Jacques de Aldersberg is the Grand Master of the Order of the Flaming Rose and the main antagonist of the video game The Witcher. He founded the Order upon remnants of the Order of the White Rose but has taken its underlying philosophy in a radical and uncompromising direction.
He was voiced by Andrew Wincott.
Personality[]
Jacques de Aldersberg is a fanatical follower of the Cult of Eternal Fire, wielding his innate "source" powers through sheer force of will (having had no formal training). He aims to overthrow King Foltest, bring about a new age, and destroy all non-humans, whom he views (at best) as relics of the past. He ordered Roderick de Wett to curse Foltest's daughter Adda again to weaken his position.
Using stolen witchers' secrets, and with the aid of the Salamandra organization, Jacques has created mutant soldiers to uphold the increasingly twisted ideas he espouses. It becomes clear that he will stop at nothing to achieve his goals. Before joining the Order, it is rumored that Jacques was a vagrant fueled only by his hatred of non-humans.
Biography[]
Past[]
Information about Jacques de Aldersberg's past is scarce according to a butcher straight from the Trade Guild, Jacques was a trawler who is strongly blinded by hatred for non-humans and when he became a knight of the order he broadcast his felt hatred for non-humans. After the death of Rudolf Valaris Grand Master of the Order of the White Rose, Jacques took over from him as Grand Master, during his reign over the Order Jacques introduced radical reforms that changed the Order's structures and its purpose. After Jacques' changes, the Order of the White Rose was transformed into the Order of the Flaming Rose giving it the symbol of the burning rose which from now on was seen on standards and their armaments becoming the most powerful political and military order in Temeria.
After the transformation of the Order of the Flaming Rose, Jacques was respected by the nobility and peasants alike due to his charisma resulting from the fact that he became popular and on a massive scale persecuted Inhumans who were considered enemies in Temeria society. However, the greatest enemy for the entire order turned out to be the Scoia'tael fighters against whom they fought brutally and intervened. Jacob's absolute lack of tolerance towards non-humans causes huge tensions and an increase in racist attitudes towards the inhabitants of Vizima. Some of the residents who referred to the rumors that one of the most famous knights of the Order of the Flaming Rose, a certain Siegfried of Denesle, was allegedly the bastard son of Jacques de Aldersberg himself.
Despite his cruel and immoral actions, Jacques enjoyed sympathy and admiration for the king of Temeria, Foltest, and the royal nobility, which allowed his order to grow even more in position. However, the growing position of the Order of the Burning Rose of Jacques de Aldersberg is a serious threat because it is a new political competition.
According to Triss Merigold, Jacques de Aldersberg was a child of the Source and had powerful magical abilities, but Jacob chose not to attend any magical school. Although Jacques did not attend any school, he most likely learned his magical skills with the help of various religious sects.
Although Jacques is fondly remembered by other inhabitants of Vizima, no one knew who the Grand Master Jacques de Aldersberg really was, who, secretly from everyone, was planning to overthrow King Foltest and take over power in Temeria and even the entire world after causing an uprising in Vizima organized by his Scoia'tael enemies. This uprising is to dethrone King Foltest, who will give his power to the Order of the Flaming Rose so that they can effectively suppress the Scoia'tael.
In order to successfully trigger an attack in Vizima, Jacques decided to recruit Azar Javed, the leader of the criminal organization Salamandra, into his plot. Jacques, who was obsessed with his worldview, showing him Vizima destroyed by glaciers and snow storms, was further motivated by the creation of mutants perfectly capable of not only surviving in cold conditions, but also incapable of experiencing feelings, completely obedient to his will. Wanting to find a way to create this type of mutants, Jacques tasked Javed with obtaining secret ingredients to create mutants in Kear Morhen. Salamandra herself manages to get these ingredients, causing a fight with the surviving witchers from the wolf school. Moreover, the Order of the Flaming Rose is allegedly fighting with the Salamandra organization itself to get rid of suspicions of cooperation.
