Ignus
Ignus wishes to BURN!
~ Ignus

Ignus is a pyromaniac sorcerer and a playable character in Planescape: Torment. While his alignment is chaotic neutral by default, many players consider him evil because of his obvious insanity and insatiable desire

to incinerate various things.

Backstory

Ignus was once the apprentice of an incarnation of the Nameless One, who was described as a sorcerer of great power. The sorcerer believed in learning from suffering, and subjected Ignus to many torments in order to get him to learn how to become a pyromancer. When he did, he attempted to burn down the Hive, starting with the Alley of Dangerous Angles. As a result, all the spellcasters in Sigil united against him to put a stop to his killing spree, and converted him into a portal to the Elemental Plane of Fire. Unbeknownst to the spellcasters, Ignus remained alive, and reveled in his endlessly burning flames. He then became a popular figure at the Smoldering Corpse Bar, and is the reason behind the bar's name. He remained there until the Nameless One freed him.

During the Story

The Nameless One finds a Decanter of Endless Water in the catacombs beneath Sigil and uses it to free Ignus from his apparent prison. His lover, Drusilla, who stands nearby, embraces him and is obviously killed. Ignus can teach The Nameless One to advance as a mage, but bears a grudge against him for torturing him, and makes him suffer the same punishment. Every time Ignus teaches him something new, he burns a vital organ or a part of his body (such as an eye or intestine) which results in permanent damage to himself.

At the end of the game, if the Nameless One maintained a good or lawful alignment through most of the game, The Transcendent One finds Ignus in the Fortress of Regrets and orders him to kill his master, a thought at which he cackles with delight. When he is killed, he apologizes for betraying his master's teachings.

Personality

Ignus is quite obviously psychotic, and takes delight in burning anything, and firmly believes that anything can burn. He is also very powerful, and he apparently has the power to permanently destroy his master, which is something that only a select few beings can accomplish.
