Still, you know what they say about evolution? Even amoebas can do it!
~ Henry Adams, before killing either King or Charisma.
Batman: You killed them, didn't you Henry?
Henry Adams: (laugh) Oh Bats. You're so easy. Desperate to see the good in people. Especially when they're bad.
~ Henry revealing to Batman that he wasn't immune to the Joker Infection.
Now that's... unexpected. You're going to be... spectacular.
~ Henry realizing that Batman is the last joker, also, his final words before committing suicide with his own gun.

Henry Adams is the principal at McCallum University and one of the five people in Gotham still infected with Joker's blood. He is a supporting antagonist in the 2015 video game Batman: Arkham Knight.

He was voiced by Garrick Hagon, who also played Superintendent Evil in The Amazing World Of Gumball.

Biography[]

Prior to the game[]

Before being infected, Henry Adams was the principal of McCallum University, but suffered from a bad hip. Needing hip replacement surgery, he needed a blood transfusion to do so. After being infected with Joker's blood at a routine treatment at Gotham General he alongside Johnny Charisma, Christina Bell, and Albert King did not receive the cure from Batman due to hospital errors. While all of the others displayed symptoms of slowly turning into a new Joker, Henry, who was infected longest, showed no signs whatsoever.

He was approached by Batman who saw Henry's supposed immunity to the Joker blood as the key to developing a cure. Henry cooperated and was brought to Batman's laboratory at Panessa movie studios where Robin tried to find the cure in Henrys blood. Though initially cooperative, Henrys patience wore thin as Robin was not able to find a cure. When Commissioner Gordon followed Batman's invite and visited the studios Henry begged him to release him because he wanted to return to his family.

Although it seemed that Henry was immune, he had succumbed to Joker's blood as the others. However, Henry feigned immunity to gain Batman's trust. Before following Batman's invitation, he met with Harley Quinn and revealed himself as the new Joker. At some point at the laboratory, he called Harley and told her how to invade the movie studios. He also told her to hit him, because that would gain him Batman's trust.

In the game[]

While Batman searches for the Cloudburst, he is called by Henry who tells him that something is happening at the movie studios, he is then struck at the head by Harley Quinn who releases all the other new Jokers from their cells. When Batman heads to the studio he finds Quinn's thugs beating Adams. After teaming up with Robin Batman saves Henry and orders him to keep the room on lockdown while he and Robin search for the remaining Jokers.

After returning two of them, to the main room, Batman is called by a desperate Henry who claims that Harley is trying to get in the room. After fighting and beating Quinn, Batman return to the main chamber with Harley and the last Joker only to find out that Henry, who had only feigned immunity to Jokers blood, killed all the other Jokers. He tells Batman that he had overwritten the security at the studios, allowing Quinn to enter.

Much to Harleys distress, he also shoots the last Joker, claiming that in nature the strongest always wins and that he is purifying the gene pool to have the strongest Joker possible emerge as the victor. He prepares to shoot Batman but then sees in his eyes that Batman also is joker-infected. Realizing that Batman would make a far better and stronger Joker than himself, Henry, after claiming that Batman is "going to be spectacular", once again purifies the gene pool by shooting himself in the head.

Trivia[]

  • A close look at Henry Adams' face showed that he looked like an elderly version of the Joker, which foreshadowed that he wasn't actually immune to Joker's blood.
    • That elderly look could also be a reference to the Elseworld story Kingdom Come, where an elderly Joker mildly resembled Henry Adams.
  • It is stated in his bio that he is a professor of biology, hence his plans to purify the gene pool.
  • Throughout Gotham, there are posters of Henry, stating that he has been missing for some time.
  • It was up to the player if Henry kills either Albert King or Johnny Charisma onscreen. The one of them who is fought last will be the one Henry shoots before Harley, Robin and Batman. Christina Bell and the other Joker will be found dead in their cells.
  • When first meeting Batman, he told Batman that he should kill the other Jokers because they could not be saved.
  • Henry Adams' codeword for causing the breakout after reprogramming the Bat Computer at the movie studios: "Honey, I'm home!" was the same codeword Joker himself used to instigate the Arkham Asylum jailbreak/riot in Batman: Arkham Asylum.
  • The aspect of Joker's personality that Henry took on the most was Joker's intelligence and deceitfulness, as shown when he was able to trick both Batman and Robin into believing that he wasn't infected. Henry may also have symbolized Batman's futile, far-flung hope that the Joker had an ounce of good left in him that could have lead to redemption.
