Our Prophets are false! Open your eyes, my brothers! They would use the faith of our forefathers to bring ruin to us all!
~ Sesa Refumee, the leader of the Heretics
Heretics were a faction of Elites and Grunts that broke away from the Covenant Empire after the Battle of Installation 04. They had been considered to be enough of a threat to the Covenant religion that the Prophet of Truth sent Thel 'Vadam and a group of Special Operations Elites to eliminate the Heretics. The faction was led by Sesa Refumee who was assassinated by Vadam for his leadership of the Heretics. They appear as enemies in Halo 2 and Halo Reach firefight. They believe the Great Journey is a false belief created by the Prophets and they had 343 Guilty Spark on their side until the Heretic Leader was finally executed. They made the Gas Mine on Threshold their main base. The Heretics appear to hold an alliance with 343 Guilty Spark and the Sentinels. They still worshipped the Forerunners though, but discovered Halo's true purpose.

Heretic Grunts

Heretic Grunts with Needlers

Heretic Grunts mainly wield Needlers, and never wield Plasma Pistols unlike their Covenant counterparts. They can also man Plasma Turrets and wield Fuel Rod Guns as heavy weaponry. Unlike Covenant Grunts, Heretic Grunts are well more respected by the Heretics. They are far more dangerous then Covenant Grunts as they do not panic and ran away when their Heretic Elite commander is killed, but they do not suicidal attack enemy forces.

Heretic Elites

Heretic Elite Major

Heretic Elites have three ranks: Minor, Major and Heretic Leader (although Heretic Leader is only to Sesa Refumee). They usually wield Sentinel Beams and Covenant Carbines, and occassionally wield Energy Swords. Unlike Sesa, Heretic Leaders do not wield Plasma Rifles like their Covenant counterparts who often wield Plasma Rifles. Brown Elites are Minors while Golden ones are golden, and Heretic Leaders are red. They appear to wear less armor than Covenant Elites, but are not easier to kill.

Halo: Reach Firefight

On Halo Reach, Heretics appear as a class of enemies in Firefight. Heretics wield UNSC Weaponry. Lower Elites wield weapons like Assault Rifles, Magnums, Snipers and DMRs, while higher Elites like Officers and Ultras wield better weaponry such as Spartan Lasers and Rocket Launchers. They appear to be extremly dangerous foes and Sniper Elites are extremly accurate in marksmenship.
