confident, but becomes determined to save his friends from Vaas. His adventures and fighting turn Jason into a more confident, brave and smart individual, allowing him to gain the respect of the Rakyat.

After meeting Citra, Jason becomes a powerful warrior, but the more powerful he got the more insane he became. He starts becoming extremely homicidal as the story continues and becomes more sadistic and cruel as he becomes more powerful. Due to his sadistic and cruel nature, he becomes feared by the pirates and privateers, who refer to him as "snow white". His relationships with Liza and his friends become strained and distant, as Jason starts to accept his new identity as the warrior of the Rakyat. Jason starts to embrace his darker side on occasions, but becomes horrified with himself, questioning what he has become after his brutally tortured Riley to prevent his cover from being blown. In addition, Jason showed himself to have a vengeful side, as he declared to personally kill Vaas after learning that Riley was "dead".

Despite this, Jason does maintain his protective, compassionate and loyal side to him through the story, as he saves his friends from the pirates and privateers. His loyalty also extends to his newfound allies, such as Dennis, Citra, Willis, and Sam, as he doesn't hesitate to assist them in stopping Vaas and Hoyt. His protective showed when his friends were hurt, as shown when he declared to kill Buck after finding Keith or when Riley was being abused by Hoyt. Despite the attempts of Citra to make him leave his past, Jason maintained some of his humanity, as he changed his plan to save Riley after learning he was alive. Depending on the player's choice, Jason can save his friends, showing that he had some realization that he was becoming sociopathic.

Jason showed himself to have a humorous and immature side to his personality, as he enjoyed the rush of fighting pirates when escaping with Liza, or destroying Hoyt's drug field with a flamethrower. He is very cultured, making popular references from numerous media, such as Star Wars, Kill Bill, Assassin's Creed, Bioshock, and the board game Battleship. Additionally, Jason is horrified by most of the people he meets on Rook Island, such as being disturbed that Hurk is willing to strap bombs onto monkeys, Buck's sadistic abuse towards Keith, and Vaas and Hoyt enjoying killing innocent people.

Powers and Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Tatau: Jason was given the tatau by Dennis Rogers, which is a mystical tattoo that gives Brody enhanced abilities so he could embrace the path of a warrior.
    • Enhanced Intelligence: With the power of the tatau, Jason's intelligence was enhanced, making him more of a tactical and cunning individual.
    • Enhanced Strength: The Tatau enhanced Jason's strength, allowing him to lift and exert himself with little effort.
    • Enhanced Mobility: He could move at fast speeds, allowing him to sprint across the island without being tired.
    • Enhanced Reflexes: The mystical tattoo enhanced Jason's reflexes, which allowed him to survive conflicts with Buck, Vaas and Hoyt in combat.

Abilities[]

  • Athleticism: A college athlete and daredevil, Jason is at his physical peak due to participating in extreme sports. He is able to sprint at great lengths, jump from great heights while traversing on radio towers, swim at extended periods of time, mountain climb, skydive, and use a wingsuit.

  • Weapons Proficiency: He is capable of wielding any weapon at his disposal, from handguns, rocket launchers, and C4 explosives.
  • Knifemanship: Jason mastered the use of melee, more notably knives during his time on Rook Island. He becomes more experienced with knives with his tatau, allowing him kill enemies with a blade with chained takedowns or from the air. He was able to defeat Vaas Montenegro (who was trained by the Rakyat), Buck Hughes (an ex-Australian soldier), and Hoyt Volker (who had experience in paramilitary groups).
  • Expert Hunter: Jason became an expert hunter during his time on the island, being able to kill animals of all types with the use of weapons and syringes. This allowed him to craft better gear, such as a loot rucksack, weapon holsters, and ammo pouches.
  • Skilled Herbalist: Due to the dangers that lurk on Rook Island, Jason had to learn how to craft syringes that stem from plants.

Trivia[]

  • Jason is one of the protagonist in the series that die at the end of the game, as the protagonist of Far Cry 2 dies in either ending, although Jason dies only in the bad ending.
  • Jason is so far the most powerful and evilest protagonist in the Far Cry series, due to his abilities, murder spree and sadistic behavior against his friends and murder them (though this could only happen in the ending where Jason joins Citra).
    • Although, his culpability for his villainous actions is debatable, since he suffered significant trauma due to Vaas, and he is periodically drugged and manipulated by Citra, as she molds him into a killer for her own purposes.
