Villain Overview

Eren! You'll understand the truth someday, if you visit the basement! It will be a harsh, painful journey... but you must reach it! If you want to save Mikasa, Armin, and everyone else... you must learn to control this ability!
~ Grisha to his son Eren before turning him into a Titan.
I came here knowing that you would be ignorant on that subject. It's a consequence of the way you've been shackled by the vow renouncing war. You can't use the Founder's full power either. The future is already long since decided. I am going to eat the Founding Titan, and bring an end to the royal bloodline right now!
~ Grisha to Frieda Reiss, moments before preparing himself to massacre the Reiss family.

Grisha Yeager is a major character of the Attack on Titan series. He was the father of Zeke and Eren Yeager. Born as an oppressed Eldian living in Marley, he joined a rebel organization known as the Eldian Restorationists, and subsequently used his son, Zeke as a spy to infiltrate the Marleyen Military, along with his wife, Dina Fritz.

After this failed, he would inherit the Attack Titan from the leader of the Restorationists, Eren Kruger, and use it to travel to the Walls in Paradis Island, where he would kill the Royal Family, excluding Rod Reiss. In his passing moments, he passed on his Attack Titan to his son, Eren.

Appearance[]

Grisha is a middle-aged man with a rather tall and slender build. He has long brown hair open in the middle of the forehead and falling straight along his neck, as well as greenish eyes. He wears round little glasses and has slight facial hair. In his youth as an Eldian Restorationist, he shaved his face and didn’t wear his glasses.

When he worked as a doctor in Paradis, he was seen wearing a light brown coat with a white shirt and tie. He also wore a hat at times.

As a young adult in Marley, Grisha was often dressed in a brown jacket over a white shirt, sometimes adding a light brown vest, along with dark gray pants.

As a child, he had a similar outfit but his jacket was pale green and he wore a gray beret. He also wore the yellow armband indicating his Eldian lineage.

As the Attack Titan, Grisha had a similar face but with blue eyes, long pointed ears and grayer, thicker hair, including facial hair. His torso was much bulkier than the rest of his body (and his human form) and he displayed grayish hair on his chest. Overall, he had a very muscular build.

Personality[]

Grisha first appears as a calm, thoughtful individual who earnestly carries his duty as a doctor. He is shown to be caring with his children and generous enough to adopt Mikasa Ackerman after her parents were murdered by human traffickers, or to take twice a beating to avoid the same treatment for his sister Faye. However, he is also revealed to be very passionate about his ideals, especially his will to revive the Eldian Empire, something that he is ready to do anything for.

Ever since his childhood, Grisha has been reckless, removing his armband before leaving the Liberio Internment Zone with his little sister in order to watch a blimp. After her death, he lets his anger grow towards Marley and his parents’ submission to them. As a young adult, Grisha joined the Eldian Restorationists without hesitation, vowing to destroy Marley, and quickly became one of their major speakers, advocating their ideals with passion.

His passionate nature often leads him to burst into fits of anger. He snaps at his father when he continues to buy into Marley’s propaganda, or at his wife Dina after he witnesses their son Zeke fail his training as a warrior candidate. The weight of his ideals and his hardworking nature are such that he often neglects Zeke’s well-being, refusing to spend time with him under the pretext of being too busy and continuously blaming him for his failures and pressuring him into becoming a warrior to save Eldia. Grisha is also quite hypocritical, as he inflicts upon Zeke the same kind of propaganda that his father used to spill onto him, the difference being that Grisha taught Zeke about the greatness of the Eldian Empire.

After Zeke denounces his parents to Marley Public Security, Grisha comes to regret the way he treated his son, tearfully proclaiming his love for him when he sees him in his memories of the future. He adopts a much more loving behavior with Eren and Mikasa, even hesitating to kill the royal family to take the Founding Titan due to his fear of losing his son. Overall, after Zeke’s treason, he is much less eager to actually fulfill his revenge on Marley. When Eren Kruger entrusts him with his mission, he first rejects it, feeling completely dejected after his wife and comrades’ transformation into Pure Titans. He needs Kruger to remind him of his responsibility in his sister’s death to actually take action. In a similar fashion, as he is about to transform into the Attack Titan and kill the royal family, mostly children, he breaks down and claims that as a doctor, he cannot kill anyone, especially not kids. Yet, when Eren exhorts him from his memories of the future, he reluctantly agrees and comes back from it in a state of horror.

Biography[]

Born in Marley, in an internment zone for Eldians within the city of Liberio, Grisha is the son of a doctor and clinic owner and another Eldian woman as their firstborn child, and subsequently had a younger sister named Faye, who was murdered at the age of eight by an officer of the Public Security Authorities during 817.

For roughly eight years (824-832), Grisha was one of the leaders of a reactionary terroristic rebel organization known as the Eldian Restorationists, whose overarching leader was an anonymous Marleyan official known as "the Owl". The discontented group sought to "correct the world" as the Eldian Empire had done before, to destroy Marley once more, and revive the nation of Eldia. In 825 Grisha married fellow Restorationist Dina Fritz, the last remaining member of the royal family on the mainland, and the two had a son named Zeke born to them later on the same year.

Grisha puts pressure on Zeke

Grisha pressures Zeke with his beliefs

Around 830 or 831, when Zeke was either five or six, Grisha and his fellow Restorationists used Zeke as a mole and attempted to have him infiltrate the Marleyan military as a child soldier of the Warrior Unit, with the Owl promising to give him support and cover him. Grisha and his comrades were planning to have him go to fight in Marley's wars until the day of the Paradis Island Operation, during which he would have to steal the Founding Titan from both Marley and the Walls of Paradis for the sake of the Subjects of Ymir living in the internment zones, especially those in Marley and Liberio. Unaware of the conditions to use the Founder's power, the Restorationists sought to have Zeke use it to control all the other Titans of Marley and start a war. However, Zeke was not performing well during his early training years, and the Owl sent word to Grisha and Grice that Zeke's grades and scores in the military academy were too low for himself being able to influence the final decision of the Warrior program's brass in charge of choosing new inheritors. Although it is common historical knowledge known by civilians that inheritors of any of the Nine Titans perish after thirteen years of their power's tenure, Grisha put his political agenda above his son's future and right to decide for himself what to do with his life. He also tried to teach to Zeke his and fellow Restorationists's own biased version of Eldia's history.

Following the exposure, arrest, and dissolution of the Restorationists in 832, he was sent by the Owl - revealed to be Eren Kruger of Marley Public Security - on a mission to steal the Founding Titan from the royal family of the Walls of Paradis Island, Grisha became the inheritor of the Attack Titan, receiving it from Eren Kruger, the true identity of the Owl, in order to use it to take the Founder from the King of the Walls by force.

Always in 832, Grisha infiltrated the Walls by feigning amnesia and pretending to be a mysterious citizen from the Walls, after being taken in by the second-in-command of the Survey Corps, Keith Shadis. He settled in Shiganshina District and used his education in medicine received in Marley to work in the city as a doctor, like he did in Liberio. At some point between the years 832 and 835, he used his modern medical knowledge from Marley to create antibodies against an epidemic in Shiganshina, saving many lives. Always at some point between those years, he re-married to Carla, a tavern keeper from Shiganshina, and the two subsequently had a son, Eren, during 835.

Throughout his married life, Grisha provided medical services for the nobility in the Interior, in order to gain information needed to locate the true royal family of the Walls, and around 837 identified the Reiss family and their secret hidehout beneath their chapel. In 844, Grisha adopted Mikasa Ackerman into the Yeager family, following the murder of the girl's parents at the hands of bandit human traffickers.

While spending thirteen years living within the Walls, Grisha documented detailed information about the real world outside the Walls and its history in three books, especially background about Eldia, Marley, the situation between humanity and the people segregated in internment zones, the Titans and their origins, and some other background facts such as the existence of the oceans, of modern technology existing outside the Walls, such as better ships and airships, and similar facts, although he was not able to bring any maps of the world with himself before being banished. One of the three books documented by Grisha is his own personal diary, in which he narrates his life in Marley and his background as a child and Restorationist. He hid the books in his house's basement, in order to prevent the authorities of the Walls - especially the Military Police's First Interior Squad serving the royal family - from finding them.

During 845, Grisha massacred the Reiss royal family the night of the same day of Marley's first invasion and breach of the Walls, killing the matriarch and the five children, but leaving the patriarch alive. He stole and inherited the Founding Titan after devouring Frieda Reiss. A day after the tragedies, at eve, he reunited with his son Eren and Commander Keith Shadis at Trost District, learning from Eren that Carla was killed and eaten by a Titan. That night, Grisha forced Eren to be injected with a serum, turning him into a Pure Titan, and allowing him to eat him alive to inherit both the Attack and the Founding Titans. Grisha did it, despite regretfully knowing that his son would use such powers to awake the Colossal Titans that made the three Walls and use them to commit a global-scale genocide and ecocide with the Rumbling, which was going to also exterminate Grisha's own parents and people in Liberio, despite the fact they were the ones that Grisha desired to free since childhood. Grisha wished for his son Zeke to stop Eren from do it, and save humanity.

In 854, Grisha's parents were arrested by the Marleyan government for Zeke's treason of the state and his involvement with the Raid on Liberio and the previous disappearances of 32 Marleyan survey ships at Paradis Island, which were the last straw of the Yeager family's criminal record, already aggravated by Grisha and Eren's actions. Grisha's parents were both murdered by the Wall Titans during the Rumbling, while unable to escape from their jail cell in Liberio. Very few days later, Grisha's soul met his son Zeke within the Paths, and was liberated from the Founder Ymir's control, making Grisha able to fight with the Marley-Survey Corps alliance to save humanity and the Eldians of Liberio from the Rumbling. Grisha and his allies succeeded in stopping the Rumbling during the Battle of Heaven and Earth at Fort Salta, which also resulted with the deaths of both Grisha's sons Zeke and Eren, the former who had still less than one year left to live, while the latter still had less than four years left.

Trivia[]

  • In the manga version, the airship that Grisha and Faye watch in Liberio is a blimp, while in the anime version it is a zeppelin, which is more advanced and more fit for military purposes.
