We have great plans for the forest, Tigerstar and I, and you could have been part of them. But we don't need you, because you are weak and care more for kin than power. I don't.
~ Hawkfrost betraying Brambleclaw in Sunset.
You're the traitor. And this time I'll kill you.
~ Hawkfrost to Ivypool before getting killed by Brambleclaw - his last words.

Hawkfrost is a major antagonist in Erin Hunter's Warriors book series.

He was a Dark Forest resident, formerly RiverClan Warrior. He is the son of Tigerstar and Sasha, brother of Mothwing and Tadpole and half-brother of Bramblestar and Tawnypelt.

Born to a former kittypet named Sasha, Hawk and his sister Moth were given up to RiverClan by their mother after their brother Tadpole's death. They later became apprentices and, in Hawkpaw's case, warriors while his sister became a medicine cat, also receiving their new names: Hawkfrost and Mothwing. Hawkfrost then began becoming fascinated with his late father, eventually developing similar power-hungry ambitions. Upon arriving at the lake territories he joined Mudclaw's rebellion, secretly manipulating the former WindClan deputy, while at the same time growing close to his half-brother, Brambleclaw. Hawkfrost began to train with the spirit of his father in the Dark Forest, planning on becoming new leader of RiverClan and goading Brambleclaw into usurping the leadership of ThunderClan, by killing their leader. He orchestrated Firestar's attempt of murder, which backfired when Brambleclaw betrayed his half-brother and killed him, causing him to join their father in the Dark Forest.

As a spirit, he assisted in his father's schemes, notably helping him in training and manipulating Lionblaze and Breezepelt, the former of which realised their true intentions and cut ties with them. Hawkfrost also proved himself to be Tigerstar's most trusted cat and helped in training living cats in preparations for the Great Battle. During the battle, Hawkfrost joined Thistleclaw's patrol in attacking WindClan's camp, where he learned of Ivypool's treachery and attempted to kill her for her betrayal, but got stopped by Hollyleaf, whom he killed instead. Afterwards he was confronted by Brambleclaw, who killed him a second time, making him fade away forever.

Appearance[]

Hawkfrost is a huge, broad-shouldered, muscular, dark brown tabby tomcat with ice-blue eyes and a snowy white underbelly.

Personality[]

Hawkfrost is fearless. He proved that when he drove a badger out of RiverClan territory... He knows that power comes only to those who want it most.
~ Tigerstar about Hawkfrost.

For starters, Hawkfrost is much like his father Tigerstar: ruthless, cold and power-hungry; an example of what his half-brother Brambleclaw would’ve become if he had listened to his father and never had any support.

From a young age, Hawkpaw possessed an overwhelming desire to belong and become leader of RiverClan, as he is often perceived as an outsider by some cats due to his half-Clan/rogue heritage. His brother’s traumatic death and mother’s abandonment fuel into this. He is very protective and caring of his sister Mothwing, even if he has to manipulate her into becoming a medicine cat and fake omens in his favour.

Hawkfrost was always interested in his father. As his mother Sasha had told him in kithood that their father was a great cat, he grew up to admire Tigerstar. After Tigerstar offers him a way to earn power, Hawkfrost finds himself immersed in his father's evil plans, and obeys his orders usually without question. Unlike Mothwing, who grew out of it and realised the truth, Hawkfrost genuinely continued to admire and respect their father, even after learning of his power-hungry, bloodthirsty ways. However, he also believes that he is better than his father, saying that he’ll always be loyal to his Clan when taking power, rather than betraying it. He is extremely ambitious and power-hungry, wanting power and leadership at all costs. He is also extremely sly and persuasive, as he is very good at manipulating others (such as Mudclaw and Ivypool) to do his bidding and enjoys it.

Despite his usual calm and cold demeanour, he (hypocritically) hates betrayal. When Brambleclaw refuses to let Firestar die and try to save him, Hawkfrost rages and attacks his half-brother, which leads to his own death. Later on, when he tries to attack Ivypool for betraying his cause, only to get killed by his brother again, fading away forever.

Biography[]

Tigerstar and Sasha[]

He is first seen as kit named Hawk, shortly after his birth. When his mother Sasha goes hunting, he and his siblings Moth and Tadpole climb into an abandoned Twoleg nest. The house starts to fill with water and Tadpole is able to open the window annd help his litter mates up but and drowns in the flood. Hawk then keeps yelling for his dead brother and when he finds out that Tadpole died in the flood, he lets out a yowl of grief. This event would traumatise both Hawk and Moth for life.

Moth, Hawk, and Sasha go to a barn which the rogue Pine suggests. But they get attacked and chased out by cats living there, Hawk's ear getting cut in the process. Quickly, they leave for RiverClan, and Sasha leaves her kits there, but decides Clan life is not for her.

A Shadow in RiverClan[]

Hawk is introduced in the comic when Feathertail (the protagonist) and the rest of Leopardstar’s patrol spot him and his family on the stepping stones and Sasha pleading for Leopardstar to let her and her kits join RiverClan. The RiverClan leader allows them in, and the former rogue kits play with the RiverClan kits. Just then, Hawk falls into the river and nearly drowns, only to be saved by Feathertail. Hawk and Moth are later taught how to swim by Feathertail as precaution.

When the kits are about six moons old, they get made apprentices — Hawkpaw (mentored by Leopardstar) and Mothpaw (mentored by Mistyfoot). Hawkpaw quickly picks up the fighting skills taught to him by his mentor, as noted by Feathertail, who has fears of what Hawkpaw could become, being Tigerstar’s son and having a very similar appearance and aggression to his father (Sasha had confessed to Feathertail about Tigerstar being the kits’ father beforehand and later left RiverClan for her their safety). Feathertail also starts to ignore Hawkpaw, much to the apprentice’s dismay.

The apprentices continue their training and winter comes, leaving the Clan to vulnerability. One day, a starving fox attacks RiverClan’s camp. The RiverClan warriors, including Hawkpaw, drive it out. But Leopardstar says that since the fox now knows where the camp is, it will come back and even bring more foxes. She asks if anyone would want to volunteer to hunt the fox down alongside her, and Feathertail, her brother Stormfur and Hawkpaw join. Hawkpaw soon discovers the fox's den empty, and says that it’s safe. But then the patrol get cornered by the creature. Leopardstar orders Hawkpaw to stay back while she and her warriors attack the fox. However, Hawkpaw tries to attack it, and Leopardstar is severely bitten trying to save her apprentice. She begs for her Clanmates to leave her behind, but Feathertail, realizing her Clan leader is willing to sacrifice her life, manages to kill the fox with Stormfur and Hawkpaw.

After the incident and newleaf comes, Hawkpaw and Mothpaw continue hunting and training, nearly at warriorhood. Feathertail soon realises that she shouldn’t judge the apprentices for who their father was, and is grateful for them being her friends.

The New Prophecy[]

Hawkfrost is a new warrior of RiverClan and is popular among his Clanmates, though some cats from other Clans distrust them for their mother being a rogue. When Mistyfoot is captured by Twolegs, Hawkfrost is promoted to deputy as her replacement until Mistyfoot returns. When his father being Tigerstar is revealed to the rest of the Clans by his own mother Sasha, Hawkfrost insists he is a loyal warrior dedicated to the code and insists that he and Mothwing should stay when Sasha suggests for them to come with her, and Brambleclaw finds kinship in his newly revealed half-brother.

When the Clans arrive in the lake territories, Hawkfrost suggests RiverClan should live on the island and openly, but Mistyfoot disagrees as kits and elders can’t swim back and forth from the island. He later convinces Mudclaw to overthrow Onewhisker after the latter is promoted to depicts after Tallstar dies, but later changes his mind to save Brambleclaw. The brothers grow closer and walk in the same dreams under the guidance of their father, Tigerstar, who wishes for them to be leaders of their Clans someday. When Stormfur and Brook, the former of which could become deputy in the future, return to RiverClan, Hawkfrost forces Mothwing to fake a dream foretelling the two outsiders to leave. During an argument, Hawkfrost reveals he faked a sign to Mudfur that helped his sister become the medicine cat apprentice.

After Brambleclaw becomes the deputy of ThunderClan, Hawkfrost is pleased, and Tigerstar's plans for revenge begin to fall into place. Hawkfrost, with the help of the ThunderClan warrior, Ashfur, manages to lure Firestar into a fox trap. He instructs Brambleclaw to kill Firestar and become the leader of ThunderClan, but Brambleclaw decides his loyalties belong to ThunderClan. Brambleclaw frees Firestar and kills Hawkfrost with the remains of the fox trap that Firestar was stuck in. Hawkfrost bleeds out into the lake and fulfills the prophecy "blood will spill blood". He is the sent to the Dark Forest for his treachery and attempted takeover.

Power of Three[]

The rest of the Clans are unaware of how Hawkfrost died, and his Clanmates mourn his death. Now residing in the Dark Forest with his father, he and Tigerstar take interest in Brambleclaw's ‘sons’ (actually Leafpool and Crowfeather’s), Jaypaw and Lionpaw. The two train Lionpaw, teaching him some battle moves, and Hawkfrost confronts him for teaching Heatherpaw, an apprentice of WindClan. When Lionpaw tells them about the Kin of your Kin prophecy, the two Dark Forest toms instantly mock him for believing in it. Lionblaze eventually cuts off ties with the two, leaving them hungry for revenge.

Omen of the Stars[]

He trains an apprentice called Ivypaw to destroy the Clans, using her sense of jealousy and insecurity towards her sister Dovewing for bait. She turns into a spy and fights for the Clans in the Great Battle. When he kills Hollyleaf, he is taken back to camp by Brambleclaw. Ivypaw, by then Ivypool, tries to kill Hawkfrost but when he overpowers her, Brambleclaw steps in and kills him himself. Hawkfrost then fades away forever.

Quotes[]

Sasha: Now listen...this is very important. Where we're going, you might hear stories about him one day. But remember that I loved him. And know he would be very proud of you.
Hawk: What stories? Can we—are we going to see Tigerstar now?
Sasha: No...no. Tigerstar is dead. And you have to promise me—promise me!—that you'll never mention his name to any other cat.
Hawk: But, Mama, why—
Sasha: I mean it. This is our secret. Do you promise?
Hawk: O-Okay, Mama.
Moth: We promise.
~ Sasha telling her kits about their father.
I'll make you proud, Mama. You'll see.
~ Hawkpaw to Sasha as she leaves.
Hawkfrost: I was talking to Sasha at the edge of our territory.
Mothwing: Oh, good. Was she okay?
Hawkfrost: Yeah...But Firestar and a couple other ThunderClan cats saw us. They were coming onto ThunderClan territory to talk to Leopardstar. Firestar asked if we were Tigerstar's kits, and Sasha said yes.
Mothwing: What? Why would she admit it?
Hawkfrost: The way he said it...he already knew. I look like Tigerstar, I guess. At least, I look like Brambleclaw. And every cat knows he's Tigerstar's son, but he was born in the Clans, so no cat worries about
him.
Mothwing: They would have found out eventually, I suppose. Do we have to leave?
Hawkfrost: Maybe not. I don't think Firestar will tell any cat or let the cats he was with tell anyone. I think he's known for a long time.
Mothwing: But if they do...
Hawkfrost: I'm RiverClan's strongest warrior. If anyone tries to turn against us, they'll be sorry.
~ Hawkfrost and Mothwing.
Hawkfrost: Have you got bees in your brain? This could be our chance to make RiverClan great. If the other Clans are weak, we could rule over the whole forest.
Mothwing: What? You're the one with bees in your brain. Who do you think you are—Tigerstar?
Hawkfrost: There are worse cats to imitate.
~ Hawkfrost and Mothwing.
I shall learn from his mistakes. Our mother told us enough about him, after all. He broke the warrior code, and he deserved to fail. I shall know better.
~ Hawkfrost to Mothwing about Tigerstar.
Hawkfrost: If you can't survive in the forest anymore, then I agree that you should leave. After all, what sort of leader would let his Clan starve?
Brambleclaw: You just want us to leave so you can steal our territory!
Hawkfrost: If you aren't here, then you won't need it anymore.
Brambleclaw: You might feel differently if you were truly Clanborn.
Firestar: Show some respect, Brambleclaw! Hawkfrost is not responsible for his birth.
~ Hawkfrost and Brambleclaw bickering while the leaders wait for a sign.
Brambleclaw: But Tigerstar was my father too! Does this mean I have kin in two other Clans?
Hawkfrost: I'm surprised you hadn't guessed.
Brambleclaw: I thought Tawnypelt and I were the only ones...
Hawkfrost: At least you had a chance to know our father. I envy you that.
Brambleclaw: I learned more from Firestar than I ever did from Tigerstar.
Hawkfrost: But still, Tigerstar knew you. He never even set eyes on me.
~ Brambleclaw and Hawkfrost about their father.
You have no reason to doubt yourself. Our father was a great warrior. Our mother is proud and strong. They shared only one flaw: that their only loyalty was—and still is, in Sasha's case—to themselves above all other cats. We're not like that. We understand what it means to be loyal to our Clan. We have the courage to live by the warrior code. And because of that we'll be the most powerful cats in RiverClan one day, and our Clanmates will have to respect us then.
~ Hawkfrost displaying his ambition to Mothwing and Leafpaw.
Don't you agree that I'd be a good deputy? Don't you want to help me? After all we've done for RiverClan, we deserve to lead it. No cat respects the warrior code and what being part of a Clan means more than we do.
~ Hawkfrost to Mothwing.
Mistyfoot: I already decide the island isn't suitable for a camp—and I don't appreciate you trying to get Leopardstar to change that decision.
Hawkfrost: Look, all I was trying to do—
Mistyfoot: I don't want to hear it. You need to remember who RiverClan's deputy is, Hawkfrost. Because it's
not you.
~ Mistyfoot and Hawkfrost arguing.
Don't worry; I'm not one of the cats who thinks cats from different Clans shouldn't have anything to do with one another. I saw what happened with Tawnypelt. It's tough to have loyalties divided. We all have friends in other Clans now, and yet we have to act as if being rivals is the only thing that matters.
~ Hawkfrost to Brambleclaw.
Hawkfrost: Speaking of deputies, when's Firestar going to make you his?
Brambleclaw: There are more experienced warriors—
Hawkfrost: Older warriors, but more experienced? I think not. How many of them could have made your journey to the sun-drown-place, and then led us here? You're strong and skillful and you uphold the warrior code. Why shouldn't you be deputy?
Brambleclaw: Firestar has good reasons for not appointing a new deputy.
Hawkfrost: Are you talking about Graystripe? Every cat
knows Graystripe is dead. He'd go down fighting rather than let Twolegs turn him into a kittypet. There's only one reason Firestar won't appoint you deputy, and you know it as well as I do. It’s because of who your father was. Because of who our father was.
Brambleclaw: Do you have the same problem in RiverClan?
Hawkfrost: No. Tigerstar was never such an enemy to RiverClan. Any trouble I have comes from not being Clanborn. It used to bother me, but now I just look at Firestar. If a kittypet can become Clan leader, so can I.
~ Hawkfrost and Brambleclaw at a Gathering.
Mudclaw: You're not telling me everything, Hawkfrost. What are you really planning?
Hawkfrost: I'll just say this—when you're naming your future deputy in WindClan? I hope you'll remember who your friends are.
~ Mudclaw asking Hawkfrost about his true intentions with the coup in WindClan.
I'm sorry to have to say it...but there's only one choice I can see. Onewhisker has to die. If he dies before StarClan makes him a true leader, Ashfoot won't have any right to succeed him. If she survives, that is. Mudclaw—WindClan's true deputy—will become leader, and Firestar will lose his power over WindClan. It's a hard choice, but we have to make it. For the good of all the Clans.
~ Hawkfrost urging his followers to fight.
I joined with Mudclaw because I believe he is the rightful leader of WindClan. But you’re my brother, Brambleclaw. How could I let him kill you?
~ Hawkfrost to Brambleclaw.
Maybe she wouldn't choose him now, but in a few moons? When the Clan's memory of his desertion isn't so fresh? Tigerstar kept both Mistyfoot and Stormfur as prisoners because they were half-Clan cats. He planned to kill them! Don't you think when Mistyfoot becomes leader, she would prefer Stormfur as her deputy instead of Tigerstar's son?
~ Hawkfrost manipulating Mothwing into helping him incriminate Stormfur.
I've always been loyal to RiverClan, and I deserve to be deputy! You know that, and StarClan know that, so why not make sure the whole Clan knows it too?
~ Hawkfrost screeching at Mothwing.
Hawkfrost: This is our chance to take revenge on Firestar for our father's death. He could've tried to stop Scourge, but he just stood there and watched Tigerstar die, over and over and over.
Brambleclaw: No, I won't do it. Keep still, Firestar, I'll get you out of this in a heartbeat.
Hawkfrost: Coward! Keep away and I'll kill him myself if I have to.
~ Hawkfrost and Brambleclaw.
Why don't you let us teach you some fighting moves? Once you see how easy they are for you, you'll realize that you were born to lead your Clanmates in battle, not spend all your time in the camp with herbs and poultices.
~ Hawkfrost trying to lure Jaypaw.
You beat a bunch of half-starved, untrained rogues. Wow. That's a real sign of a great warrior!
~ Hawkfrost taunting Lionpaw.
Hawkfrost: Did you tell [Dovepaw] about me?
Ivypaw: I was going to. But I didn't get a chance. Now I don't want to tell her. Why should I? She has her secrets, so I'll have mine.
Hawkfrost: Probably a good idea. It sounds like...Dovepaw—is that her name? It sounds like Dovepaw would get jealous and want to learn all your moves. She's your littermate, not your echo, right?
Ivypaw: Right! Why should I give her the chance to copy me?
Hawkfrost: No more echoes. Let's try something new.
~ Hawkfrost training Ivypaw.
Well fought. You've earned your place among the warriors. If you want to know anything, just ask me. I can see how much this means to you.
~ Hawkfrost congratulating Ivypool on becoming a Dark Forest warrior.
Be careful? There's a war coming and it won't be won with sheathed claws. I thought you were helping to train our recruits to fight like real warriors, not soft Clan cats.
~ Hawkfrost confronting Ivypool when she's training the Dark Forest recruits.
Then we shall kill you first before we destroyed your wretched Clans!
~ Hawkfrost upon finding out about Ivypool's secret agenda and being betrayed by most of the trainees.
Do you really think you'd live after betraying me?
~ Hawkfrost attacking Ivypool, moments before Hollyleaf intervenes.
